THE MESSAGE
The moment she heard that, she jumped up and ran out to him. Jesus had not yet entered the town but was still at the place where Martha had met him. When her sympathizing Jewish friends saw Mary run off, they followed her, thinking she was on her way to the tomb to weep there. Mary came to where Jesus was waiting and fell at his feet, saying, "Master, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died."
Simplified Cowboy Version
Mary got up at once and went outside.

Contextual Overview

17Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having already been four days in the tomb. 18And Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off, 19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother; 20Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus comes, met Him, and Mary kept sitting in the house. 21Martha, therefore, said to Jesus, "Lord, if You had been here, my brother had not died; 22but even now, I have known that whatever You may ask of God, God will give to You"; 23Jesus says to her, "Your brother will rise again." 24Martha says to Him, "I have known that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day"; 25Jesus said to her, "I AM the resurrection, and the life; he who is believing in Me, even if he may die, will live; 26and everyone who is living and believing in Me will not die—throughout the age;

Gill's Notes on the Bible

As soon as she heard that,.... That Christ was come, and inquired for her, and wanted to see her:

she arose quickly, and came unto him; having an equal affection for him as her sister Martha; and which she showed, by leaving her comforters at once, and by making the haste she did, to another and better comforter: both Martha and Mary, out of their great love to Christ, break through the rule for mourners mentioned in note,

:-, of not going out of the door of the house the first week of mourning.
