Contextual Overview

1The word that has been to Jeremiah from YHWH, saying, 2"Thus spoke YHWH, God of Israel, saying, Write for yourself all the words that I have spoken to you on a scroll. 3For behold, days are coming—a declaration of YHWH—and I have turned back [to] the captivity of My people Israel and Judah, said YHWH, and I have caused them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they possess it." 4And these [are] the words that YHWH has spoken concerning Israel and concerning Judah:5Surely thus said YHWH: "We have heard a voice of trembling, || Fear—and there is no peace. 6Now ask and see, is a male bringing forth? Why have I seen every man || [With] his hands on his loins, as a travailing woman, || And all faces have been turned to paleness? 7Woe! For that day [is] great, without any like it, || Indeed, it [is] the time of Jacob's tribulation, || Yet he is saved out of it. 8And it has come to pass in that day, || A declaration of YHWH of Hosts, || I break his yoke from off your neck, || And I draw away your bands, || And strangers lay no more service on him. 9And they have served their God YHWH, || And David their king whom I raise up to them.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And these are the words that the Lord spake concerning Israel,

and concerning Judah. Which follow in this chapter and the next; first concerning Israel, the ten tribes; and then concerning the two tribes of Judah and Benjamin, even concerning all Israel; whereas, if this prophecy only respects the return from the captivity in Babylon, there is very little in it which concerns the ten tribes, or but a very few of them. The words may be rendered, "unto Israel, and unto Judah"; as being the persons to whom they were directed, as well as were the subjects of them.
