Jesus Is Risen!

1 (C1)Now on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared.2 And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb,3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of (C1)the Lord Jesus.4 And it happened that while they were perplexed about this, behold, (C1)two men suddenly (C2)stood near them in dazzling clothing,5 and when the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living One among the dead?6 "He is not here, but He (C1)has (F1)risen. Remember how He spoke to you (C2)while He was still in Galilee,7 saying that (C1)the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again."8 And (C1)they remembered His words,9 and when they returned from the tomb, they reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.10 Now (C1)Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the rest of the women with them were there; they were telling these things to (C2)the apostles.11 But these words appeared (F1)to them as nonsense, and they (C1)were not believing them.12 But Peter stood up and (C1)ran to the tomb; and stooping to look in, he (*)saw the linen wrappings (F1)only. And he went away (C2)by himself, marveling at what had happened.

The Road to Emmaus

13 And behold, (C1)two of them were going that same day to a village named Emmaus, which was (F1)sixty stadia from Jerusalem.14 And they were conversing with each other about all these things which had happened.15 And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus Himself approached and was going with them.16 But (C1)their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him.17 And He said to them, "What are these words that you are discussing with one another as you are walking?" And they stood still, looking sad.18 And one of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, "Are You (F1)the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?"19 And He said to them, "What things?" And they said to Him, "The things about (C1)Jesus the Nazarene, who was a mighty (C2)prophet in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people,20 and how the chief priests and our (C1)rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him.21 "But we were hoping that it was He who was going to (C1)redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened.22 "But also some women among us astounded us. (C1)When they were at the tomb early in the morning,23 and not finding His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive.24 "Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also said, but Him they did not see."25 And He said to them, "O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all that (C1)the prophets have spoken!26 "(C1)Was it not necessary for the (F1)Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?"27 Then beginning (F1)with (C1)Moses and (F1)with all the (C2)prophets, He interpreted to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

28 And they approached the village where they were going, and (C1)He acted as though He were going farther.29 But they urged Him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, for it is toward evening, and the day (F1)is now nearly over." So He went in to stay with them.30 And it happened that when He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and (C1)blessed it, and after breaking it, He was giving it to them.31 Then their (C1)eyes were opened and they recognized Him. And He vanished from (F1)their sight.32 And they said to one another, "(F1)Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He (C1)was opening the Scriptures to us?"33 And they stood up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and (C1)found gathered together the eleven and (C2)those with them,34 who were saying, "(C1)The Lord has really risen and (C2)has appeared to Simon."35 And they were relating (F1)their experiences on the road and how (C1)He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples

36 Now while they were telling these things, (C1)He Himself stood in their midst and (*)said to them, "Peace to you."37 But being startled and frightened, they were thinking that they were seeing (C1)a spirit.38 And He said to them, "Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your (F1)hearts?39 "(C1)See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; (C2)touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have."40 And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet.41 And while they still (C1)were not believing because of their joy and were still marveling, He said to them, "(C2)Have you anything here to eat?"42 They gave Him a piece of a broiled fish,43 and He took it and (C1)ate it before them.

44 Now He said to them, "(C1)These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the (C2)Law of Moses and the Prophets and (C3)the Psalms must be fulfilled."45 Then He (C1)opened their (F1)minds to understand the Scriptures,46 and He said to them, "(C1)Thus it is written, that the (F1)Christ would suffer and (C2)rise again from the dead the third day,47 and that (C1)repentance (F1)for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed (F2)in His name to (C2)all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.48 "You are (C1)witnesses of these things.49 "And behold, (C1)I am sending the promise of My Father upon you, but (C2)you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."

The Ascension

50 And He led them out as far as (C1)Bethany, and lifting up His hands, He blessed them.51 And it happened that while He was blessing them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven.52 And they, after worshiping Him, returned to Jerusalem with great joy,53 and were continually in the temple blessing God.
