Isaiah 53
The Suffering Servant
1 (C1)Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of Yahweh been revealed?
2 For He grew up before Him like a (C1)tender (F1)shoot,
And like a root out of parched ground;
He has (C2)no stately form or majesty
That we should look upon Him,
Nor appearance that we should desire Him.
3 He was (C1)despised and forsaken of men,
A man of (F1)sorrows and (C2)acquainted with (F2)grief;
And like one from whom men hide their face
He was (C3)despised, and we did not (C4)esteem Him.
4 Surely our (F1)griefs He Himself (F2)(C1)bore,
And our (F3)sorrows He (F4)carried;
Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
(F5)Smitten of (C2)God, and afflicted.
5 But He was (F1)pierced through for (C1)our transgressions,
He was crushed for (C2)our iniquities;
The (C3)chastening for our peace fell upon Him,
And by (C4)His (F2)wounds we are healed.
6 All of us like sheep have gone astray,
Each of us has turned to his own way;
But Yahweh has caused the iniquity of us all
To (F1)fall on Him.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He did not (C1)open His mouth;
(C2)Like a lamb that is led to slaughter,
And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers,
So He did not open His mouth.
8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away;
And as for His generation, who considered
That He was cut off out of the land of (F1)the living,
(C1)That for the transgression of my people, striking was due to Him?
9 So His grave was assigned with wicked men,
Yet He was with a (C1)rich man in His death,
(C2)Because He had (C3)done no violence,
Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
10 But (F1)Yahweh was pleased
To (C1)crush Him, (F2)(C2)putting Him to grief;
If You would place His soul as a guilt (C3)offering,
He will see (C4)His seed,
He will prolong His days,
And the (F3)good (C5)pleasure of Yahweh will succeed in His hand.
11 As a result of the (F1)anguish of His soul,
He will (C1)see (F2)it and be satisfied;
By His (C2)knowledge the Righteous One,
My Servant, will (F3)justify the many,
As He will (C3)bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore, I will divide for Him a (C1)portion with the many,
And He will divide the spoil with the strong;
Because He poured out (C2)His soul to death,
And was (C3)numbered with the transgressors;
Yet He Himself (F1)(C4)bore the sin of many,
And interceded for the transgressors.
