Contextual Overview

9 And He began to speak this parable to the people: A certain man planted a vineyard and let it out to vinedressers. And he left the country for long periods of time . Isa. 5:1, 2 10 And in season, he sent a slave to the vinedressers, that they might give him the fruit of the vineyard. But the vinedressers sent him away empty, beating him . 11 And he again sent another slave. But they also sent that one away empty, beating and insulting him . 12 And he again sent a third. But they also threw this one out, wounding him . 13 And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps, having seen this one, they will respect him . 14 And having seen him, the vinedressers reasoned with themselves, saying, This is the heir. Come let us kill him so that the inheritance may become ours. 15 And throwing him out of the vineyard, they killed him . Therefore, what will the lord of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and will destroy these vinedressers and will give the vineyard to others. And hearing this, they said, Let it not be! 17 And looking at them He said, What then is this which has been written, "The stone that the builders rejected, this one came to be for the Head of the Corner"? Psa. 118:22 18 Everyone falling on that Stone will be broken in pieces but on whomever It falls, It will crush him.

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

shall fall: This is an allusion to the Jewish mode of stoning. "The place of stoning was twice as high as a man. From the top of this one of the witnesses struck the culprit on the loins, and felled him to the ground: if he died of this, well; if not, the other witness threw a stone upon his heart," etc. Our Lord seems to refer not only to the dreadful crushing of the Jews by the Romans, but also to their general dispersion to the present day. Isaiah 8:14, Isaiah 8:15, Daniel 2:34, Daniel 2:35, Daniel 2:44, Daniel 2:45, Zechariah 12:3, Matthew 21:34, 1 Thessalonians 2:16

Gill's Notes on the Bible

Whosoever shall fall on that stone, shall be broken,.... Not who shall fall upon Christ by faith, and build upon him as the foundation stone, for such shall be saved; but that stumble at him, and are offended with him, and fall by unbelief and hardness of heart; such do themselves much hurt and mischief and expose themselves to danger and ruin; they bid very fair for destruction:

but on whomsoever it shall fall; as it did with its full weight upon the Jews at their destruction, and as it will upon all Christless sinners at the last day:

it will grind him to powder; the ruin of such will be unavoidable, and there will be no recovery;
