Blessed are they that keepe his testimonies: and that seeke him with the whole heart. They also doe no iniquitie: they walke in his wayes. Thou hast commaunded vs to keepe thy precepts diligently. O that my wayes were directed to keepe thy statutes! Then shall I not bee ashamed: when I haue respect vnto all thy commandements. I will praise thee with vprightnesse of heart: when I shall haue learned thy righteous iudgements. I will keepe thy statutes: O forsake me not vtterly. [BETH.] Wherewithall shall a yong man cleanse his way? by taking heede thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart haue I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy Commandements. Thy word haue I hidde in mine heart: that I might not sinne against thee. Blessed art thou, O Lord: teach me thy statutes. With my lips haue I declared all the iudgements of thy mouth. I haue reioyced in the way of thy testimonies: as much as in all riches. I will meditate in thy precepts: and haue respect vnto thy wayes. I will delight my selfe in thy statutes: I will not forget thy word. [GIMEL.] Deale bountifully with thy seruant; that I may liue, and keepe thy word. Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wonderous things out of thy Law. I am a stranger in the earth: hide not thy commandements from me. My soule breaketh for the longing: that it hath vnto thy iudgements at all times. Thou hast rebuked the proud that are cursed: which doe erre from thy Commandements. Remooue from me reproch and contempt: for I haue kept thy testimonies. Princes also did sit and speake against me: but thy seruant did meditate in thy statutes. Thy testimonies also are my delight: and my counsellers. [DALETH.] My soule cleaueth vnto the dust: quicken thou mee according to thy word. I haue declared my wayes, and thou heardest me: teach me thy Statutes. Make me to vnderstand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talke of thy wonderous workes. My soule melteth for heauines: strengthen thou me according vnto thy word. Remoue from mee the way of lying: and grant me thy Law graciously. I haue chosen the way of trueth: thy iudgements haue I laid before me. I haue stucke vnto thy Testimonies: O Lord put me not to shame. I will runne the way of thy Commandements: when thou shalt enlarge my heart. [HE.] Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy Statutes: and I shall keepe it vnto the end. Giue me vnderstanding, and I shall keepe thy Law: yea I shall obserue it with my whole heart. Make me to goe in the path of thy commandements: for therein doe I delight. Incline my heart vnto thy testimonies: and not to couetousnesse. Turne away mine eyes from beholding vanitie: and quicken thou me in thy way. Stablish thy word vnto thy seruant: who is deuoted to thy feare. Turne away my reproch which I feare: for thy iudgements are good. Behold, I haue longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousnesse. [VAV.] Let thy mercies come also vnto me, O Lord: euen thy saluation, according to thy word. So shall I haue wherewith to answere him that reprocheth me: for I trust in thy word. And take not the word of trueth vtterly out of my mouth: for I haue hoped in thy iudgements. So shall I keepe thy Law continually: for euer and euer. And I wil walke at libertie: for I seeke thy precepts. I will speake of thy testimonies also before kings, & wil not be ashamed. And I will delight my selfe in thy commandements, which I haue loued. My hands also will I lift vp vnto thy commandements, which I haue loued: and I will meditate in thy statutes. [ZAIN.] Remember the word vnto thy seruant: vpon which thou hast caused me to hope. This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me. The proud haue had mee greatly in derision: yet haue I not declined from thy Law. I remembred thy iudgements of old, O Lord: and haue comforted my selfe. Horrour hath taken holde vpon me, because of the wicked that forsake thy Law. Thy statutes haue bin my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. I haue remembred thy name, O Lord, in the night, and haue kept thy Law. This I had: because I kept thy precepts. [CHETH.] Thou art my portion, O Lord, I haue said, that I would keepe thy words. I intreated thy fauour with my whole heart: be mercifull vnto mee according to thy word. I thought on my wayes: and turned my feete vnto thy Testimonies. I made haste; and delayed not to keepe thy commandements. The bands of the wicked haue robbed me: but I haue not forgotten thy lawe. At mid-night I will rise to giue thankes vnto thee: because of thy righteous iudgements. I am a companion of all them that feare thee: and of them that keepe thy precepts. The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes. [TETH.] Thou hast dealt well with thy seruant, Oh Lord, according vnto thy word. Teach me good iudgement and knowledge: for I haue beleeued thy commandements. Before I was afflicted, I went astray: but now haue I kept thy word. Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes. The proud haue forged a lie against me: but I will keepe thy precepts with my whole heart. Their heart is as fat as grease: but I delight in thy law. It is good for me that I haue bene afflicted: that I might learne thy statutes.

THE MESSAGE
With your very own hands you formed me; now breathe your wisdom over me so I can understand you. When they see me waiting, expecting your Word, those who fear you will take heart and be glad. I can see now, God , that your decisions are right; your testing has taught me what's true and right. Oh, love me—and right now!—hold me tight! just the way you promised. Now comfort me so I can live, really live; your revelation is the tune I dance to. Let the fast-talking tricksters be exposed as frauds; they tried to sell me a bill of goods, but I kept my mind fixed on your counsel. Let those who fear you turn to me for evidence of your wise guidance. And let me live whole and holy, soul and body, so I can always walk with my head held high.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

y, JOD.--The Tenth Part.

Ver. 73. JOD. Thy hands have made me and fashioned me,.... Not the psalmist himself, nor his parents, but the Lord alone: for though parents are fathers of our flesh, they are but instruments in the hand of the Lord; though man is produced by natural generation, yet the formation and fashioning of men are as much owing to the power and wisdom of God, which are his hands, as the formation of Adam was. Job owns this in much the same words as the psalmist does, Job 10:8; see

Psalms 139:13. God not only gives conception, and forms the embryo in the womb, but fashions and gives it its comely and proportionate parts. Or, "covered me"; the first word may respect conception, and this the covering of the fetus with the secundine t; see Psalms 139:13;

give me understanding, that I may learn thy commandments; since he had a proper comely body, and a reasonable soul; though debased by sin, and brought into a state of ignorance, especially as to spiritual things, he desires he might have a spiritual understanding given him; of the word of God in general, the truths and doctrines of it, which are not understood by the natural man; and of the precepts of it in particular, that he might so learn them as to know the sense and meaning of them, their purity and spirituality; and so as to do them from a principle of love, in faith, and to the glory of God: for it is not a bare learning them by heart, or committing them to memory, nor a mere theory of them, but the practice of them in faith and love, which is here meant.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Thy hands have made me - This commences a new division of the psalm, in which each verse begins with the Hebrew letter Jod (י y) - or “i” - the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet, called in Matthew 5:18, “jot;” “one jot or tittle shall in no wise pass from the law.” The words “thy hands have made me” are expressive of the idea that he had been formed or moulded by God - as the “hands” are the instruments by which we do anything. See the notes at Job 10:8; compare Psalms 100:3.

And fashioned me - Fitted me; shaped me, formed me as I am. He had received alike his existence and the particular form of his existence from God - as a man makes a statue or image. Compare Psalms 139:13-16.

Give me understanding ... - As I have derived my being from thee, so I am wholly dependent on thee to carry out the purpose for which I have been made. My Maker alone can give me understanding. I have no resources in myself. See Psalms 119:34.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

LETTER י YOD. - Tenth Division

Verse Psalms 119:73. Thy hands have made me — Thou hast formed the mass out of which I was made; and fashioned me - thou hast given me that particular form that distinguishes me from all thy other creatures.

Give me understanding — As thou hast raised me above the beasts that perish in my form and mode of life, teach me that I may live for a higher and nobler end, in loving, serving, and enjoying thee for ever. Show me that I was made for heaven, not for earth.
