¹ NOW before the feast of the passover, Jesus knew the hour had come to depart from this world to his Father. And he loved his own who were in this world, and he loved them unto the end. ² During supper, Satan put into the heart of Judas, son of Simon of Iscariot, to deliver him. ³ But Jesus, because he knew that the Father had given everything into his hands, and that he came from God, and was going to God, ⁴ He rose from supper and laid aside his robes; and he took an apron and tied it around his loins. ⁵ Then he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe them with the apron which was tied around his loins. ⁶ When he came to Simon Peter, Simon said to him, You, my Lord, are you going to wash my feet? ⁷ Jesus answered and said to him, What I am doing, you do not know now, but later you will understand. ⁸ Then Simon Peter said to him, You will never wash my feet. For he knew who should betray him,.... That is, Jesus, as Beza's ancient copy, and the Syriac and Persic versions read. This he knew from the beginning; not only from the beginning of his ministry, when he chose his twelve apostles, but from the beginning of time, yea, from everlasting; this being fixed by the determinate counsel of God, which he, as the omniscient God, was privy to: he knew what preparations were making, and how things were then working, in order to bring it about; he knew that Satan had already put it into Judas's heart, and that he had consented to it;

therefore, said he, ye are not all clean: he does not mention his name, though he could have done so, it not being as yet proper to make so full a discovery of him, before the matter was ripe for execution; and also to put all the disciples upon examination of themselves.
