¹ Then Jesus left there and went into the area of Judea and across the Jordan River. Again, many people came to him, and Jesus taught them as he always did. ² Some Pharisees came to Jesus and tried to make him say something wrong. They asked him, "Is it right for a man to divorce his wife?" ³ Jesus answered, "What did Moses command you to do?" ⁴ The Pharisees said, "Moses allowed a man to divorce his wife by writing a certificate of divorce." ⁵ Jesus said, "Moses wrote that command for you because you refused to accept God's teaching. ⁶ But when God made the world, ‘he made people male and female.' ⁷ ‘That is why a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife. ⁸ And the two people will become one.' So they are no longer two, but one. ⁹ God has joined them together, so no one should separate them." ¹⁰ Later, when the followers and Jesus were in the house, they asked him again about the question of divorce.

And the twain shall be one flesh,.... This is the remaining part of the citation out of Genesis 2:24;

Genesis 2:24- :;

so then they are no more twain; but one flesh; as Adam and Eve were both by creation and marriage: and so two persons, a man and woman, being lawfully married together, become one flesh, or "one body", as the Arabic and Persic versions render the phrase; and therefore the wife is to be loved by the husband as his own body, and from whom there should be no separation, until death, but in case of adultery;

And if a woman shall put away her husband - It would seem, from this, that a woman, among the Jews, had the power of separating herself from her husband, yet this right is not given her by the law of Moses. There is not, however, any positive evidence that females often claimed or exercised this right. Cases had occurred, indeed, in which it had been done. The wife of Herod had rejected her former husband and married Herod. And though instances of this kind “might” have been attempted to be defended by the example of Pagans, yet our Saviour was desirous of showing them that it did not free them from the charge of adultery. The apostles were going forth to teach Pagan nations, and it was proper for Christ to teach them how to act in such cases, and to show them that they were cases of real adultery.
