Contextual Overview

1And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads. On its horns were ten crowns, and on its heads were blasphemous names. 2The beast I saw was like a leopard, its feet were like a bear’s, and its mouth was like a lion’s mouth. The dragon gave the beast his power, his throne, and great authority. 3One of its heads appeared to be fatally wounded, but its fatal wound was healed. 4They worshiped the dragon because he gave authority to the beast. And they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast? Who is able to wage war against it?” 5The beast was given a mouth to utter boasts and blasphemies. It was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. 6It began to speak blasphemies against God: to blaspheme his name and his dwelling—those who dwell in heaven. 7And it was permitted to wage war against the saints and to conquer them. It was also given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation. 8All those who live on the earth will worship it, everyone whose name was not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slaughtered. 9If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen.10If anyone is to be taken captive, into captivity he goes.If anyone is to be killed with a sword, with a sword he will be killed.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

If any man have an ear, let him hear. And diligently attend to this mystical description of antichrist, as being matter of some difficulty to understand, as well as of great moment and importance, and seriously consider it, that he may know him, and his followers, and avoid them; :-.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

If any man have an ear, let him hear - See the notes on Revelation 2:7. The idea here is, that what was here said respecting the “beast” was worthy of special attention, as it pertained to most important events in the history of the church.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Revelation 13:9. If any man have an ear, let him hear. — These words are evidently introduced to impress the reader with the awfulness of what has just been spoken-all shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of life, as well as to fix his attention upon the following words:-
