1The Lord instructed Moses: 2“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When you enter the land I am giving you to settle in, 3and you make a fire offering to the Lord from the herd or flock—either a burnt offering or a sacrifice, to fulfill a vow, or as a freewill offering, or at your appointed festivals—to produce a pleasing aroma for the Lord, 4the one presenting his offering to the Lord is also to present a grain offering of two quarts of fine flour mixed with a quart of oil. 5Prepare a quart of wine as a drink offering with the burnt offering or sacrifice of each lamb. 6“If you prepare a grain offering with a ram, it is to be four quarts of fine flour mixed with a third of a gallon of oil. 7Also present a third of a gallon of wine for a drink offering as a pleasing aroma to the Lord. 8“If you prepare a young bull as a burnt offering or as a sacrifice, to fulfill a vow, or as a fellowship offering to the Lord, 9a grain offering of six quarts of fine flour mixed with two quarts of oil is to be presented with the bull. 10Also present two quarts of wine as a drink offering. Of the first of your dough shall ye give unto the Lord,.... As an acknowledgment of his being the sovereign Lord and possessor of heaven and earth, and of his being the owner and proprietor of the land of Canaan; and by way of thankfulness to him for the plenty of bread corn he had given them; and wherefore this cake was to he heaved or lifted up towards him in heaven, as follows:
an heave offering in your generations: for this respected not only the first time of their entrance into the land of Canaan, but was to be observed every year when they made their first dough, and was to continue as long as the ceremonial law lasted: this cake was anciently given to the priest, which is meant by giving it to the Lord, but now the Jews take it and cast it into the fire and burn it s the apostle seems to allude to this cake of the first dough in Romans 11:16.
