Jonah 2

   |

Jonah’s Prayer

1 Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish:(C1)

2 I called to the Lord in my distress,(C1)
and he answered me.
I cried out for help from deep inside(F1) Sheol;(C2)
you heard my voice.(C3)
3 You threw me into the depths,(C1)
into the heart of the seas,(C2)
and the current(F1) overcame me.
All your breakers and your billows swept over me.(C3)
4 But I said, “I have been banished(C1)
from your sight,(C2)
yet I will look once more(F1)
toward your holy temple.(C3)
5 The water engulfed me up to the neck;(F1)(C1)
the watery depths overcame me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.(C2)
6 I sank to the foundations of the mountains,(C1)
the earth’s gates shut behind me forever!(C2)
Then you raised my life(C3) from the Pit, Lord my God!(C4)
7 As my life was fading away,(C1)
I remembered the Lord,(C2)
and my prayer came to you,(C3)
to your holy temple.(C4)
8 Those who cherish worthless idols(C1)
abandon their faithful love,(C2)
9 but as for me, I will sacrifice(C1) to you
with a voice of thanksgiving.(C2)
I will fulfill(C3) what I have vowed.
Salvation(F1) belongs to the Lord.”(C4)

10 Then the Lord commanded the fish,(C1) and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
