Cross-References
Adam was intimate with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain. She said, "I have had a male child with the Lord 's help."
In the course of time Cain presented some of the land's produce as an offering to the Lord .
And Abel also presented an offering—some of the firstborn of his flock and their fat portions. The Lord had regard for Abel and his offering,
but He did not have regard for Cain and his offering. Cain was furious, and he looked despondent.
Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.
So now you are cursed, alienated, from the ground that opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood you have shed.
But Cain answered the Lord , "My punishment is too great to bear!
For anger kills a fool, and jealousy slays the gullible.
"Come, let us discuss this," says the Lord . "Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are as red as crimson, they will be like wool.
This is what the Lord says: What fault did your fathers find in Me that they went so far from Me, followed worthless idols, and became worthless themselves?
Gill's Notes on the Bible
And Abiathar [was] over the household,.... Steward of the household:
and Adoniram the son of Abda [was] over the tribute, over those that collected the tribute, as the Targum, whether from the people of Israel or other nations, or both; this man was in the same post in David's time, 2 Samuel 20:24.
Barnes' Notes on the Bible
Over the household - Comptroller of the household, like the “Steward” of the Persian court. On the importance of this office, see 2 Kings 18:18, and compare Isaiah 22:15-25.
The tribute - The marginal reading, “levy,” is preferable. The reference is to the forced laborers whom Solomon employed in his great works (marginal reference).
Clarke's Notes on the Bible
Verse 1 Kings 4:6. Ahishar was over the household — the king's chamberlain.
Adoniram - was over the tribute. — What we call chancellor of the exchequer. He received and brought into the treasury all the proceeds of taxes and tributes. He was in this office under David; see 2 Samuel 20:24.
