Contextual Overview

28On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and struck it down with the sword, along with its king. He devoted to destruction everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. So he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. 29Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah. 30And the LORD also delivered that city and its king into the hands of Israel, and Joshua struck down all the people with the sword, leaving no survivors. And he did to the king of Libnah as he had done to the king of Jericho. 31And Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish. They laid siege to it and fought against it.32And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hands of Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He struck down all the people with the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. 33At that time Horam king of Gezer went to help Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his people, leaving no survivors. 34So Joshua moved on from Lachish to Eglon, and all Israel with him. They laid siege to it and fought against it. 35That day they captured Eglon and it struck down with the sword, and Joshua devoted to destruction everyone in the city, just as he had done to Lachish. 36Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and fought against it. 37They captured it and struck down with the sword its king, all its villages, and all the people. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done at Eglon; he devoted to destruction Hebron and everyone in it.

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

Lachish: Lachish was also situated in the south of Judah, seven miles south from Eleutheropolis, according to Eusebius and Jerome. It appears to have been anciently a very strong place; for though the people were panic struck, and the Israelites flushed with success, yet Joshua could not reduce it till the second day; and the king of Assyria afterwards was obliged to raise the siege. Joshua 10:3, Joshua 10:5, Joshua 12:11, Joshua 15:39, 2 Kings 19:8, 2 Chronicles 11:9, Isaiah 37:8, Micah 1:13

Reciprocal: 2 Kings 14:19 - fled to Lachish 2 Chronicles 25:27 - Lachish 2 Chronicles 32:9 - Lachish

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And Joshua passed from Libnah, and all Israel with him, unto Lachish,.... Which, according to Bunting d, was eight miles from Libnah, and twenty miles from Jerusalem to the southwest of this city; see Joshua 10:5;

and encamped against it, and fought against it; for it seems this city stood out, and would not surrender at once, which obliged Joshua to encamp about it, and besiege it.
