Contextual Overview

1On the day that Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle and had anointed and consecrated it and all its furniture, and the altar and all its utensils; he also anointed them and consecrated them [for holy use]. 2Then the leaders of Israel, the heads of their fathers' households, made offerings. (These were the leaders of the tribes; they were the ones who were over the men who were numbered.) 3They brought their offering before the LORD, six covered carts and twelve oxen; a cart for each two of the leaders and an ox for each one; and they presented them before the tabernacle. 4Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 5"Accept these things from them, so that they may be used in the service of the Tent of Meeting (tabernacle), and give them to the Levites, to each man according to his service." 6So Moses took the carts and the oxen and gave them to the Levites. 7He gave two carts and four oxen to the sons of Gershon, according to their service [in transporting the tabernacle]; 8and he gave four carts and eight oxen to the sons of Merari, according to their service [in transporting the tabernacle], under the supervision of Ithamar the son of Aaron, the [high] priest.9But to the sons of Kohath he gave nothing, because they were assigned the care of the holy things which they carried on their shoulders [when the tabernacle was moved].

Bible Verse Review
  from Treasury of Scripure Knowledge

four wagons: Numbers 3:36, Numbers 3:37, Numbers 4:28-33

the sons: Though the Merarites were the most numerous, yet they had the greatest burden, namely, the boards, bars, pillars, and sockets, to carry - Numbers 4:31, Numbers 4:32, Numbers 4:48. Therefore they had double the number of waggons to what the Gershonites had assigned them.

Reciprocal: 1 Chronicles 6:47 - Merari

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And four wagons and eight oxen he gave to the sons of Merari,.... All the remaining wagons and oxen, which were double the number given to the Gershonites:

according unto their service; being much heavier than theirs, having all the boards, pillars, sockets, pins; cords, c. to bear and carry: thus Moses was directed of God wisely to dispose of those carriages, in proportion to the services each was employed in and in a spiritual way, as the day, duty, and service of the people of God be, he proportions grace and strength to them to answer thereunto:

under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest; under whose care, inspection, and direction, were both the Gershonites and Merarites, Numbers 4:28; and by whom were delivered, according to the instruction of Moses, the several wagons and oxen, to them.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

To the Gershonites, who had to transport the hangings and coverings of the tabernacle, two wagons are assigned: to the Merarites, who had the charge of the solid parts of the tabernacle, four wagons. The furniture and vessels the Kohathites were to carry on their own shoulders. Compare Numbers 3:25-26, Numbers 3:31, Numbers 3:36-37.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Numbers 7:8. Four wagons - unto the sons of Merari — Because they had the boards, bars, pillars, and sockets of the tabernacle to carry, Numbers 4:31-32, therefore they had as many more wagons as the Gershonites.
