Contextual Overview

7Then came the preparation day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. 8So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so that we may eat it." 9They asked Him, "Where do You want us to prepare it?" 10He replied, "When you have entered the city, a man carrying an earthen jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house that he enters. 11"And say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks, "Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?"' 12"Then he will show you a large upstairs room, furnished [with carpets and dining couches]; prepare the meal there." 13They left and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover. 14When the hour [for the meal] had come, Jesus reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15He said to them, "I have earnestly wanted to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16for I say to you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God."

Gill's Notes on the Bible

For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine,.... That is, wine; see the blessing at the passover cup in the notes on the preceding verse:

until the kingdom of God shall come; with power, as in Mark 9:1 in the resurrection of Christ from the dead; in his exaltation and session at God's right hand; in the pouring forth of the Spirit on the apostles; in the conversion of great multitudes, both in Judea, and in the Gentile world; in the destruction of the Jews; in the latter day glory; and in the ultimate state of happiness and bliss in the world to come. The Ethiopic version reads, "until I drink it new in the kingdom of God"; as in Mark 14:25.

Clarke's Notes on the Bible

Verse Luke 22:18. I will not drink of the fruit of the vine — That is, before the time of another passover, the Holy Ghost shall descend, the Gospel of the kingdom be established, and the sacramental supper shall take place of the paschal lamb; for in a few hours his crucifixion was to take place. Matthew 26:29; Matthew 26:29.
