and said to him: “Tell us, by what authority are you doing these things? Who is it who gave you this authority?”
And spake vnto him, saying, Tell vs, by what authoritie doest thou these things? or who is hee that gaue thee this authoritie?
And spake unto him, saying, Tell us, by what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?
and said to him, "Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority."
and they declared, saying to Him, "Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?"
saying, "Tell us what authority you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?"
and they spoke, saying to Him, "Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?"

"Tell us," they said, "by what authority are You doing these things, and who gave You this authority?"
asked him, "What right do you have to do these things? Who gave you this authority?"
and said, "Tell us, what s'mikhah do you have that authorizes you to do these things? Who gave you this s'mikhah?"
and spoke to him saying, Tell us by what authority thou doest these things, or who is it who has given thee this authority?
They said, "Tell us what authority you have to do these things. Who gave you this authority?"

That the chief priests and the scribes and the rulers of the people came to him and said, Make clear to us by what authority you do these things and who gave you this authority.

and spake, saying, unto him - Tell us, by what authority, these things, thou art doing, and, who, is it, that gave thee this authority.
And spoke to him, saying: Tell us, by what authority dost thou these things? Or, who is he that hath given thee this authority?
and said to him, "Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority."
and spake vnto him sayinge. Tell vs by what auctorite thou doest these thinges? Ether who is he yt gave ye this auctorite?
and spake unto him, saying, `Tell us by what authority thou dost these things? or who is he that gave to thee this authority?'
and spake vnto him, and sayde: Tell vs, by what auctorite doest thou these thinges? Or who gaue the this auctorite?
and thus accosted him, tell us by what authority do you act thus? and whence do you derive that authority?

And so in the matter of the envoys of the rulers of Babylon, who were sent to him to inquire about the wonder that had happened in the land, God left him alone only to test him, in order to know everything that was in his heart.

And spoke unto him, saying, tell us by what authority doest thou these things?.... The Arabic and Ethiopic versions read, "this thing"; as if the sanhedrim only referred to his preaching the Gospel, which is mentioned in the preceding verse, and was what he was about when they came to him: but the Persic version reads, "all these things"; not only preaching, but working miracles; and particularly driving the buyers and sellers out of the temple, which especially affected them, they losing their rents thereby:
