THE MESSAGE
When the Chaldean army pulled back from Jerusalem, Jeremiah left Jerusalem to go over to the territory of Benjamin to take care of some personal business. When he got to the Benjamin Gate, the officer on guard there, Irijah son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, grabbed Jeremiah the prophet, accusing him, "You're deserting to the Chaldeans!"
New American Standard Bible (1995)
Now it happened when the army of the Chaldeans had lifted the siege from Jerusalem because of Pharaoh's army,

Contextual Overview

11Now it happened when the army of the Chaldeans departed from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh's [approaching] army,12that Jeremiah left Jerusalem [during the withdrawal of the Chaldean invaders] to go to [Anathoth, his hometown, in] the land of Benjamin to take possession of [the title to] the land [which he had purchased] there among the people. 13When he was at the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah the son of Hananiah was there; and he seized and arrested Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "You are deserting to join the Chaldeans [of Babylon]!" 14But Jeremiah said, "That is a lie! I am not deserting to join the Chaldeans." But the guard would not listen to him. So Irijah took Jeremiah and brought him to the princes (court officials). 15The princes were enraged with Jeremiah and beat him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe—for they had made that the prison. 16When Jeremiah had come into the vaulted cell in the dungeon and had remained there many days, 17Zedekiah the king sent and brought him out; and in his palace the king secretly asked him, "Is there any word from the LORD?" And Jeremiah said, "There is!" Then he said, "You will be handed over to the king of Babylon." 18Moreover, Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "In what way have I sinned against you, or against your servants, or against this people, that you have put me in prison? 19"Where then are your prophets who prophesied to you, saying, 'The king of Babylon will not come against you or against this land?' 20"Therefore now, please listen, O my lord the king; please let my petition come before you and be acceptable and do not make me return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, that I may not die there."

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans were broken up from Jerusalem,.... When the siege of the city was broken up and raised: or, when they "went up from Jerusalem" c; were gone from it;

for fear of Pharaoh's army; or rather "because of Pharaoh's army" d. The word "fear" is not in the text; nor did they leave Jerusalem for fear of his army, but to meet it, and give it battle, as they did; however, by this means there was a freer egress and regress from and to the city.

c בחעלות "cum recessisset", Cocceius; "ascendisset", Schmidt. d מפני חיל "propter exercitum", Cocceius, Schmidt; "propter copias", Junius & Tremellius, Piscator.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

Was broken up for fear of - Or, “had got them up from the face of.” It was simply a strategic movement.
