Contextual Overview

13So King Rehoboam established himself in Jerusalem and reigned. Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city in which the LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel to put His Name. And his mother was Naamah the Ammonitess. 14He did evil because he did not set his heart to seek and worship and honor the LORD.15Now the acts of Rehoboam, from the first to the last, are they not written in the records of Shemaiah the prophet and of Iddo the seer, according to genealogical enrollment? There were wars between Rehoboam [of Judah] and Jeroboam [of Israel] continually. 16And Rehoboam slept with his fathers [in death] and was buried in the City of David; and Abijah his son became king in his place.

Gill's Notes on the Bible

And he did evil,.... Committed idolatry, relapsed into that, his humiliation not being hearty and sincere:

because he prepared not his heart to seek the Lord; by prayer and supplication, and by an attendance on the service and worship of God; for though he did these things outwardly, yet not sincerely and heartily; he did not engage in them seriously and in good earnest, with affection and fervour.

Barnes' Notes on the Bible

He prepared not his heart ... - See the margin. Rehoboam’s sin was want of earnestness and consistency.
