David Flees to Nob

¹ David went to the priest Ahimelech^(C1) at Nob.^(C2) Ahimelech was afraid to meet David, so he said to him, “Why are you alone and no one is with you?”

¹ Then came David to Nov to Achimelekh the Kohen: and Achimelekh came to meet David trembling, and said to him, Why are you alone, and no man with you?

David Encounters the Priests of Nob

¹ Now David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And Ahimelech came trembling to meet David, and he said to him, "Why are you alone and there are no men with you?"

David and the Holy Bread

¹ David went to Nob to see Ahimelech the priest. Ahimelech shook with fear when he saw David, and he asked, "Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?"

Ahimelech Helps David

¹ David went to see Ahimelech, a priest who lived in the town of Nob. Ahimelech was trembling with fear as he came out to meet David. "Why are you alone?" Ahimelech asked. "Why isn't anyone else with you?"

¹ And David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest; and Ahimelech trembled at meeting David, and said to him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?

David Goes to See Ahimelech the Priest

¹ Then David left and Jonathan went back to the town. David went to the town named Nob^[a] to see Ahimelech the priest.

Ahimelech went out to meet David. He was afraid of David and asked, "Why are you alone? Why isn't anyone with you?"

¹ THEN David came to Noh, to Ahimeleck the priest; and Ahimeleck was afraid at meeting David, and said to him, Why have you come alone, and no man with you?

¹ Then David came to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest. And when Ahimelech met David, he trembled and asked him, “Why are you alone? Why is no one with you?”

David and the Holy Bread

^1 [a] David came to Nob to the priest Ahimelech. Ahimelech came trembling to meet David, and said to him, "Why are you alone, and no one with you?" ² David said to the priest Ahimelech, "The king has charged me with a matter, and said to me, ‘No one must know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.' I have made an appointment^[b] with the young men for such and such a place. ³ Now then, what have you at hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here." ⁴ The priest answered David, "I have no ordinary bread at hand, only holy bread—provided that the young men have kept themselves from women." ⁵ David answered the priest, "Indeed women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition; the vessels of the young men are holy even when it is a common journey; how much more today will their vessels be holy?" ⁶ So the priest gave him the holy bread; for there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.

⁷ Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; his name was Doeg the Edomite, the chief of Saul's shepherds.

⁸ David said to Ahimelech, "Is there no spear or sword here with you? I did not bring my sword or my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste." ⁹ The priest said, "The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the valley of Elah, is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod; if you will take that, take it, for there is none here except that one." David said, "There is none like it; give it to me."

David Flees to Gath

¹⁰ David rose and fled that day from Saul; he went to King Achish of Gath. ¹¹ The servants of Achish said to him, "Is this not David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances,

¹² David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of King Achish of Gath. ¹³ So he changed his behavior before them; he pretended to be mad when in their presence.^[c] He scratched marks on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle run down his beard. ¹⁴ Achish said to his servants, "Look, you see the man is mad; why then have you brought him to me? ¹⁵ Do I lack madmen, that you have brought this fellow to play the madman in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?"

¹ Then came David to Nob, unto Ahimelech, the priest, - and Ahimelech trembled when he met David, and said unto him - Why art thou, alone, and, no man, with thee?

¹ And David came to Nobe, to Achimelech, the priest and Achimelech was astonished at David’s coming. And he said to him: Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?

¹ Then came David to Nob to Ahim'elech the priest; and Ahim'elech came to meet David trembling, and said to him, "Why are you alone, and no one with you?"

¹ And David comes to Nob, to Ahimelech the priest, and Ahimelech trembles at meeting David and says to him, "Why [are] you alone, and no man [is] with you?"

David Pretends to Go Crazy

¹ David went on his way and Jonathan returned to town.

David went to Nob, to Ahimelech the Priest. Ahimelech was alarmed as he went out to greet David: "What are you doing here all by yourself—and not a soul with you?"

² David answered the priest Ahimelech, “The king gave me a mission, but he told me, ‘Don’t let anyone know anything about the mission I’m sending you on or what I have ordered you to do.’ I have stationed my young men at a certain place. ² David said to Achimelekh the Kohen, The king has commanded me a business, and has said to me, Let no man know anything of the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you: and I have appointed the young men to such and such a place.

² And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place. ² So David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘No one must know anything about this matter on which I am sending you, with which I have charged you and the servants.'" So I have arranged to meet with my servants at a certain place.^{[a] 2} And David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has charged me with a matter and said to me, ‘Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.' I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place.

² David answered him, "The king gave me a special order. He told me, ‘No one must know what I am sending you to do or what I told you to do.' I told my men where to meet me. ² David replied to Ahimelech the priest, "The king instructed me to do something, but he said to me, ‘Don't let anyone know the reason I am sending you or the instructions I have given you.' I have told my soldiers to wait at a certain place. ² David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commissioned me with a matter and has told me, '^(C1)Let no one know anything about the matter for which I am sending you and with which I have commissioned you. I have directed the young men to a certain place.'² David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commissioned me with a matter and has said to me, '^(C1)No one is to know anything about the matter on which I am sending you and with which I have commissioned you; and I have directed the young men to a certain place.'² And Dauid saide to Ahimelech the Priest, The King hath commaunded mee a certaine thing, and hath sayd vnto me, Let no man know whereabout I sende thee, and what I haue commaunded thee: and I haue appointed my seruants to such and such places.² And David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commanded me with a matter and has said to me, '^(C1)Let no one know anything about the matter on which I am sending you and with which I have commanded you; and I have directed the young men to a certain place.'

² "I'm on a mission for King Saul," David answered. "He ordered me not to tell anyone what the mission is all about, so I had my soldiers stay somewhere else.

² And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has commanded me a business, and has said to me, Let no man know anything of the business whereon I send thee, and what I have commanded thee; and I have directed the young men to such and such a place.

² David answered him, "The king gave me a special order. He told me, ‘Don't let anyone know about this mission. No one must know what I told you to do.' I told my men where to meet me.² And David said to Ahimeleck the priest, The king has entrusted me with a matter, and has said to me, Let no man know the thing for which I send you, and what I have commanded you; and I have stationed my servants at hidden and obscure places.

² "I am here on the king's business," David answered. "He told me not to let anyone know what he sent me to do. As for my men, I have told them to meet me at a certain place. ² And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has commanded me a matter; and he said to me, Do not let a man know anything of the matter about which I am sending you, and which I told you.And I have directed the young men to suchand such a place.² Dauid sayde vnto Ahimelech the prest: The kinge hath comytted a matter vnto me, and sayde: Let noma knowe wherfore I haue sent the, and what I haue commaunded the: for I haue appoynted my seruautes to mete me here & there. ² And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know anything of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed the young men to such and such a place. ² And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has given me orders and has said to me, Say nothing to anyone about the business on which I am sending you and the orders I have given you: and a certain place has been fixed to which the young men are to go.² And Dauid said to Ahimelech the priest: The king hath commaunded me a certaine thing, and hath sayd vnto me, Let no man know wher about I send thee, and what I haue commaunded thee: And I haue appoynted my seruauntes to suche and suche places.² Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest; and Ahimelech came to meet David trembling, and said unto him: 'Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?'² And Dauid said vnto Ahimelech the Priest, The king hath commanded me a businesse, and hath said vnto me, Let no man know any thing of the businesse whereabout I send thee, and what I haue commanded thee: and I haue appointed my seruants to such and such a place. ² And David said to the priest, The king gave me a command to-day, and said to me, Let no one know the matter on which I send thee, an concerning which I have charged thee: and I have charged my servants to be in the place that is called, The faithfulness of God, phellani maemoni. ² And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed the young men to such and such a place. ² “The king has given me a mission,” David replied. “He told me no one is to know about the mission or charge. And I have directed my young men to meet me at a certain place.² And Dauid seide to Achymelech preest, The kyng comaundide to me a word, and seide, No man wite the thing, for which thou art sent fro me, and what maner comaundementis Y yaf to thee; for Y seide also to children, that thei schulden go in to that `and that place;<sup>2</sup> And David saith to Ahimelech the priest, `The king hath commanded me a matter, and he saith unto me, Let no man know anything of the matter about which I am sending thee, and which I have commanded thee; and the young men I have caused to know at such and such a place;² And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has commanded me a business, and has said to me, Let no man know anything of the business whereabout I send you, and what I have commanded you: and I have arranged a meeting with the young men to such and such a place.² And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said to me, Let no man know any thing of the business about which I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed [my] servants to such and such a place.² David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has commanded me a business, and has said to me, Let no man know anything of the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you: and I have appointed the young men to such and such a place. ² So David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has ordered me on some business, and said to me, "Do not let anyone know anything about the business on which I send you, or what I have commanded you.' And I have directed my young men to such and such a place.

² "The king has sent me on a private matter," David said. "He told me not to tell anyone why I am here. I have told my men where to meet me later. ² David said to Ahimelech the religious leader, "The king has given me something to do. And he has said to me, ‘Let no one know anything about what I have sent you to do.' I have told the young men to meet at a certain place. David and the Holy Bread

I have made an appointment^[b] with the young men for such and such a place. ² And David said unto Ahimelech the priest - The king, hath charged me with a matter, and hath said unto me - Let, no man, know aught of the business on which I am sending thee, and with which I have charged thee, - But, unto the young men, have I appointed, such and such a place.² And David said to Achimelech, the priest: The king hath commanded me a business, and said: Let no man know the thing for which thou art sent by me, and what manner of commands I have given thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.² And David said to Ahim'elech the priest, "The king has charged me with a matter, and said to me, 'Let no one know anything of the matter about which I send you, and with which I have charged you.' I have made an appointment with the young men for such and such a place.² And David says to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commanded me [on] a matter, and he says to me, Let no man know anything of the matter about which I send you, and which I have commanded you; and [my] young men know [to go] to such and such a place.^2-3 David answered Ahimelech the Priest, "The king sent me on a mission and gave strict orders: ‘This is top secret—not a word of this to a soul.' I've arranged to meet up with my men in a certain place. Now, what's there here to eat? Do you have five loaves of bread? Give me whatever you can scrounge up!"² David said to Ahimelech the priest, "The king has commissioned me with a matter and has said to me, '^(C1)Let no one know anything about the matter on which I am sending you and with which I have commissioned you; and I have directed the young men to a certain place.'³ Now what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread or whatever can be found.”

³ Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present. ³ Now then, what do you have at hand?^[b] Give me five loaves of bread or whatever is here."^{[c] 3} Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here." ³ Now, what food do you have with you? Give me five loaves of bread or anything you find." ³ Now what do you have at your disposal? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever can be found."³ "Now what food do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever can be found."³ "Now then, what ^(F1)do you have on hand? Give ^(F2)me five loaves of bread, or whatever can be found."³ Nowe therefore if thou hast ought vnder thine hande, giue me fiue cakes of bread, or what commeth to hand.³ "So now, what ^(F1)do you have on hand? Give five loaves of bread into my hand, or whatever can be found." ³ Do you have any food you can give me? Could you spare five loaves of bread?" ^3 (2) David said to Achimelekh the cohen, "The king has sent me on a mission and told me not to let anyone know its purpose or what I've been ordered to do. I've arranged a place where the guards are to meet me.

³ And now what is under thy hand? give me five loaves in my hand, or what may be found. ³ Now, what food do you have with you? Give me five loaves of bread or whatever you have to eat."³ Now therefore what provisions have you in your possession? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatever can be found. ³ Now, then, what supplies do you have? Give me five loaves of bread or anything else you have."³ And now, what is there under your hand? Give five loaves into my hand, or whatever is found.³ Yf thou haue now ought vnder thy hande, a loafe of bred or fyue, geue me the same in my hande, or what so euer thou findest. ³ Now therefore what is under thy hand? give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or whatsoever there is present. ³ So now, if you have here five cakes of bread, give them into my hand, or whatever you have.³ Nowe therfore if thou hast ought vnder thyne hand, geue me fyue loaues of bread, or what commeth to hande.³ And David said unto Ahimelech the priest: 'The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me: Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee; and the young men have I appointed to such and such a place.³ Now therefore what is vnder thine hand? giue me fiue loaues of bread in mine hand, or what there is present. ³ And now if there are under thy hand five loaves, give into my hand what is ready. ³ Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or whatsoever there is present. ³ Now then, what do you have on hand? Give ^(F2)me five loaves of bread, or whatever can be found."

⁴ The priest told him, “There is no ordinary bread on hand. However, there is consecrated bread,^(C1) but the young men may eat it^(F1) only if they have kept themselves from women.”^(C2)

⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women. ⁴ The priest answered David and said, "There is no ordinary bread here at hand;^[d] there is only holy bread, but only if the young men have kept themselves from women." ⁴ And the priest answered David, "I have no common bread on hand, but there is ^(d)holy bread—^(e)if the young men have kept themselves from women."

⁴ The priest said to David, "I don't have any plain bread here, but I do have some holy bread.^[a] You may eat it if your men have kept themselves from women."

⁴ The priest replied to David, "I don't have any ordinary bread at my disposal. Only holy bread is available, and then only if your soldiers have abstained from sexual relations with women." ⁴ The priest answered David, "There is no ordinary (unconsecrated) bread on hand, but there is ^(F1)(C1)consecrated bread; you may have it if only the young men have ^(C2)kept themselves from women."⁴ The priest answered David and said, "There is no ordinary bread ^(F1)on hand, but there is ^(C1)consecrated bread, if only the young men have ^(C2)kept themselves from women."⁴ And the Priest answered Dauid, and saide, There is no common bread vnder mine hande, but here is halowed bread, if the yong men haue kept themselues, at least from women.⁴ And the priest answered David and said, "There is no ordinary bread ^(F1)on hand, but there is ^(C1)consecrated bread; if only the young men have ^(C2)kept themselves from women."

⁴ "The only bread I have is the sacred bread," the priest told David. "You can have it if your soldiers didn't sleep with women last night."^{[a] 4 (3)} Now, what do you have on hand? If you can spare five loaves of bread, give them to me, or whatever there is."

⁴ And the priest answered David and said, There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.

⁴ The priest said to David, "I don't have any ordinary bread here, but I do have some of the holy bread. Your officers can eat it if they have not had sexual relations with any women."^[b]4 And the priest answered David and said to him, There is no common bread in my possession, but there is hallowed bread; you may have it if the young men have kept themselves from touching unclean things.

⁴ The priest said, "I don't have any ordinary bread, only sacred bread; you can have it if your men haven't had sexual relations recently."⁴ And the priest answered David and said, There is no common bread under my hand, but only holy bread, if the young men have only been kept from a woman.⁴ The prest answered Dauid, and sayde: I haue no comen bred vnder my hande, but the holy bred, yf the yonge men haue onely refrained them selues from wemen. ⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women. ⁴ And the priest, answering David, said, I have no common bread here but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.⁴ And the priest aunswered Dauid, and sayd: There is no common bread vnder myne hand, but here is halowed bread: if the young me haue kept them selues, specially from women.⁴ Now therefore what is under thy hand? five loaves of bread? give them in my hand, or whatsoever there is present.'⁴ And the Priest answered Dauid, and said, There is no common bread vnder mine hand, but there is hallowed bread: if the young men haue kept themselues at least from women. ⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, There are no common loaves under my hand, for I have none but holy loaves: if the young men have been kept at least from women, then they shall eat them. ⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women. ⁴ “There is no common bread on hand,” the priest replied, “but there is some consecrated bread—provided that the young men have kept themselves from women.”⁴ And the preest answeride to Dauid, and seide to hym, Y haue `not lewid, `that is, comyn, looues at hoond, but oneli hooli breed; whether the children ben clene, and moost of wymmen?⁴ And the priest answereth David, and saith, `There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if the youths have been kept only from women.'⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, [There is] no common bread under my hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.⁴ The priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women. ⁴ And the priest answered David and said, "There is no common bread on hand; but there is holy bread, if the young men have at least kept themselves from women."

⁴ "We don't have any regular bread," the priest replied. "But there is the holy bread, which you can have if your young men have not slept with any women recently." ⁴ The religious leader answered David, "I only have bread which has been set apart as holy, if only the young men have kept themselves from women." ⁴ The priest answered David, "I have no ordinary bread at hand, only holy bread—provided that the young men have kept themselves from women." ⁴ And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under my hand, - but, hallowed bread, there is, if the young men have kept themselves, at least from women.⁴ And the priest answered David, saying: I have no common bread at hand, but only holy bread, if the young men be clean, especially from women?⁴ And the priest answered David, "I have no common bread at hand, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women."⁴ And the priest answers David and says, "There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if only the youths have been kept from women."

⁴ "I don't have any regular bread on hand," said the priest. "I only have holy bread. If your men have not slept with women recently, it's yours."⁴ The priest answered David and said, "There is no ordinary bread ^(F1)on hand, but there is ^(C1)consecrated bread; if only the young men have ^(C2)kept themselves from women."

⁵ David answered him, “I swear that women are being kept from us, as always when I go out to battle.^(C1) The young men’s bodies^(F1) are consecrated^(C2) even on an ordinary mission, so of course their bodies are consecrated today.” ⁵ David answered the Kohen, and said to him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days; when I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was but a common journey; how much more then today shall their vessels be holy?

⁵ And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel. ⁵ David answered the priest and said to him, "Indeed, women were held back from us as it has been when I've gone out before.^[e] And the things^[f] of the young men are holy when^[g] it is an ordinary journey. How much more^[h] today^[i] will the things^[j] be holy?" ⁵ And David answered the priest, "Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?"

⁵ David answered, "No women have been near us for days. My men always keep themselves holy, even when we do ordinary work. And this is especially true when the work is holy." ⁵ David said to the priest, "Certainly women have been kept away from us, just as on previous occasions when I have set out. The soldiers' equipment is holy, even on an ordinary journey. How much more so will they be holy today, along with their equipment!"⁵ David answered the priest, "^(C1)Be assured that ^(F1)women have been kept from us in these three days since I set out, and the ^(F2)(C2)bodies of the young men were consecrated (ceremonially clean), although it was an ordinary (unconsecrated) journey; so how much more will their vessels be holy today?"⁵ David answered the priest and said to him, "^(C1)Be assured, women have been denied to us as previously when I left and the ^(F1)(C2)bodies of the young men were consecrated, though it was an ordinary journey; how much more then will ^(F2)their bodies be consecrated today?"⁵ Dauid then answered the Priest, and sayde vnto him, Certainely women haue bene separarate fro vs these two or three dayes since I came out: and the vessels of the yong men were holy, though the way were prophane, & how much more then shall euery one be sanctified this day in the vessell?⁵ And David answered the priest and said to him, "^(C1)Surely women have been kept from us as previously when I set out and the ^(C2)vessels of the young men were holy, though it was an ordinary journey; how much more then today will ^(F1)their vessels be holy?"

⁵ "Of course we didn't sleep with women," David answered. "I never let my men do that when we're on a mission. They have to be acceptable to worship God even when we're on a regular mission, and today we're on a special mission." ^5 (4) The cohen answered David, "I don't have any regular bread; however, there is consecrated bread — but only if the guards have abstained from women.

⁵ And David answered the priest and said to him, Yes indeed, women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the [bread] is in a manner common, and the more so, because to-day [new] is hallowed in the vessels.

⁵ David answered the priest, "We have not been with any women. My men keep their bodies^[c] holy every time we go out to fight, even on ordinary missions.^[d] And this is especially true today."⁵ And David answered the priest and said to him, The hallowed bread has been lawful for us since yesterday and the day before, when we left, and behold, the clothes of the young men are holy, and the bread is now practically common, even though it were sanctified this day in the vessels.

⁵ "Of course they haven't," answered David. "My men always keep themselves ritually pure even when we go out on an ordinary mission; how much more this time when we are on a special mission!"⁵ And David answered the priest and said to him, Surely, a woman has been kept from us as yesterday and the third day , since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy. Andcommon; also surely today it is sanctified in the vessels.⁵ Dauid answered the prest, and sayde vnto him: The wemen were kepte thre dayes from vs whan we departed forth, and the yonge mens vessels were holy. But this waye is vnholy, neuerthelesse it shalbe santifyed to daye in the instrumentes. ⁵ And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days; when I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, ^[a]though it was but a common journey; how much more then to-day shall their vessels be holy? ⁵ And David in answer said to the priest, Certainly women have been kept from us; and as has been done before when I have gone out the arms of the young men were made holy, even though it was a common journey; how much more today will their arms be made holy.⁵ Dauid aunswered the priest, and sayd vnto him: Of a trueth, women hath ben separated fro vs this two or three days since I came out, & the vessels of the young men were holy: Howebeit, this way is vnpure, and howe muche more shall there be holines in the vessell?⁵ And the priest answered David, and said: 'There is no common bread under my hand, but there is holy bread; if only the young men have kept themselves from women.' ⁵ And Dauid answered the Priest, and said vnto him, Of a trueth women haue beene kept from vs about these three dayes, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessell. ⁵ And David answered the priest, and said to him, Yea, we have been kept from women for three days: when I came forth for the journey all the young men were purified; but this expedition is unclean, wherefore it shall be sanctified this day because of my weapons. ⁵ And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days; When I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was but a common journey; how much more then today shall their vessels be holy? ⁵ David answered, “Women have indeed been kept from us, as usual when I set out. And the equipment of the young men is holy, as it is even on common missions, and all the more at this time.”⁵ And Dauid answeride to the preest, and seide to hym, And sotheli if it is doon of wymmen, we absteyneden vs fro yistirdai and the thridde dai ago, whanne we yeden out, and the `vessels, that is, bodies, of the children weren cleene; forsothe this weie is defoulyd, but also that schal be halewid to dai in the vessels.<sup>5</sup> And David answereth the priest, and saith to him, `Surely, if women have been restrained from us as heretofore in my going out, then the vessels of the young men are holy, and it [is] a common way: and also, surely to-day it is sanctified in the vessel.'⁵ And David answered the priest, and said to him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days; when I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was but a common journey; how much more then today shall their vessels be holy?⁵ And David answered the priest, and said to him, Of a truth women [have been] kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and [the bread is] in a manner common, yes, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.⁵ David answered the priest, and said to him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days; when I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was but a common journey; how much more then today shall their vessels be holy? ⁵ Then David answered the priest, and said to him, "Truly, women have been kept from us about three days since I came out. And the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in effect common, even though it was consecrated in the vessel this day."

⁵ "Don't worry," David replied. "I never allow my men to be with women when we are on a campaign. And since they stay clean even on ordinary trips, how much more on this one!" ⁵ And David told the religious leader, "For sure women have been kept from us while we have traveled. The bodies of the young men are holy even on everyday trips. How much more they are today!" ⁵ David answered the priest, "Indeed women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition; the vessels of the young men are holy even when it is a common journey; how much more today will their vessels be holy?" ⁵ And David answered the priest and said to him - Of a truth, women, have been withheld from us, of late, through my coming out, and the wallets of the young men have become hallowed, - while the bread , itself, is in a manner common, and the more so since, to-day, there are other loaves to be hallowed, in the vessel.⁵ And David answered the priest, and said to him: Truly, as to what concerneth women, we have refrained ourselves from yesterday and the day before, when we came out, and the vessels of the young men were holy. Now this way is defiled, but it shall also be sanctified this day in the vessels.⁵ And David answered the priest, "Of a truth women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition; the vessels of the young men are holy, even when it is a common journey; how much more today will their vessels be holy?"⁵ And David answers the priest and says to him, "Surely, if women have been restrained from us as before in my going out, then the vessels of the young men are holy, and it [is] a common way; and also, surely it is sanctified today in the vessel."

⁵ David said, "None of us has touched a woman. I always do it this way when I'm on a mission: My men abstain from sex. Even when it is an ordinary mission we do that—how much more on this holy mission."⁵ David answered the priest and said to him, "^(C1)Surely women have been kept from us as previously when I set out and the ^(C2)vessels of the young men were holy, though it was an ordinary journey; how much more then today will ^(F1)their vessels be holy?"⁶ So the priest gave him the consecrated bread,^(C1) for there was no bread there except the Bread of the Presence^(C2) that had been removed from the presence of the Lord. When the bread was removed, it had been replaced with warm bread.

⁶ So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the Lord, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away. ⁶ So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence, which was removed from before Yahweh, in order to set hot bread there on the day when it was taken away. ⁶ So the priest gave him ^(f)the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, ^(g)which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.

⁶ So the priest gave David the holy bread from the presence of God because there was no other. Each day the holy bread was replaced with hot bread.

⁶ So the priest gave him holy bread, for there was no bread there other than the bread of the Presence. It had been removed from before the Lord in order to replace it with hot bread on the day it had been taken away. ⁶ So ^(C1)the priest gave him the consecrated bread; for there was no bread there except the ^(C2)bread of the ^(F1)Presence which was removed from before the LORD in order to put hot bread in its place when it was taken away.

⁶ The only bread the priest had was the sacred bread that he had taken from the place of worship after putting out the fresh loaves. So he gave it to David. ^6 (5) David answered the cohen, "Of course women have been kept away from us, as on previous campaigns. Whenever I go out on campaign, the men's gear is clean, even if it's an ordinary trip. How much more, then, today, when they will be putting something consecrated in their packs!"

⁶ And the priest gave him holy [bread]; for there was no bread there but the shew-loaves that were taken from before Jehovah, to put on hot bread in the day when they were taken away.

⁶ There was no bread except the holy bread, so the priest gave David this bread. This was the bread that the priests put on the holy table before the Lord. Each day they took this bread away and put fresh bread in its place.⁶ So the priest gave him hallowed bread; for there was no bread there but the shewbread that was taken from before the LORD to be replaced by hot bread on the day when it was taken away.

^6 (b)So the priest gave David the sacred bread, because the only bread he had was the loaves offered to God, which had been removed from the sacred table and replaced by fresh bread.⁶ And the priest gave the holy bread to him, for there was no bread there except the Bread of the Presence which is taken from the presence of Jehovah in order to put hot bread in on the day it is taken away.⁶ Then the prest gaue him of ye holy, in so moch as there was none other bred but the shewbredes, which were taken vp before the LORDE, that there might be other freshbredes set therin the daye wha he toke them awaye. ⁶ So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before Jehovah, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.⁶ So the priest gave him the holy bread: there was no other, only the holy bread which had been taken from before the Lord, so that new bread might be put in its place on the day when it was taken away.⁶ And so the priest gaue him halowed bread: for there was none other bread there, saue the shew bread that was taken from before the Lord, to put freshe bread there the day that it was taken away.⁶ And David answered the priest, and said unto him: 'Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days; when I came out, the vessels of the young men were holy, though it was but a common journey; how much more then to-day, when there shall be holy bread in their vessels?'⁶ So the Priest gaue him hallowed bread; for there was no bread there, but the Shewbread that was taken from before the Lord, to put hote bread in the day when it was taken away. ⁶ So Abimelech the priest gave him the shewbread; for there were no loaves there, but only the presence loaves which had been removed from the presence of the Lord, in order that hot bread should be set on, on the day on which he took them. ⁶ So the priest gave him holy [bread]: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away. ⁶ So the priest gave him the consecrated bread, since there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which had been removed from before the LORD and replaced with hot bread on the day it was taken away.⁶ Therfor the preest yaf to hym halewid breed, for noon other breed was there, no but oneli looues of settyng forth, that weren takun awey fro the face of the Lord, that hoote looues schulen be set.⁶ And the priest giveth to him the holy thing, for there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence which is turned aside from the presence of Jehovah to put hot bread in the day of its being taken away.⁶ So the priest gave him holy [bread]; for there was no bread there but the showbread, that was taken from before Yahweh, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.⁶ So the priest gave him hallowed [bread]: for there was no bread there but the show-bread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.⁶ So the priest gave him holy [bread]; for there was no bread there but the show bread, that was taken from before Yahweh, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away. ⁶ So the priest gave him holy bread; for there was no bread there but the showbread which had been taken from before the LORD, in order to put hot bread in its place on the day when it was taken away.

⁶ Since there was no other food available, the priest gave him the holy bread—the Bread of the Presence that was placed before the Lord in the Tabernacle. It had just been replaced that day with fresh bread. ⁶ So the religious leader gave him holy bread. For there was no bread there but the bread before the Lord. It was taken from before the Lord, so hot bread could be put in its place. ⁶ So the priest gave him the holy bread; for there was no bread there except the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.⁶ So the priest gave him hallowed bread , - because there was there no bread, save the Presence-Bread, which had to be removed from before Yahweh, to put hot bread, on the day when it should be taken away.⁶ The priest therefore gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there, but only the loaves of proposition, which had been taken away from before the face of the Lord, that hot loaves might be set up.⁶ So the priest gave him the holy bread; for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the LORD, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.⁶ And the priest gives the holy thing to him, for there was no bread there except the Bread of the Presentation, which is turned aside from the presence of YHWH to put hot bread [there] in the day of its being taken away.

⁶ So the priest gave them the holy bread. It was the only bread he had, Bread of the Presence that had been removed from God's presence and replaced by fresh bread at the same time.
