Cross-References
"The Lord is God of gods! The Lord is God of gods! God knows, and we want you to know also. If we have done something wrong, you may kill us.
"But you must serve me as your father David did; he was fair and sincere. You must obey all I have commanded and keep my laws and rules.
" Lord , please remember that I have always obeyed you. I have given myself completely to you and have done what you said was right." Then Hezekiah cried loudly.
I know, my God, that you test people's hearts. You are happy when people do what is right. I was happy to give all these things, and I gave with an honest heart. Your people gathered here are happy to give to you, and I rejoice to see their giving.
You said, ‘I am pure and without sin; I am innocent and free from guilt.
Lord , judge the people. Lord , defend me because I am right, because I have done no wrong, God Most High.
Only those with clean hands and pure hearts, who have not worshiped idols, who have not made promises in the name of a false god.
My hope is in you, so may goodness and honesty guard me.
I wash my hands to show I am innocent, and I come to your altar, Lord .
So why have I kept my heart pure? Why have I kept my hands from doing wrong?
Gill's Notes on the Bible
Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people,.... The king of them, as the Targum:
thus saith the Lord God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears; :-
behold, I will heal thee; instantly, miraculously; and none but God could heal him, his disease being in its kind mortal, and he had been told from the Lord that he should die:
on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord: the temple, to give thanks for his recovery; and this he should do on the third day from thence; so soon should he be well, which would show the cure to be miraculous.
Barnes' Notes on the Bible
The captain of my people - This phrase (which does not occur elsewhere in Kings) is remarkable, and speaks for the authenticity of this full report of the actual words of the prophet’s message (abbreviated in Isaiah 38:1, etc.). The title, “Captain נגיד nāgı̂yd of God’s people,” commonly used of David, is applied to Hezekiah, as David’s true follower 2 Kings 18:3.
