2 Chronicles 16:1-20:13
Chapter 16
Asa's Last Years(a)(b)
1 In the thirty-sixth year of Asa's reign Baasha(c) king of Israel went up against Judah and fortified Ramah to prevent anyone from leaving or entering the territory of Asa king of Judah.
2 Asa then took the silver and gold out of the treasuries of the Lord 's temple and of his own palace and sent it to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus.(d) 3 "Let there be a treaty(e) between me and you," he said, "as there was between my father and your father. See, I am sending you silver and gold. Now break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he will withdraw from me."
4 Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent the commanders of his forces against the towns of Israel. They conquered Ijon, Dan, Abel Maim[a] and all the store cities of Naphtali.(f) 5 When Baasha heard this, he stopped building Ramah and abandoned his work. 6 Then King Asa brought all the men of Judah, and they carried away from Ramah the stones and timber Baasha had been using. With them he built up Geba and Mizpah.(g)
7 At that time Hanani(h) the seer came to Asa king of Judah and said to him: "Because you relied(i) on the king of Aram and not on the Lord your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your hand. 8 Were not the Cushites[b](j) and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers(k) of chariots and horsemen[c]? Yet when you relied on the Lord , he delivered(l) them into your hand. 9 For the eyes(m) of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish(n) thing, and from now on you will be at war.(o)"
10 Asa was angry with the seer because of this; he was so enraged that he put him in prison.(p) At the same time Asa brutally oppressed some of the people.
11 The events of Asa's reign, from beginning to end, are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. 12 In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted(q) with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek(r) help from the Lord ,(s) but only from the physicians. 13 Then in the forty-first year of his reign Asa died and rested with his ancestors. 14 They buried him in the tomb that he had cut out for himself(t) in the City of David. They laid him on a bier covered with spices and various blended perfumes,(u) and they made a huge fire(v) in his honor.
Chapter 17
Jehoshaphat King of Judah
1 Jehoshaphat his son succeeded him as king and strengthened(a) himself against Israel. 2 He stationed troops in all the fortified cities(b) of Judah and put garrisons in Judah and in the towns of Ephraim that his father Asa had captured.(c)
3 The Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed the ways of his father David(d) before him. He did not consult the Baals 4 but sought(e) the God of his father and followed his commands rather than the practices of Israel. 5 The Lord established the kingdom under his control; and all Judah brought gifts(f) to Jehoshaphat, so that he had great wealth and honor.(g) 6 His heart was devoted(h) to the ways of the Lord ; furthermore, he removed the high places(i) and the Asherah poles(j) from Judah.(k)
7 In the third year of his reign he sent his officials Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel and Micaiah to teach(l) in the towns of Judah. 8 With them were certain Levites(m)—Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah and Tob-Adonijah—and the priests Elishama and Jehoram. 9 They taught throughout Judah, taking with them the Book of the Law(n) of the Lord ; they went around to all the towns of Judah and taught the people.
10 The fear(o) of the Lord fell on all the kingdoms of the lands surrounding Judah, so that they did not go to war against Jehoshaphat. 11 Some Philistines brought Jehoshaphat gifts and silver as tribute, and the Arabs(p) brought him flocks:(q) seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred goats.
12 Jehoshaphat became more and more powerful; he built forts and store cities in Judah 13 and had large supplies in the towns of Judah. He also kept experienced fighting men in Jerusalem. 14 Their enrollment(r) by families was as follows:
From Judah, commanders of units of 1,000:
Adnah the commander, with 300,000 fighting men;
15 next, Jehohanan the commander, with 280,000;
16 next, Amasiah son of Zikri, who volunteered(s) himself for the service of the Lord , with 200,000.
17 From Benjamin:(t)
Eliada, a valiant soldier, with 200,000 men armed with bows and shields;
18 next, Jehozabad, with 180,000 men armed for battle.
19 These were the men who served the king, besides those he stationed in the fortified cities(u) throughout Judah.(v)
Chapter 18
Micaiah Prophesies Against Ahab(a)
1 Now Jehoshaphat had great wealth and honor,(b) and he allied(c) himself with Ahab(d) by marriage. 2 Some years later he went down to see Ahab in Samaria. Ahab slaughtered many sheep and cattle for him and the people with him and urged him to attack Ramoth Gilead. 3 Ahab king of Israel asked Jehoshaphat king of Judah, "Will you go with me against Ramoth Gilead?"
Jehoshaphat replied, "I am as you are, and my people as your people; we will join you in the war." 4 But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, "First seek the counsel of the Lord ."
5 So the king of Israel brought together the prophets—four hundred men—and asked them, "Shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I not?"
"Go," they answered, "for God will give it into the king's hand."
6 But Jehoshaphat asked, "Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord here whom we can inquire of?"
7 The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, "There is still one prophet through whom we can inquire of the Lord , but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah."
"The king should not say such a thing," Jehoshaphat replied.
8 So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, "Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once."
9 Dressed in their royal robes, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor by the entrance of the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them. 10 Now Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had made iron horns, and he declared, "This is what the Lord says: ‘With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed.'"
11 All the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. "Attack Ramoth Gilead(e) and be victorious," they said, "for the Lord will give it into the king's hand."
12 The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, "Look, the other prophets without exception are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably."
13 But Micaiah said, "As surely as the Lord lives, I can tell him only what my God says."(f)
14 When he arrived, the king asked him, "Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I not?"
"Attack and be victorious," he answered, "for they will be given into your hand."
15 The king said to him, "How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the Lord ?"
16 Then Micaiah answered, "I saw all Israel(g) scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd,(h) and the Lord said, ‘These people have no master. Let each one go home in peace.'"
17 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Didn't I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?"
18 Micaiah continued, "Therefore hear the word of the Lord : I saw the Lord sitting on his throne(i) with all the multitudes of heaven standing on his right and on his left. 19 And the Lord said, ‘Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?'
"One suggested this, and another that. 20 Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the Lord and said, ‘I will entice him.'
"‘By what means?' the Lord asked.
21 "‘I will go and be a deceiving spirit(j) in the mouths of all his prophets,' he said.
"‘You will succeed in enticing him,' said the Lord . ‘Go and do it.'
22 "So now the Lord has put a deceiving spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours.(k) The Lord has decreed disaster for you."
23 Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped(l) Micaiah in the face. "Which way did the spirit from[a] the Lord go when he went from me to speak to you?" he asked.
24 Micaiah replied, "You will find out on the day you go to hide in an inner room."
25 The king of Israel then ordered, "Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon the ruler of the city and to Joash the king's son, 26 and say, ‘This is what the king says: Put this fellow in prison(m) and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely.'"
27 Micaiah declared, "If you ever return safely, the Lord has not spoken through me." Then he added, "Mark my words, all you people!"
Ahab Killed at Ramoth Gilead(n)
28 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead. 29 The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "I will enter the battle in disguise, but you wear your royal robes." So the king of Israel disguised(o) himself and went into battle.
30 Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders, "Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel." 31 When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, "This is the king of Israel." So they turned to attack him, but Jehoshaphat cried out,(p) and the Lord helped him. God drew them away from him, 32 for when the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they stopped pursuing him.
33 But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the breastplate and the scale armor. The king told the chariot driver, "Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I've been wounded." 34 All day long the battle raged, and the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. Then at sunset he died.(q)
Chapter 19
1 When Jehoshaphat king of Judah returned safely to his palace in Jerusalem, 2 Jehu(a) the seer, the son of Hanani, went out to meet him and said to the king, "Should you help the wicked(b) and love[a] those who hate the Lord ?(c) Because of this, the wrath(d) of the Lord is on you. 3 There is, however, some good(e) in you, for you have rid the land of the Asherah poles(f) and have set your heart on seeking God.(g)"
Jehoshaphat Appoints Judges
4 Jehoshaphat lived in Jerusalem, and he went out again among the people from Beersheba to the hill country of Ephraim and turned them back to the Lord , the God of their ancestors. 5 He appointed judges(h) in the land, in each of the fortified cities of Judah. 6 He told them, "Consider carefully what you do,(i) because you are not judging for mere mortals(j) but for the Lord , who is with you whenever you give a verdict. 7 Now let the fear of the Lord be on you. Judge carefully, for with the Lord our God there is no injustice(k) or partiality(l) or bribery."
8 In Jerusalem also, Jehoshaphat appointed some of the Levites,(m) priests(n) and heads of Israelite families to administer(o) the law of the Lord and to settle disputes. And they lived in Jerusalem. 9 He gave them these orders: "You must serve faithfully and wholeheartedly in the fear of the Lord . 10 In every case that comes before you from your people who live in the cities—whether bloodshed or other concerns of the law, commands, decrees or regulations—you are to warn them not to sin against the Lord ;(p) otherwise his wrath will come on you and your people. Do this, and you will not sin.
11 "Amariah the chief priest will be over you in any matter concerning the Lord , and Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader of the tribe of Judah, will be over you in any matter concerning the king, and the Levites will serve as officials before you. Act with courage,(q) and may the Lord be with those who do well."
Chapter 20
Jehoshaphat Defeats Moab and Ammon
1 After this, the Moabites(a) and Ammonites with some of the Meunites[a](b) came to wage war against Jehoshaphat.
2 Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, "A vast army(c) is coming against you from Edom,[b] from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar(d)" (that is, En Gedi).(e) 3 Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord , and he proclaimed a fast(f) for all Judah. 4 The people of Judah(g) came together to seek help from the Lord ; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.
5 Then Jehoshaphat stood up in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem at the temple of the Lord in the front of the new courtyard 6 and said:
" Lord , the God of our ancestors,(h) are you not the God who is in heaven?(i) You rule over all the kingdoms(j) of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you.(k) 7 Our God, did you not drive out the inhabitants of this land(l) before your people Israel and give it forever to the descendants of Abraham your friend?(m) 8 They have lived in it and have built in it a sanctuary(n) for your Name, saying, 9 ‘If calamity comes upon us, whether the sword of judgment, or plague or famine,(o) we will stand in your presence before this temple that bears your Name and will cry out to you in our distress, and you will hear us and save us.'
10 "But now here are men from Ammon, Moab and Mount Seir, whose territory you would not allow Israel to invade when they came from Egypt;(p) so they turned away from them and did not destroy them. 11 See how they are repaying us by coming to drive us out of the possession(q) you gave us as an inheritance. 12 Our God, will you not judge them?(r) For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.(s)"
13 All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the Lord .
