1 Chronicles 5-6

Chapter 5

1 The sons of Reuben(a) the firstborn of Israel (he was the firstborn, but when he defiled his father's marriage bed,(b) his rights as firstborn were given to the sons of Joseph(c) son of Israel;(d) so he could not be listed in the genealogical record in accordance with his birthright,(e) 2 and though Judah(f) was the strongest of his brothers and a ruler(g) came from him, the rights of the firstborn(h) belonged to Joseph)— 3 the sons of Reuben(i) the firstborn of Israel:

Hanok, Pallu,(j) Hezron(k) and Karmi.

4 The descendants of Joel:

Shemaiah his son, Gog his son,

Shimei his son, 5 Micah his son,

Reaiah his son, Baal his son,

6 and Beerah his son, whom Tiglath-Pileser[a](l) king of Assyria took into exile. Beerah was a leader of the Reubenites.

7 Their relatives by clans,(m) listed according to their genealogical records:

Jeiel the chief, Zechariah, 8 and Bela son of Azaz, the son of Shema, the son of Joel. They settled in the area from Aroer(n) to Nebo(o) and Baal Meon.(p) 9 To the east they occupied the land up to the edge of the desert that extends to the Euphrates(q) River, because their livestock had increased in Gilead.(r)

10 During Saul's reign they waged war against the Hagrites(s), who were defeated at their hands; they occupied the dwellings of the Hagrites throughout the entire region east of Gilead.

11 The Gadites(t) lived next to them in Bashan, as far as Salekah:(u)

12 Joel was the chief, Shapham the second, then Janai and Shaphat, in Bashan.

13 Their relatives, by families, were:

Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jakan, Zia and Eber—seven in all.

14 These were the sons of Abihail son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshishai, the son of Jahdo, the son of Buz.

15 Ahi son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, was head of their family.

16 The Gadites lived in Gilead, in Bashan and its outlying villages, and on all the pasturelands of Sharon as far as they extended.

17 All these were entered in the genealogical records during the reigns of Jotham(v) king of Judah and Jeroboam(w) king of Israel.

18 The Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh had 44,760 men ready for military service(x)—able-bodied men who could handle shield and sword, who could use a bow, and who were trained for battle. 19 They waged war against the Hagrites, Jetur,(y) Naphish and Nodab. 20 They were helped(z) in fighting them, and God delivered the Hagrites and all their allies into their hands, because they cried(aa) out to him during the battle. He answered their prayers, because they trusted(ab) in him. 21 They seized the livestock of the Hagrites—fifty thousand camels, two hundred fifty thousand sheep and two thousand donkeys. They also took one hundred thousand people captive, 22 and many others fell slain, because the battle(ac) was God's. And they occupied the land until the exile.(ad)

The Half-Tribe of Manasseh

23 The people of the half-tribe of Manasseh(ae) were numerous; they settled in the land from Bashan to Baal Hermon, that is, to Senir (Mount Hermon).(af)

24 These were the heads of their families: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah and Jahdiel. They were brave warriors, famous men, and heads of their families. 25 But they were unfaithful(ag) to the God of their ancestors and prostituted(ah) themselves to the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. 26 So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit(ai) of Pul(aj) king of Assyria (that is, Tiglath-Pileser(ak) king of Assyria), who took the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh into exile. He took them to Halah,(al) Habor, Hara and the river of Gozan, where they are to this day.

33 Here are the men who served, together with their sons:

From the Kohathites:

48 Their fellow Levites(ai) were assigned to all the other duties of the tabernacle, the house of God. 49 But Aaron and his descendants were the ones who presented offerings on the altar(aj) of burnt offering and on the altar of incense(ak) in connection with all that was done in the Most Holy Place, making atonement for Israel, in accordance with all that Moses the servant of God had commanded.

50 These were the descendants of Aaron:

55 They were given Hebron in Judah with its surrounding pasturelands. 56 But the fields and villages around the city were given to Caleb son of Jephunneh.(an)

Zephaniah 2

Chapter 2

Judah and Jerusalem Judged Along With the Nations

Judah Summoned to Repent

1 Gather together,(a) gather yourselves together,
     you shameful(b) nation,
2 before the decree takes effect
and that day passes like windblown chaff,(c)
before the Lord 's fierce anger(d)
     comes upon you,
before the day of the Lord 's wrath(e)
     comes upon you.
3 Seek(f) the Lord , all you humble of the land,
you who do what he commands.
Seek righteousness,(g) seek humility;(h)
     perhaps you will be sheltered(i)
on the day of the Lord 's anger.

4 Gaza(j) will be abandoned
     and Ashkelon(k) left in ruins.
At midday Ashdod will be emptied
     and Ekron uprooted.
5 Woe to you who live by the sea,
     you Kerethite(l) people;
the word of the Lord is against you,(m)
     Canaan, land of the Philistines.
He says, "I will destroy you,
     and none will be left."(n)
6 The land by the sea will become pastures
     having wells for shepherds
     and pens for flocks.(o)
7 That land will belong
     to the remnant(p) of the people of Judah;
     there they will find pasture.
In the evening they will lie down
     in the houses of Ashkelon.
The Lord their God will care for them;
     he will restore their fortunes.[a](q)

Moab and Ammon

8 "I have heard the insults(r) of Moab(s)
and the taunts of the Ammonites,(t)
who insulted(u) my people
and made threats against their land.(v)
9 Therefore, as surely as I live,"
     declares the Lord Almighty,
     the God of Israel,
"surely Moab(w) will become like Sodom,(x)
     the Ammonites(y) like Gomorrah—
a place of weeds and salt pits,
     a wasteland forever.
The remnant of my people will plunder(z) them;
the survivors(aa) of my nation will inherit their land.(ab)"

10 This is what they will get in return for their pride,(ac)
     for insulting(ad) and mocking
the people of the Lord Almighty.(ae)
11 The Lord will be awesome(af) to them
when he destroys all the gods(ag) of the earth.(ah)
Distant nations will bow down to him,(ai)
all of them in their own lands.

12 "You Cushites,[b](aj) too,
will be slain by my sword.(ak)"

13 He will stretch out his hand against the north
     and destroy Assyria,(al)
leaving Nineveh(am) utterly desolate
     and dry as the desert.(an)
14 Flocks and herds(ao) will lie down there,
     creatures of every kind.
The desert owl(ap) and the screech owl(aq)
     will roost on her columns.
Their hooting will echo through the windows,
     rubble will fill the doorways,
the beams of cedar will be exposed.
15 This is the city of revelry(ar)
     that lived in safety.(as)
She said to herself,
"I am the one! And there is none besides me."(at)
What a ruin she has become,
     a lair for wild beasts!(au)
All who pass by her scoff(av)
     and shake their fists.(aw)

John 1:1-18

Chapter 1

The Word Became Flesh

1 In the beginning was the Word,(a) and the Word was with God,(b) and the Word was God.(c) 2 He was with God in the beginning.(d) 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.(e) 4 In him was life,(f) and that life was the light(g) of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness,(h) and the darkness has not overcome[a] it.(i)

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John.(j) 7 He came as a witness to testify(k) concerning that light, so that through him all might believe.(l) 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light(m) that gives light to everyone(n) was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him,(o) the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.(p) 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed(q) in his name,(r) he gave the right to become children of God(s) 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.(t)

14 The Word became flesh(u) and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,(v) the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace(w) and truth.(x)

15 (John testified(y) concerning him. He cried out, saying, "This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.'")(z) 16 Out of his fullness(aa) we have all received grace(ab) in place of grace already given. 17 For the law was given through Moses;(ac) grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.(ad) 18 No one has ever seen God,(ae) but the one and only Son, who is himself God and[b](af) is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.
