Psalms 139,140,141

Psalm 139

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

1 You have searched me,(a) Lord ,
     and you know(b) me.
2 You know when I sit and when I rise;(c)
     you perceive my thoughts(d) from afar.
3 You discern my going out(e) and my lying down;
     you are familiar with all my ways.(f)
4 Before a word is on my tongue
     you, Lord , know it completely.(g)
5 You hem me in(h) behind and before,
     and you lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,(i)
     too lofty(j) for me to attain.

7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
     Where can I flee(k) from your presence?
8 If I go up to the heavens,(l) you are there;
     if I make my bed(m) in the depths, you are there.
9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
     if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,(n)
     your right hand(o) will hold me fast.
11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
     and the light become night around me,"
12 even the darkness will not be dark(p) to you;
     the night will shine like the day,
     for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;(q)
     you knit me together(r) in my mother's womb.(s)
14 I praise you(t) because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
     your works are wonderful,(u)
     I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you
     when I was made(v) in the secret place,
     when I was woven together(w) in the depths of the earth.(x)
16 Your eyes saw my unformed body;
     all the days ordained(y) for me were written in your book
     before one of them came to be.
17 How precious to me are your thoughts,[a](z) God!(aa)
     How vast is the sum of them!
18 Were I to count them,(ab)
     they would outnumber the grains of sand(ac)
     when I awake,(ad) I am still with you.

19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked!(ae)
     Away from me,(af) you who are bloodthirsty!(ag)
20 They speak of you with evil intent;
     your adversaries(ah) misuse your name.(ai)
21 Do I not hate those(aj) who hate you, Lord ,
     and abhor(ak) those who are in rebellion against you?
22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
     I count them my enemies.(al)
23 Search me,(am) God, and know my heart;(an)
     test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way(ao) in me,
     and lead me(ap) in the way everlasting.

Psalm 140[a]

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

1 Rescue me,(a) Lord , from evildoers;
     protect me from the violent,(b)
2 who devise evil plans(c) in their hearts
     and stir up war(d) every day.
3 They make their tongues as sharp as(e) a serpent's;
     the poison of vipers(f) is on their lips.[b]

4 Keep me safe,(g) Lord , from the hands of the wicked;(h)
     protect me from the violent,
     who devise ways to trip my feet.
5 The arrogant have hidden a snare(i) for me;
     they have spread out the cords of their net(j)
     and have set traps(k) for me along my path.

6 I say to the Lord , "You are my God."(l)
     Hear, Lord , my cry for mercy.(m)
7 Sovereign Lord ,(n) my strong deliverer,
     you shield my head in the day of battle.
8 Do not grant the wicked(o) their desires, Lord ;
     do not let their plans succeed.

9 Those who surround me proudly rear their heads;
     may the mischief of their lips engulf them.(p)
10 May burning coals fall on them;
     may they be thrown into the fire,(q)
     into miry pits, never to rise.
11 May slanderers not be established in the land;
     may disaster hunt down the violent.(r)

12 I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor(s)
     and upholds the cause(t) of the needy.(u)
13 Surely the righteous will praise your name,(v)
     and the upright will live(w) in your presence.(x)

Psalm 141

A psalm of David.

1 I call to you, Lord , come quickly(a) to me;
     hear me(b) when I call to you.
2 May my prayer be set before you like incense;(c)
     may the lifting up of my hands(d) be like the evening sacrifice.(e)

3 Set a guard over my mouth,(f) Lord ;
     keep watch over the door of my lips.(g)
4 Do not let my heart(h) be drawn to what is evil
     so that I take part in wicked deeds(i)
along with those who are evildoers;
     do not let me eat their delicacies.(j)

5 Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness;
     let him rebuke me(k)—that is oil on my head.(l)
My head will not refuse it,
     for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers.

6 Their rulers will be thrown down from the cliffs,(m)
     and the wicked will learn that my words were well spoken.
7 They will say, "As one plows(n) and breaks up the earth,(o)
     so our bones have been scattered at the mouth(p) of the grave."

8 But my eyes are fixed(q) on you, Sovereign Lord ;
     in you I take refuge(r)—do not give me over to death.
9 Keep me safe(s) from the traps set by evildoers,(t)
     from the snares(u) they have laid for me.
10 Let the wicked fall(v) into their own nets,
     while I pass by in safety.(w)

John 17

Chapter 17

Jesus Prays to Be Glorified

1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven(a) and prayed:

"Father, the hour has come.(b) Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.(c) 2 For you granted him authority over all people(d) that he might give eternal life(e) to all those you have given him.(f) 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you,(g) the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.(h) 4 I have brought you glory(i) on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.(j) 5 And now, Father, glorify me(k) in your presence with the glory I had with you(l) before the world began.(m)

Jesus Prays for His Disciples

6 "I have revealed you[a](n) to those whom you gave me(o) out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me(p) and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you,(q) and they believed that you sent me.(r) 9 I pray for them.(s) I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me,(t) for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine.(u) And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world,(v) and I am coming to you.(w) Holy Father, protect them by the power of[b] your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one(x) as we are one.(y) 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by[c] that name you gave me. None has been lost(z) except the one doomed to destruction(aa) so that Scripture would be fulfilled.(ab)

13 "I am coming to you now,(ac) but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy(ad) within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them,(ae) for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.(af) 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.(ag) 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.(ah) 17 Sanctify them by[d] the truth; your word is truth.(ai) 18 As you sent me into the world,(aj) I have sent them into the world.(ak) 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.(al)

Jesus Prays for All Believers

20 "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one,(am) Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.(an) May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.(ao) 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me,(ap) that they may be one as we are one(aq) 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me(ar) and have loved them(as) even as you have loved me.

24 "Father, I want those you have given me(at) to be with me where I am,(au) and to see my glory,(av) the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.(aw)

25 "Righteous Father, though the world does not know you,(ax) I know you, and they know that you have sent me.(ay) 26 I have made you[e] known to them,(az) and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them(ba) and that I myself may be in them."
