Psalms 109,110,138

Psalm 109

For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.

1 My God, whom I praise,(a)
     do not remain silent,(b)
2 for people who are wicked and deceitful(c)
     have opened their mouths against me;
     they have spoken against me with lying tongues.(d)
3 With words of hatred(e) they surround me;
     they attack me without cause.(f)
4 In return for my friendship they accuse me,
     but I am a man of prayer.(g)
5 They repay me evil for good,(h)
     and hatred for my friendship.

6 Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy;
     let an accuser(i) stand at his right hand.
7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty,(j)
     and may his prayers condemn(k) him.
8 May his days be few;(l)
     may another take his place(m) of leadership.
9 May his children be fatherless
     and his wife a widow.(n)
10 May his children be wandering beggars;(o)
     may they be driven[a] from their ruined homes.
11 May a creditor(p) seize all he has;
     may strangers plunder(q) the fruits of his labor.(r)
12 May no one extend kindness to him
     or take pity(s) on his fatherless children.
13 May his descendants be cut off,(t)
     their names blotted out(u) from the next generation.
14 May the iniquity of his fathers(v) be remembered before the Lord ;
     may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.
15 May their sins always remain before(w) the Lord ,
     that he may blot out their name(x) from the earth.

16 For he never thought of doing a kindness,
     but hounded to death the poor
     and the needy(y) and the brokenhearted.(z)
17 He loved to pronounce a curse—
     may it come back on him.(aa)
He found no pleasure in blessing—
     may it be far from him.
18 He wore cursing(ab) as his garment;
     it entered into his body like water,(ac)
     into his bones like oil.
19 May it be like a cloak wrapped(ad) about him,
     like a belt tied forever around him.
20 May this be the Lord 's payment(ae) to my accusers,
     to those who speak evil(af) of me.

21 But you, Sovereign Lord ,
     help me for your name's sake;(ag)
     out of the goodness of your love,(ah) deliver me.(ai)
22 For I am poor and needy,
     and my heart is wounded within me.
23 I fade away like an evening shadow;(aj)
     I am shaken off like a locust.
24 My knees give(ak) way from fasting;(al)
     my body is thin and gaunt.(am)
25 I am an object of scorn(an) to my accusers;
     when they see me, they shake their heads.(ao)

26 Help me,(ap) Lord my God;
     save me according to your unfailing love.
27 Let them know(aq) that it is your hand,
     that you, Lord , have done it.
28 While they curse,(ar) may you bless;
     may those who attack me be put to shame,
     but may your servant rejoice.(as)
29 May my accusers be clothed with disgrace
     and wrapped in shame(at) as in a cloak.

30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord ;
     in the great throng(au) of worshipers I will praise him.
31 For he stands at the right hand(av) of the needy,
     to save their lives from those who would condemn them.

     your young men will come to you
     like dew from the morning's womb.[b](h)

4 The Lord has sworn
     and will not change his mind:(i)
"You are a priest forever,(j)
     in the order of Melchizedek.(k)"

5 The Lord is at your right hand[c];(l)
     he will crush kings(m) on the day of his wrath.(n)
6 He will judge the nations,(o) heaping up the dead(p)
     and crushing the rulers(q) of the whole earth.
7 He will drink from a brook along the way,[d]
     and so he will lift his head high.(r)

3 Glorious and majestic are his deeds,

4 He has caused his wonders to be remembered;
     the Lord is gracious and compassionate.(h)
5 He provides food(i) for those who fear him;(j)
     he remembers his covenant(k) forever.

6 He has shown his people the power of his works,(l)
     giving them the lands of other nations.(m)

     all his precepts are trustworthy.(o)
8 They are established for ever(p) and ever,
     enacted in faithfulness and uprightness.
9 He provided redemption(q) for his people;
     he ordained his covenant forever—

8 Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear;(o)
     in the end they will look in triumph on their foes.(p)
9 They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor,(q)

5 Woe to me that I dwell in Meshek,

3 Jerusalem is built like a city
     that is closely compacted together.
4 That is where the tribes go up—
     the tribes of the Lord
to praise the name of the Lord
     according to the statute given to Israel.
5 There stand the thrones for judgment,

2 As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,

5 May all who hate Zion(h)

11 The Lord swore an oath to David,(m)
     a sure oath he will not revoke:
"One of your own descendants(n)
     I will place on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant(o)
     and the statutes I teach them,
then their sons will sit
     on your throne(p) for ever and ever."

6 The Lord does whatever pleases him,(l)

John 16

Chapter 16

1  "All this(a) I have told you so that you will not fall away.(b) 2 They will put you out of the synagogue;(c) in fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God.(d) 3 They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.(e) 4 I have told you this, so that when their time comes you will remember(f) that I warned you about them. I did not tell you this from the beginning because I was with you,(g) 5 but now I am going to him who sent me.(h) None of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?'(i) 6 Rather, you are filled with grief(j) because I have said these things. 7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate(k) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.(l) 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin,(m) because people do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness,(n) because I am going to the Father,(o) where you can see me no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world(p) now stands condemned.

12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.(q) 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth,(r) comes, he will guide you into all the truth.(s) He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine.(t) That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you."

The Disciples' Grief Will Turn to Joy

16 Jesus went on to say, "In a little while(u) you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me."(v)

17 At this, some of his disciples said to one another, "What does he mean by saying, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me,'(w) and ‘Because I am going to the Father' ?"(x) 18 They kept asking, "What does he mean by ‘a little while' ? We don't understand what he is saying."

19 Jesus saw that they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you asking one another what I meant when I said, ‘In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'? 20 Very truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn(y) while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.(z) 21 A woman giving birth to a child has pain(aa) because her time has come; but when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that a child is born into the world. 22 So with you: Now is your time of grief,(ab) but I will see you again(ac) and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.(ad) 23 In that day(ae) you will no longer ask me anything. Very truly I tell you, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.(af) 24 Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive,(ag) and your joy will be complete.(ah)

25 "Though I have been speaking figuratively,(ai) a time is coming(aj) when I will no longer use this kind of language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name.(ak) I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf. 27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me(al) and have believed that I came from God.(am) 28 I came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father."(an)

29 Then Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech.(ao) 30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe(ap) that you came from God."(aq)

31 "Do you now believe?" Jesus replied. 32 "A time is coming(ar) and in fact has come when you will be scattered,(as) each to your own home. You will leave me all alone.(at) Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me.(au)

33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.(av) In this world you will have trouble.(aw) But take heart! I have overcome(ax) the world."
