Esther 3,4,5

Haman's Plot against the Jews

1 After these events King Ahasuerus (C1)honored Haman, the son of Hammedatha (C2)the Agagite, and (C1)promoted him and (F1)established his authority over all the officials who were with him.2 All the king's servants who were at the king's gate bowed down and paid (F1)homage to Haman; for so the king had commanded regarding him. But (C1)Mordecai neither bowed down nor paid (F1)homage.3 Then the king's servants who were at (C1)the king's gate said to Mordecai, "(C2)Why are you violating the king's command?"4 Now it was when they had spoken daily to him and he would not listen to them, that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai's reason would (F1)stand; for he had told them that he was a Jew.5 When Haman saw that (C1)Mordecai neither bowed down nor paid (F1)homage to him, Haman was filled with rage.6 But he (F1)considered it beneath his dignity to (F2)kill Mordecai alone, for they had told him who the people of Mordecai were; so Haman (C1)sought to annihilate all the Jews, the people of Mordecai, who were found throughout the kingdom of Ahasuerus.

7 In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, (F1)Pur, that is the lot, was (C1)cast before Haman from day to day and from month to month, (F2)until the twelfth month, that is (C2)the month Adar.8 Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, "There is a certain people scattered and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom; (C1)their laws are different from those of all other people and they do not (F1)comply with the king's laws, so it is not in the king's interest to let them remain.9 "If it is pleasing to the king, let it be (F1)decreed that they be eliminated, and I will pay (F2)ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who carry out the king's business, to put into the king's treasuries."10 Then (C1)the king took his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, the son of Hammedatha (C2)the Agagite, (C3)the enemy of the Jews.11 And the king said to Haman, "The silver is (F1)yours, and the people also, to do with them as you please."

12 (C1)Then the king's scribes were summoned on the thirteenth day of the first month, and it was written just as Haman commanded to (C2)the king's satraps, to the governors who were over each province and to the officials of each people, each province according to its script, each people according to its language, being written (C3)in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king's signet ring.13 Letters were sent by (C1)couriers to all the king's provinces (C2)to annihilate, kill, and destroy all the Jews, both young and old, women and children, (C3)in one day, the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar, and to (C4)seize their possessions as plunder.14 (C1)A copy of the edict to be (F1)issued as law in every province was published to all the peoples so that they would be ready for this day.15 The couriers went out, speeded by the king's (F1)order while the decree was (F2)issued at the citadel in Susa; and while the king and Haman sat down to drink, (C1)the city of Susa was agitated.

Esther Learns of Haman's Plot

1 When Mordecai learned of (C1)everything that had been done, (F1)he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city and wailed loudly and bitterly.2 And he came as far as the king's gate, for no one was to enter the king's gate clothed in sackcloth.3 In each and every province where the command and decree of the king came, there was great mourning among the Jews, with (C1)fasting, weeping, and mourning rites; and many had sackcloth and ashes spread out as a bed.

4 Then Esther's attendants and her eunuchs came and informed her, and the queen was seized by great fear. And she sent garments to clothe Mordecai so that he would remove his sackcloth from him, but he did not accept them.5 Then Esther summoned Hathach from the king's eunuchs, whom (F1)the king had appointed to attend her, and ordered him to go to Mordecai to learn what this mourning was and why it was happening.6 So Hathach went out to Mordecai in the city square, in front of the king's gate.7 Mordecai told him everything that had happened to him, and (C1)the exact amount of money that Haman had promised to pay to the king's treasuries for the elimination of the Jews.8 He also gave him (C1)a copy of the text of the edict which had been issued in Susa for their annihilation, so that he might show Esther and inform her, and to order her to go in to the king to implore his favor and plead with him for her people.

9 So Hathach came back and reported Mordecai's words to Esther.10 Then Esther spoke to Hathach and ordered him to reply to Mordecai:11 "All the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces know that for any man or woman who (C1)comes to the king in the inner courtyard, who is not summoned, (C2)he has only one law, that he be put to death, unless the king holds out (C3)to him the golden scepter so that he may live. And I have not been summoned to come to the king for these thirty days."12 And they reported Esther's words to Mordecai.

13 Then Mordecai told them to reply to Esther, "Do not imagine that you in the king's palace can escape any more than all the other Jews.14 "For if you keep silent at this time, liberation and (C1)rescue will arise for the Jews from another place, and you and your father's house will perish. And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?"

Esther Plans to Intercede

15 Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai,16 "Go, gather all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; (C1)do not eat or drink for (C2)three days, night or day. I and my attendants also will fast in the same way. And then I will go in to the king, which is not in accordance with the law; and if I perish, I perish."17 So Mordecai went away and did just as Esther had commanded him.

Esther Plans a Banquet

1 Now it came about (C1)on the third day that Esther put on her royal robes and stood (C2)in the inner courtyard of the king's palace in front of the king's (F1)rooms, and the king was sitting on his royal throne in the (F2)throne room, opposite the entrance to the palace.2 When the king saw Esther the queen standing in the courtyard, (C1)she obtained favor in his sight; and (C2)the king extended to Esther the golden scepter which was in his hand. So Esther approached and touched the top of the scepter.3 Then the king said to her, "What is troubling you, Queen Esther? And what is your request? (C1)Up to half of the kingdom it shall be given to you."4 Esther said, "If it pleases the king, may the king and Haman come this day to the banquet that I have prepared for him."

5 Then the king said, "(C1)Bring Haman quickly so that we may do (F1)as Esther desires." So the king and Haman came to the banquet which Esther had prepared.6 (F1)As they drank their wine at the banquet, (C1)the king said to Esther, "(C2)What is your request, for it shall be granted to you. And what is your wish? Up to half of the kingdom it shall be done."7 So Esther replied, "My request and my wish is:8 (C1)if I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my request and do (F1)what I wish, may the king and Haman come to (C2)the banquet which I will prepare for them, and tomorrow I will do (F2)as the king says."

Haman's Pride

9 Then Haman went out that day joyful and pleased of heart; but when Haman saw Mordecai (C1)at the king's gate and (C2)that he did not stand up or tremble before him, Haman was filled with anger against Mordecai.10 Haman controlled himself, however, and went to his house. But he (F1)sent for his friends and his wife (C1)Zeresh.11 Then Haman told them of the glory of his riches, and his (C1)many sons, and every occasion on which the king had honored him and how he had (F1)(C2)promoted him above the officials and servants of the king.12 Haman also said, "Even Esther the queen let no one except me come with the king to the banquet which she had prepared; and (C1)tomorrow also I am invited by her with the king.13 "Yet all of this (F1)does not satisfy me every time I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at (C1)the king's gate."14 Then Zeresh his wife and all his friends said to him, "(C1)Have a wooden gallows (F1)fifty cubits high made, and in the morning ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on it; then go joyfully with the king to the banquet." And the (F2)advice pleased Haman, so he had the wooden gallows made.

Revelation 12

Chapter 12

The Woman, Israel

1 A great (C1)sign appeared (C2)in heaven: (C3)a woman (C4)clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars;2 and she was pregnant and she (*)(C1)cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.

The Red Dragon, Satan

3 Then (C1)another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red (C2)dragon having (C3)seven heads and (C4)ten horns, and on his heads were (C5)seven crowns.4 And his tail (*)swept away a (C1)third of the stars of heaven and (C2)hurled them to the earth. And the (C3)dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth (C4)he might devour her Child.

The Male Child, Christ

5 And (C1)she gave birth to a Son, a male, who is going to (F1)(C2)rule all the (F2)nations with a rod of iron; and her Child was (C3)caught up to God and to His throne.6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she (*)had a place prepared by God, so that there (F1)she would be nourished for (C1)1,260 days.

The Angel, Michael

7 And there was war in heaven, (C1)Michael and his angels waging war with the (C2)dragon. The dragon and (C3)his angels waged war,8 and they did not prevail, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven.9 And the great (C1)dragon was thrown down, the (C2)serpent of old who is called the devil and (C3)Satan, who (C4)deceives the whole (F1)world; he was (C5)thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

10 Then I heard (C1)a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the (C2)salvation, and the power, and the (C1)kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the (C3)accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down, the one who accuses them before our God day and night.11 "And they (C1)overcame him because of (C2)the blood of the Lamb and because of (C3)the word of their testimony, and they (C4)did not love their life even (F1)when faced with death.12 "For this reason, (C1)rejoice, you heavens and (C2)you who dwell in them. (C3)Woe to the earth and the sea, because (C4)the devil has come down to you with great wrath, knowing that he has only (C5)a short time."

13 And when the (C1)dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted (C2)the woman who gave birth to the male Child.14 But the (C1)two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly (C2)into the wilderness to her place, where she (*)was nourished for (C3)a time, times, and half a time, away from the presence of the serpent.15 And the (C1)serpent hurled water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood.16 (F1)But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon had hurled out of his mouth.17 So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to (C1)make war with the rest of her (F1)(C2)children, who (C3)keep the commandments of God and (C4)hold to the testimony of Jesus.
