John 12:12-14:11

Chapter 12

12 On the next day, when (C1)the large crowd that had come to (C2)the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,13 they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began shouting, "(C1)Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, indeed, the (C2)King of Israel!"14 Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:15 "(C1)DO NOT FEAR, DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING, SEATED ON A DONKEY'S COLT."16 (C1)These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus (C2)was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things for Him.17 So (C1)the (F1)people, who were with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead, continued to testify about Him.18 (C1)For this reason also the (F1)people went to meet Him, (C2)because they heard that He had performed this (F2)sign.19 So the Pharisees said (F1)to one another, "You see that you are not accomplishing anything; look, the world has gone after Him!"

Greeks Seek Jesus

20 Now there were some (C1)Greeks among those who were going up to worship at (C2)the feast;21 these people then came to (C1)Philip, who was from (C2)Bethsaida of Galilee, and were making a request of him, saying, "Sir, we wish to see Jesus."22 Philip (*)came and (*)told (C1)Andrew; then Andrew and Philip (*)came and (*)told Jesus.23 But Jesus (*)answered them by saying, "(C1)The hour has come for the Son of Man to (C2)be glorified.24 "Truly, truly I say to you, (C1)unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.25 "(C1)The one who loves his (F1)life loses it, and the one who (C2)hates his (F1)life in this world will keep it (F2)to eternal life.26 "If anyone (F1)serves Me, he must follow Me; and (C1)where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone (F1)serves Me, the Father will (C2)honor him.

Jesus Foretells His Death

27 "(C1)Now My soul has become troubled; and what am I to say? '(C2)Father, save Me from (C3)this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour.28 "(C1)Father, glorify Your name." Then a (C2)voice came out of heaven: "I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again."29 So the crowd who stood by and heard it were saying that it had thundered; others were saying, "(C1)An angel has spoken to Him!"30 Jesus responded and said, "(C1)This voice has not come for My sake, but for yours.31 "(C1)Now judgment is upon this world; now (C2)the ruler of this world will be cast out.32 "And I, if I (C1)am lifted up from the earth, will (C2)draw all people to Myself."33 Now He was saying this (C1)to indicate what kind of death He was going to die.34 The crowd then answered Him, "We have heard from (C1)the Law that (C2)the (F1)Christ is to remain forever; and how is it that You say, 'The (C3)Son of Man must be (C4)lifted up'? Who is this (C3)Son of Man?"35 So Jesus said to them, "(C1)For a little while longer (C2)the Light is among you. (C3)Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who (C4)walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

36 "While you have the Light, (C1)believe in the Light, so that you may become (C2)sons of Light." These things Jesus proclaimed, and He went away and (C3)hid Himself from them.37 But though He had performed so many (F1)signs in their sight, they still were not believing in Him.38 This happened so that the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke would be fulfilled: "(C1)LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT? AND TO WHOM HAS THE ARM OF THE LORD BEEN REVEALED?"39 For this reason they could not believe, for Isaiah said again,40 "(C1)HE HAS BLINDED THEIR EYES AND HE (C2)HARDENED THEIR HEART, SO THAT THEY WILL NOT SEE WITH THEIR EYES AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART, AND (F1)BE CONVERTED, AND SO I WILL NOT HEAL THEM."41 These things Isaiah said because (C1)he saw His glory, and (C2)he spoke about Him.42 Nevertheless (C1)many, even of (C2)the rulers, believed in Him, but (C3)because of the Pharisees they were not confessing Him, so that they would not be (C4)excommunicated from the synagogue;43 (C1)for they loved the (F1)approval of people rather than the (F1)approval of God.

44 Now Jesus cried out and said, "(C1)The one who believes in Me, does not believe only in Me, but also in Him who sent Me.45 "And (C1)the one who sees Me sees Him who sent Me.46 "(C1)I have come as Light into the world, so that no one who believes in Me will remain in darkness.47 "If anyone hears My (F1)teachings and does not keep them, I do not judge him; for (C1)I did not come to judge the world, but to save the world.48 "(C1)The one who rejects Me and does not (F1)accept My (F2)teachings has one who judges him: (C2)the word which I spoke. That will judge him on (C3)the last day.49 "(C1)For I did not speak (F1)on My own, but the Father Himself who sent Me (C2)has given Me a commandment as to what to say and what to speak.50 "And I know that (C1)His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak (C2)just as the Father has told Me."

Chapter 13

The Lord's Supper

1 Now before the Feast of (C1)the Passover, Jesus, knowing that (C2)His hour had come that He would depart from this world (C3)to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them (F1)to the end.2 And during supper, (C1)the devil having already put into the heart of (C2)Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon, to betray Him,3 Jesus, (C1)knowing that the Father had handed all things over to Him, and that (C2)He had come forth from God and was going back to God,4 (*)got up from supper and (*)laid His outer garments aside; and He took a towel and (C1)tied it around Himself.

Jesus Washes the Disciples' Feet

5 Then He (*)poured water into the basin, and began (C1)washing the disciples' feet and wiping them with the towel which He had tied around Himself.6 So He (*)came to Simon Peter. He (*)said to Him, "Lord, You are washing my feet?"7 Jesus answered and said to him, "What I am doing, you do not realize right now, but you will understand (C1)later."8 Peter (*)said to Him, "Never shall You wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "(C1)If I do not wash you, (C2)you have no (F1)place with Me."9 Simon Peter (*)said to Him, "Lord, then wash not only my feet, but also my hands and my head!"10 Jesus (*)said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet; otherwise he is completely clean. And (C1)you are clean—but (F1)not all of you."11 For (C1)He knew the one who was betraying Him; it was for this reason that He said, "Not all of you are clean."

12 Then, when He had washed their feet, and (C1)taken His garments and reclined at the table again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done for you?13 "You call Me (C1)'Teacher' and (C2)'Lord'; and (F1)you are correct, for so I am.14 "So if I, (C1)the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.15 "For I gave you (C1)an example, so that you also would do just as I did for you.16 "Truly, truly I say to you, (C1)a slave is not greater than his master, nor is (F1)(C2)one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.17 "If you know these things, you are (C1)blessed if you do them.18 "(C1)I am not speaking about all of you. I know the ones whom I have (C2)chosen; but this is happening (C3)so that the Scripture may be fulfilled, '(C4)HE WHO EATS MY BREAD HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.'19 "From now on (C1)I am telling you before it happens, so that when it does happen, you may believe that (C2)I am He.20 "Truly, truly I say to you, (C1)the one who (F1)receives anyone I send, (F1)receives Me; and the one who (F1)receives Me (F1)receives Him who sent Me."

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal

21 When Jesus had said these things, He (C1)became troubled in spirit, and (F1)testified and said, "Truly, truly I say to you that (C2)one of you will (F2)betray Me."22 The disciples began looking at one another, (C1)at a loss to know of which one He was speaking.23 Lying back on (C1)Jesus' chest was one of His disciples, (C2)whom Jesus loved.24 So Simon Peter (*)nodded to this disciple and (*)said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom He is speaking."25 He then simply (C1)leaned back on Jesus' chest and (*)said to Him, "Lord, who is it?"26 Jesus then (*)answered, "That man is the one for whom I shall dip the piece of bread and give it to him." So when He had dipped the piece of bread, He (*)took and (*)gave it to Judas, (C1)the son of Simon Iscariot.27 After (F1)this, (C1)Satan then (C2)entered him. Therefore Jesus (*)said to him, "What you are doing, do it quickly."28 Now none of those reclining at the table knew for what purpose He had said this to him.29 For some were assuming, since Judas (C1)kept the money box, that Jesus was saying to him, "Buy the things we need (C2)for the feast"; or else, that he was to (F1)(C3)give something to the poor.30 So after receiving the piece of bread, he left immediately; and (C1)it was night.

31 Therefore when he had left, Jesus (*)said, "Now (F1)is (C1)the Son of Man (C2)glorified, and (C3)God (F1)is glorified in Him;32 (F1)if God is glorified in Him, (C1)God will also glorify Him in Himself, and will glorify Him immediately.33 "(C1)Little children, I am still with you (C2)a little longer. (C3)You will look for Me; and just as I said to the (F1)Jews, now I also say to you: 'Where I am going, you cannot come.'34 "I am giving you a (C1)new commandment, (C2)that you love one another; (C3)just as I have loved you, that you also love one another.35 "(C1)By this all people will know that you are My disciples: if you have love for one another."

36 Simon Peter (*)said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus answered, "(C1)Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now; but (C2)you will follow later."37 Peter (*)said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You right now? (C1)I will lay down my life for You."38 Jesus (*)replied, "Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly I say to you, (C1)a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times.

Chapter 14

Jesus Comforts His Disciples

1 "(C1)Do not let your heart be troubled; (F1)believe in God, believe also in Me.2 "In My Father's house are many (F1)rooms; if that were not so, (F2)I would have told you, because (C1)I am going there to prepare a place for you.3 "And if I go and prepare a place for you, (C1)I am coming again and will take you to Myself, so that (C2)where I am, there you also will be.4 "And you know the way where I am going."5 (C1)Thomas (*)said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going; how do we know the way?"6 Jesus (*)said to him, "I am (C1)the way, and (C2)the truth, and (C3)the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.

Oneness with the Father

7 "(C1)If you (F1)had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you (C2)know Him, and have (C3)seen Him."

8 (C1)Philip (*)said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us."9 Jesus (*)said to him, "Have I been with (F1)you for so long a time, and yet (F2)you have not come to know Me, Philip? (C1)The one who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, 'Show us the Father'?10 "Do you not believe that (C1)I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? (C2)The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own, but the Father, as He remains in Me, does His works.11 "Believe Me that (C1)I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise (C2)believe because of the works themselves.<
