John 8:21-10:18

Chapter 8

21 Then He said again to them, "I am going away, and (C1)you will look for Me, and (C2)will die in your sin; where I am going, you cannot come."22 So (C1)the Jews were saying, "Surely He will not kill Himself, will He, since He says, '(C2)Where I am going, you cannot come'?"23 And He was saying to them, "(C1)You are from below, I am from above; (C2)you are of this world, (C3)I am not of this world.24 "Therefore I said to you that you (C1)will die in your sins; for unless you believe that (F1)(C2)I am, (C1)you will die in your sins."25 Then they were saying to Him, "Who are You?" Jesus said to them, "(F1)What have I even been saying to you from the beginning?26 "I have many things to say and to judge regarding you, but (C1)He who sent Me is true; and (C2)the things which I heard from Him, these I say to the world."27 They did not realize that He was speaking to them about the Father.28 So Jesus said, "When you (C1)lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that (F1)(C2)I am, and (C3)I do nothing (F2)on My own, but I say these things as the Father instructed Me.29 "And He who sent Me is with Me; (C1)He (F1)has not left Me alone, for (C2)I always do the things that are pleasing to Him."30 As He said these things, (C1)many came to believe in Him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "(C1)If you continue in My word, then you are truly My (C2)disciples;32 and (C1)you will know the truth, and (C2)the truth will set you free."33 They answered Him, "(C1)We are Abraham's descendants and have never been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will become free'?"

34 Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly I say to you, (C1)everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.35 "Now (C1)the slave does not remain in the house forever; (C2)the son does remain forever.36 "So if the Son (C1)sets you free, you really will be free.37 "I know that you are (C1)Abraham's descendants; yet (C2)you are seeking to kill Me, because My word (F1)has no place in you.38 "I speak of the things which I have seen (F1)with My Father; therefore you also do the things which you heard from (C1)your father."

39 They answered and said to Him, "Abraham is (C1)our father." Jesus (*)said to them, "(C2)If you are Abraham's children, do the deeds of Abraham.40 "But as it is, (C1)you are seeking to kill Me, a Man who has (C2)told you the truth, which I heard from God; this Abraham did not do.41 "You are doing the deeds of (C1)your father." They said to Him, "We were not born as a result of sexual immorality; (C2)we have one Father: God."42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, (C1)you would love Me, (C2)for I came forth from God and am here; for I have (C3)not even come (F1)on My own, but (F2)(C4)He sent Me.43 "Why do you not understand (F1)(C1)what I am saying? It is because you cannot (C2)listen to My word.44 "(C1)You are of (C2)your father the devil, and (C3)you want to do the desires of your father. (C4)He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because (C5)there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells (F1)a lie, he (C6)speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of (F2)lies.45 "But because (C1)I say the truth, you do not believe Me.46 "Which one of you convicts Me of sin? If (C1)I speak truth, why do you not believe Me?47 "(C1)The one who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God."

48 (C1)The Jews answered and said to Him, "Do we not rightly say that You are a (C2)Samaritan, and You (C3)have a demon?"49 Jesus answered, "I do not (C1)have a demon; on the contrary, I honor My Father, and you dishonor Me.50 "But (C1)I am not seeking My glory; there is One who seeks it, and judges.51 "Truly, truly I say to you, if anyone (C1)follows My word, he will never (C2)see death."52 (C1)The Jews said to Him, "Now we know that You (C2)have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets as well; and yet You say, 'If anyone (C3)follows My word, he will never (C4)taste of death.'53 "You (C1)are not greater than our father Abraham, who died, are You? The prophets died too. Whom do You make Yourself out to be?"54 Jesus answered, "(C1)If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; (C2)it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, 'He is our God';55 and (C1)you have not come to know Him, (C2)but I know Him. And if I say that I do not know Him, I will be (C3)a liar like you; (C2)but I do know Him, and I (C4)follow His word.56 "(C1)Your father Abraham was (C2)overjoyed that he would see My day, and he saw it and rejoiced."57 (C1)So the Jews said to Him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and You have seen Abraham?"58 Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly I say to you, before Abraham (F1)was born, (F2)(C1)I am."59 Therefore they (C1)picked up stones to throw at Him, but Jesus (C2)hid Himself and left the temple grounds.

Chapter 9

Healing the Man Born Blind

1 As Jesus passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from birth.2 And His disciples asked Him, "(C1)Rabbi, who sinned, (C2)this man or his (C3)parents, that he would be born blind?"3 Jesus answered, "It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was (C1)so that the works of God might be displayed in him.4 "We must carry out the works of Him who sent Me (C1)as long as it is day; night is coming, when no one can work.5 "While I am in the world, I am (C1)the Light of the world."6 When He had said this, He (C1)spit on the ground, and made mud from the saliva, and applied the mud to his eyes,7 and said to him, "Go, wash in (C1)the pool of Siloam" (which is translated, Sent). So he left and (C2)washed, and (C3)came back seeing.8 So the neighbors, and those who previously saw (F1)him as a beggar, were saying, "Is this not the one who used to (C1)sit and beg?"9 Others were saying, "This is he," still others were saying, "No, but he is like him." (F1)The man himself kept saying, "I am the one."10 So they were saying to him, "How then were your eyes opened?"11 He answered, "The Man who is called Jesus made mud, and spread it on my eyes, and said to me, 'Go to (C1)Siloam and wash'; so I went away and washed, and I received sight."12 And they said to him, "Where is He?" He (*)said, "I do not know."

Controversy over the Man

13 They (*)brought (F1)the man who was previously blind to the Pharisees.14 (C1)Now it was a Sabbath on the day that Jesus made the mud and opened his eyes.15 (C1)Then the Pharisees also were asking him again how he received his sight. And he said to them, "He applied mud to my eyes, and I washed, and I see."16 Therefore some of the Pharisees were saying, "This Man is not from God, because He (C1)does not keep the Sabbath." But others were saying, "How can a man who is a sinner perform such (F1)(C2)signs?" And (C3)there was dissension among them.17 So they (*)said (C1)again to the man who was blind, "What do you say about Him, since He opened your eyes?" And he said, "He is a (C2)prophet."

18 (C1)The Jews then did not believe it about him, that he had been blind and had received sight, until they called the parents of the very one who had received his sight,19 and they questioned them, saying, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? Then how does he now see?"20 His parents then answered and said, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind;21 but how he now sees, we do not know; or who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him; he is of age, he will speak for himself."22 His parents said this because they (C1)were afraid of the (F1)Jews; for the Jews (C2)had already reached the decision that if anyone confessed Him to be (F2)Christ, (C3)he was to be excommunicated from the synagogue.23 It was for this reason that his parents said, "(C1)He is of age; ask him."

24 So for a second time they summoned the man who had been blind, and said to him, "(C1)Give glory to God; we know that (C2)this Man is a sinner."25 He then answered, "Whether He is a sinner, I do not know; one thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see."26 So they said to him, "What did He do to you? How did He open your eyes?"27 He answered them, "(C1)I told you already and you did not (C2)listen; why do you want to hear it again? You do not want to become His disciples too, do you?"28 They spoke abusively to him and said, "You are His disciple, but (C1)we are disciples of Moses.29 "We know that God has spoken to Moses, but as for this Man, (C1)we do not know where He is from."30 The man answered and said to them, "Well, here is the amazing thing, that you do not know where He is from, and yet He opened my eyes!31 "We know that (C1)God does not listen to sinners; but if someone is (F1)God-fearing and does His will, He listens to him.32 "(F1)Since the beginning of time it has never been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a person born blind.33 "(C1)If this Man were not from God, He could do nothing."34 They answered him, "(C1)You were born entirely in sins, and yet you are teaching us?" So they (F1)(C2)put him out.

Jesus Affirms His Deity

35 Jesus heard that they had (F1)(C1)put him out, and upon finding him, He said, "Do you believe in the (C2)Son of Man?"36 He answered (F1)by saying, "And (C1)who is He, (F2)Sir, that I may believe in Him?"37 Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him, and (C1)He is the One who is talking with you."38 And he said, "I believe, Lord." And he (C1)worshiped Him.39 And Jesus said, "(C1)For judgment I came into this world, so that (C2)those who do not see may see, and (C3)those who see may become blind."40 Those who were with Him from the Pharisees heard these things and said to Him, "(C1)We are not blind too, are we?"41 Jesus said to them, "(C1)If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now that you maintain, '(C2)We see,' your sin remains.

Chapter 10

Parable of the Good Shepherd

1 "Truly, truly I say to you, the one who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is (C1)a thief and a robber.2 "But the one who enters by the door is (C1)a shepherd of the sheep.3 "To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep listen to (C1)his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and (C2)leads them out.4 "When he puts all his own sheep outside, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know (C1)his voice.5 "However, a stranger they simply will not follow, but will flee from him, because they do not know (C1)the voice of strangers."6 Jesus told them this (C1)figure of speech, but they did not understand what the things which He was saying to them (F1)meant.

7 So Jesus said to them again, "Truly, truly I say to you, I am (C1)the door of the sheep.8 "All those who came before Me are (C1)thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.9 "(C1)I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.10 "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they (C1)would have life, and (F1)have it abundantly.

11 "(C1)I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd (C2)lays down His life for the sheep.12 "He who is a hired hand, and not a (C1)shepherd, who is not the owner of the sheep, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf snatches them and scatters the flock.13 "He flees because he is a hired hand and does not care about the sheep.14 "(C1)I am the good shepherd, and (C2)I know My own, and My own know Me,15 just as (C1)the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and (C2)I lay down My life for the sheep.16 "And I have (C1)other sheep that are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will listen to My voice; and they will become (C2)one flock, with (C3)one shepherd.17 "For this reason the Father loves Me, because I (C1)lay down My life so that I may take it back.18 "(C1)No one has taken it away from Me, but I (C2)lay it down on My own. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it back. (C3)This commandment I received from My Father."<
