John 6:52-8:20
Chapter 6
52 (C1)Then the Jews (C2)began to argue with one another, saying, "How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?"53 So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of (C1)the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.54 "The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will (C1)raise him up on the last day.55 "For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.56 "The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood (C1)remains in Me, and I in him.57 "Just as the (C1)living Father (C2)sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.58 "This is the bread that (C1)came down out of heaven, not as (C2)the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread (C3)will live forever."
Words to the Disciples
59 These things He said (C1)in the synagogue as He taught (C2)in Capernaum.60 So then many of His (C1)disciples, when they heard this, said, "(C2)This statement is very (F1)unpleasant; who can listen to it?"61 But Jesus, (C1)aware that His disciples were complaining about this, said to them, "Is this (F1)(C2)offensive to you?62 "What then if you see (C1)the Son of Man (C2)ascending to where He was before?63 "(C1)It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh provides no benefit; (C2)the words that I have spoken to you are spirit, and are life.64 "But there are (C1)some of you who do not believe." For Jesus (C2)knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and (C3)who it was who would (F1)betray Him.65 And He was saying, "For this reason I have (C1)told you that no one can come to Me unless (C2)it has been granted him from the Father."
Peter's Confession of Faith
66 As a result of this many of His (C1)disciples (C2)left, and would no longer walk with Him.67 So Jesus said to (C1)the twelve, "You do not want to leave also, do you?"68 (C1)Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have (C2)words of eternal life.69 "And we have already believed and have come to know that You are (C1)the Holy One of God."70 Jesus answered them, "(C1)Did I Myself not choose you, (C2)the twelve? And yet one of you is (C3)a devil."71 Now He meant Judas (C1)the son of Simon Iscariot; for he, (C2)one of (C3)the twelve, (F1)was going to betray Him.
Chapter 7
Jesus Teaches at the Feast
1 After these things Jesus (C1)was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because (C2)the Jews (C3)were seeking to kill Him.2 Now the feast of the Jews, (C1)the Feast of Booths, was near.3 So His (C1)brothers said to Him, "Move on from here and go into Judea, so that Your (C2)disciples also may see Your works which You are doing.4 "For no one does anything in secret (F1)when he himself is striving to be known publicly. If You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world."5 For not even His (C1)brothers believed in Him.6 So Jesus (*)said to them, "(C1)My time is not yet here, but your time is always ready.7 "(C1)The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify about it, that (C2)its deeds are evil.8 "Go up to the feast yourselves; I am not going up to this feast, because (C1)My time has not yet fully arrived."9 Now having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee.
10 But when His (C1)brothers had gone up to the feast, then He Himself also went up, not publicly, but as though in secret.11 (C1)So the Jews (C2)were looking for Him at the feast and saying, "Where is He?"12 And there was a great deal of talk about Him in secret among the crowds: (C1)some were saying, "He is a good man"; others were saying, "No, on the contrary, He is misleading the people."13 However, no one was speaking openly about Him, for (C1)fear of (F1)the Jews.
14 But when it was now the middle of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple area, and began to (C1)teach.15 (C1)The Jews then were astonished, saying, "How has this Man (C2)become learned, not having been educated?"16 So Jesus answered them and said, "(C1)My teaching is not My own, but His who sent Me.17 "(C1)If anyone is willing to do His will, he will know about the teaching, whether it is of God, or I am speaking from Myself.18 "The one who speaks from himself (C1)seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.
19 "(C1)Did Moses not give you the Law, and yet none of you carries out the Law? Why are you (C2)seeking to kill Me?"20 The crowd answered, "(C1)You have a demon! Who is seeking to kill You?"21 Jesus answered them, "I did (C1)one (F1)deed, and you all are astonished.22 "For this reason (C1)Moses has given you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from (C2)the fathers), and even on a Sabbath you circumcise a man.23 "(C1)If a man receives circumcision on a Sabbath so that the Law of Moses will not be broken, are you angry at Me because I made an entire man well on a Sabbath?24 "Do not (C1)judge by the outward appearance, but judge (F1)with righteous judgment."
25 So some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, "Is this Man not the one whom they are seeking to kill?26 "And yet look, He is speaking publicly, and they are saying nothing to Him. (C1)The rulers do not really know that this is the (F1)Christ, do they?27 "However, (C1)we know where this Man is from; but when the Christ comes, no one knows where He is from."28 Then Jesus cried out in the temple, (C1)teaching and saying, "(C2)You both know Me and you know where I am from; and (C3)I have not come of Myself, but He who sent Me is true, whom you do not know.29 "(C1)I do know Him, because (C2)I am from Him, and (C3)He sent Me."30 So they (C1)were seeking to arrest Him; and yet no one laid a hand on Him, because His (C2)hour had not yet come.31 But (C1)many of the crowd believed in Him; and they were saying, "(C2)When the (F1)Christ comes, He will not perform more (F2)(C3)signs than those which this man has done, will He?"
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering these things about Him, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent (C1)officers to (C2)arrest Him.33 Therefore Jesus said, "(C1)For a little while longer I am going to be with you, and then (C2)I am going to Him who sent Me.34 "(C1)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come."35 (C1)The Jews then said to one another, "(C2)Where does this Man intend to go that we will not find Him? He does not intend to go to (C3)the Dispersion among (C4)the Greeks, and teach the Greeks, does He?36 "What is this statement that He said, '(C1)You will seek Me, and will not find Me; and where I am, you cannot come'?"
37 Now on (C1)the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "(C2)If anyone is thirsty, (F1)let him come to Me and drink.38 "The one who believes in Me, (C1)as the Scripture said, '(F1)From his innermost being will flow rivers of (C2)living water.'"39 But this He said (C1)in reference to the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for (C2)the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet (C3)glorified.
People's Division over Jesus
40 Some of the people therefore, after they heard these words, were saying, "This truly is (C1)the Prophet."41 Others were saying, "This is the (F1)Christ." But others were saying, "(C1)Surely the (F1)Christ is not coming from Galilee, is He?42 "Has the Scripture not said that the Christ comes from (C1)the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?"43 So (C1)a dissension occurred in the crowd because of Him.44 And (C1)some of them wanted to arrest Him, but no one laid hands on Him.
45 The (C1)officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, "Why did you not bring Him?"46 The (C1)officers answered, "(C2)Never has a man spoken in this way!"47 The Pharisees then replied to them, "(C1)You have not been led astray too, have you?48 "(C1)Not one of (C2)the rulers or Pharisees has believed in Him, has he?49 "But this crowd that does not know the Law is accursed!"50 (C1)Nicodemus (the one who came to Him before, being one of them) (*)said to them,51 "(C1)Our Law does not judge the person unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing, does it?"52 They answered and said to him, "(C1)You are not from Galilee as well, are you? Examine the Scriptures, and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee."53 [[(F1)And everyone went to his home.
Chapter 8
The Adulterous Woman
1 But Jesus went to (C1)the Mount of Olives.2 And early in the morning He came again into the temple area, and all the people were coming to Him; and (C1)He sat down and began teaching them.3 Now the scribes and the Pharisees (*)brought a woman caught in the act of adultery, and after placing her in the center of the courtyard,4 they (*)said to Him, "Teacher, this woman has been caught in the very act of committing adultery.5 "Now in the Law, (C1)Moses commanded us to stone such women; what then do You say?"6 Now they were saying this to (C1)test Him, (C2)so that they might have grounds for accusing Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground.7 When they persisted in asking Him, (C1)He straightened up and said to them, "(C2)He who is without sin among you, let him be the (C3)first to throw a stone at her."8 And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground.9 Now when they heard this, they began leaving, one by one, beginning with the older ones, and He was left alone, and the woman where she was, in the center of the courtyard.10 And (C1)straightening up, Jesus said to her, "Woman, where are they? Did no one condemn you?"11 She said, "No one, (F1)Lord." And Jesus said, "(C1)I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on do not (C2)sin any longer."]]
Jesus Is the Light of the World
12 Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "(C1)I am the Light of the world; (C2)the one who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."13 So the Pharisees said to Him, "(C1)You are testifying about Yourself; Your testimony is not (F1)true."14 Jesus answered and said to them, "(C1)Even if I am testifying about Myself, My testimony is (F1)true, because I know (C2)where I came from and where I am going; but (C3)you do not know where I come from or where I am going.15 "(C1)You judge (F1)according to the flesh; (C2)I am not judging anyone.16 "But even (C1)if I do judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone in it, but I and the Father who sent Me.17 "Even in (C1)your Law it has been written that the testimony of (C2)two people is (F1)true.18 "I am He who testifies about Myself, and (C1)the Father who sent Me testifies about Me."19 So they were saying to Him, "Where is Your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither Me nor My Father; (C1)if you knew Me, you would know My Father also."20 These words He spoke (F1)in (C1)the treasury, as (C2)He taught in the temple area; and no one arrested Him, because (C3)His hour had not yet come.<
