Jeremiah 1-2

Chapter 1

Jeremiah's Call and Commission

1 The words of (C1)Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests who were in (C2)Anathoth in the land of Benjamin,2 to whom the word of the LORD came in the days of (C1)Josiah the son of (C2)Amon, king of Judah, in the (C3)thirteenth year of his reign.3 It came also in the days of (C1)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the end of the eleventh year of (C2)Zedekiah the son of Josiah, king of Judah, until the exile of Jerusalem in the fifth month.

4 Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

5 "Before I (C1)formed you in the womb I knew you,
And (C2)before you were born I consecrated you;
I have (C3)appointed you as a prophet to the nations."

6 Then (C1)I said, "Oh, Lord (F1)GOD!
Behold, I do not know how to speak,
Because (C2)I am a youth."

7 But the LORD said to me,
"Do not say, 'I am a youth,'
(C1)Because everywhere I send you, you shall go,
And (C2)all that I command you, you shall speak.

8 "(C1)Do not be afraid of them,
For (C2)I am with you to save you," declares the LORD.

9 Then the LORD stretched out His hand and (C1)touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me,

"Behold, I have (C2)put My words in your mouth.

10 "See, (C1)I have appointed you this day over the nations and over the kingdoms,
(C2)To root out and to tear down,
To destroy and to overthrow,
(C3)To build and to plant."

The Almond Branch and Boiling Pot

11 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, "What do you see, (C1)Jeremiah?" And I said, "I see a branch of an (F1)almond tree."12 Then the LORD said to me, "You have seen well, for (C1)I am (F1)watching over My word to perform it."

13 And the word of the LORD came to me a second time, saying, "(C1)What do you see?" And I said, "I see a boiling (C2)pot, facing away from the north."14 Then the LORD said to me, "(C1)Out of the north the evil (F1)will be unleashed on all the inhabitants of the land.15 "For, behold, I am calling (C1)all the families of the kingdoms of the north," declares the LORD; "and they will come and (C2)place, each one of them, his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its walls around, and against all the (C3)cities of Judah.16 "And I will (F1)pronounce My judgments against them concerning all their wickedness, since they have (C1)abandoned Me and have (F2)(C2)offered sacrifices to other gods, and worshiped the (C3)works of their own hands.17 "Now, (C1)belt your garment around your waist and arise, and speak to them all that I command you. (C2)Do not be dismayed before them, or I will make you dismayed before them.18 "Now behold, I have made you today like a fortified city and like a pillar of iron and walls of bronze against the whole land, to the kings of Judah, to its leaders, to its priests, and to the people of the land.19 "And they will fight against you but they will not overcome you, for (C1)I am with you to save you," declares the LORD.

Chapter 2

Judah's Apostasy

1 Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying,2 "Go and (C1)proclaim in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, 'This is what the LORD says:

"I remember regarding you the (F1)(C2)devotion of your youth,
Your love when you were a bride,
(C3)Your following after Me in the wilderness,
Through a land not sown.

3 "Israel was (C1)holy to the LORD,
The (C2)first of His harvest.
(C3)All who ate of it became guilty;
Evil came upon them," declares the LORD.'"

4 Hear the word of the LORD, house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Israel.5 This is what the LORD says:

"(C1)What injustice did your fathers find in Me,
That they went far from Me,
And walked after (C2)emptiness and became empty?

6 "They did not say, 'Where is the LORD
Who (C1)brought us up out of the land of Egypt,
Who (C2)led us through the wilderness,
Through a land of deserts and of pits,
Through a land of drought and of (F1)deep darkness,
Through a land that no one crossed
And where no person lived?'

7 "I brought you into the (C1)fruitful land
To eat its fruit and its good things.
But you came and (C2)defiled My land,
And you made My inheritance an abomination.

8 "The (C1)priests did not say, 'Where is the LORD?'
And those who handle the Law (C2)did not know Me;
The (F1)rulers also revolted against Me,
And the (C3)prophets prophesied by Baal
And walked after (C4)things that were of no benefit.

9 "Therefore I will still (C1)contend with you," declares the LORD,
"And I will contend with your sons' sons.

10 "For (C1)cross to the coastlands of (F1)Kittim and see,
And send to (C2)Kedar and observe closely,
And see if there has been anything like this!

11 "Has a nation changed gods,
When (C1)they were not gods?
But My people have (C2)exchanged their glory
For that which is of no benefit.

12 "Be appalled at this, (C1)you heavens,
And shudder, be very desolate," declares the LORD.

13 "For My people have committed two evils:
They have abandoned Me,
The (C1)fountain of living waters,
To carve out for themselves (C2)cisterns,
Broken cisterns
That do not hold water.

14 "Is Israel (C1)a slave? Or is he a servant born in the home?
Why has he become plunder?

15 "The young (C1)lions have roared at him,
They have (F1)roared loudly.
And they have (C2)made his land a waste;
His cities have been destroyed, without inhabitant.

16 "Also the (F1)men of (C1)Memphis and Tahpanhes
Have (F2)shaved (C2)your head.

17 "Have you not (C1)done this to yourself
By your abandoning the LORD your God
When He (C1)led you in the way?

18 "But now what are you doing (C1)on the road to Egypt,
Except to drink the waters of the (F1)(C2)Nile?
Or what are you doing on the road to Assyria,
Except to drink the waters of the Euphrates River?

19 "(C1)Your own wickedness will correct you,
And your (C2)apostasies will punish you;
Know therefore and see that it is evil and (C3)bitter
For you to abandon the LORD your God,
And (C4)the fear of Me is not in you," declares the Lord (F1)GOD of armies.

20 "For long ago (F1)(C1)I broke your yoke
And tore off your restraints;
But you said, 'I will not serve!'
For on every (C2)high hill
And under every leafy tree
You have lain down as a prostitute.

21 "Yet I (C1)planted you as a choice vine,
A completely faithful seed.
How then have you turned yourself before Me
Into the (C2)degenerate shoots of a foreign vine?

22 "Although you (C1)wash yourself with lye
And (F1)use much soap,
The (C2)stain of your guilt is before Me," declares the Lord (F2)GOD.

23 "(C1)How can you say, 'I am not defiled,
I have not gone after the (C2)Baals'?
Look at your way in the (C3)valley!
Know what you have done!
You are a swift young camel (C4)running about senselessly on her ways,

24 A (C1)wild donkey accustomed to the wilderness,
That sniffs the wind in her passion.
Who can turn her away in her mating season?
None who seek her will grow weary;
In her month they will find her.

25 "Keep your feet from being bare,
And your throat from thirst;
But you said, '(C1)It is (F1)hopeless!
No! For I have (C2)loved strangers,
And I will walk after them.'

26 "Like the shame of a (C1)thief when he is discovered,
So the house of Israel is shamed;
They, their kings, their leaders,
Their priests, and their prophets,

27 Who say to a tree, 'You are my father,'
And to a stone, 'You gave me birth.'
For they have turned their (C1)backs to Me,
And not their faces;
But in the (C2)time of their (F1)trouble they will say,
'Arise and save us!'

28 "But where are your (C1)gods
Which you made for yourself?
Let them arise, if they can (C2)save you
In the time of your (F1)trouble!
For (C3)as many as the number of your cities
Are your gods, Judah.

29 "Why do you contend with Me?
You have (C1)all revolted against Me," declares the LORD.

30 "(C1)In vain I have struck your sons;
They did not accept discipline.
Your (C2)sword has devoured your prophets
Like a destroying lion.

31 "You generation, look to the word of the LORD.
Have I been a wilderness to Israel,
Or a (C1)land of thick darkness?
Why do My people say, '(C2)We are free to roam;
We will no longer come to You'?

32 "Can a virgin forget her jewelry,
Or a bride her attire?
Yet My people have (C1)forgotten Me
For days without number.

33 "How well you prepare your way
To seek love!
Therefore even to the wicked women
You have taught your ways.

34 "Also on your skirts is found
The (C1)lifeblood of the innocent poor;
You did not find them (C2)breaking in.
But in spite of all these things,

35 You said, 'I am innocent;
Surely His anger is turned away from me.'
Behold, I will (C1)enter into judgment with you
Because you (C2)say, 'I have not sinned.'

36 "Why do you (C1)go around so much
Changing your way?
Also, (C2)you will be put to shame by Egypt,
Just as you were put to shame by (C3)Assyria.

37 "From this place as well you will go out
With (C1)your hands on your head;
For the LORD has rejected (C2)those in whom you trust,
And you will not prosper with them."

Psalms 119:145-176

Chapter 119

145 I cried out (C1)with all my heart; answer me, LORD!
I will (C2)comply with Your statutes.

146 I cried to You; (C1)save me
And I shall keep Your testimonies.

147 I (F1)(C1)rise before dawn and cry for help;
I (F2)wait for Your words.

148 My eyes anticipate the (C1)night watches,
So that I may (C2)meditate on Your (F1)word.

149 Hear my voice (C1)according to Your faithfulness;
(C2)Revive me, LORD, according to Your judgments.

150 Those who follow after wickedness approach;
They are far from Your Law.

151 You are (C1)near, LORD,
And all Your commandments are (C2)truth.

152 From long ago I have (C1)known from Your testimonies
That You have founded them (C2)forever.

Resh

153 (C1)Look at my (C2)affliction and rescue me,
For I have not (C3)forgotten Your Law.

154 (C1)Plead my cause and (C2)redeem me;
Revive me according to Your (F1)word.

155 Salvation is (C1)far from the wicked,
For they (C2)do not seek Your statutes.

156 (F1)(C1)Great are Your mercies, LORD;
Revive me according to Your judgments.

157 Many are my (C1)persecutors and my enemies,
Yet I do not (C2)turn aside from Your testimonies.

158 I see the (C1)treacherous and (C2)loathe them,
Because they do not keep Your word.

159 Consider how I (C1)love Your precepts;
(C2)Revive me, LORD, according to Your faithfulness.

160 The (C1)sum of Your word is (C2)truth,
And every one of Your righteous judgments (C3)is everlasting.

Shin

161 (C1)Rulers persecute me without cause,
But my heart (C2)stands in awe of Your words.

162 I (C1)rejoice at Your (F1)word,
Like one who (C2)finds great plunder.

163 I (C1)hate and loathe falsehood,
But I (C2)love Your Law.

164 Seven times a day I praise You
Because of Your (C1)righteous judgments.

165 Those who love Your Law have (C1)great peace,
And (F1)(C2)nothing causes them to stumble.

166 I (C1)hope for Your salvation, LORD,
And do Your commandments.

167 My (C1)soul keeps Your testimonies,
And I (C2)love them exceedingly.

168 I (C1)keep Your precepts and Your testimonies,
For all my (C2)ways are before You.

Tav

169 Let my (C1)cry (F1)come before You, LORD;
(C2)Give me understanding (C3)according to Your word.

170 Let my (C1)pleading come before You;
(C2)Save me according to Your (F1)word.

171 Let my (C1)lips pour out praise,
For You (C2)teach me Your statutes.

172 Let my (C1)tongue sing about Your (F1)word,
For all Your (C2)commandments are righteousness.

173 Let Your (C1)hand be (F1)ready to help me,
For I have (C2)chosen Your precepts.

174 I (C1)long for Your salvation, LORD,
And Your Law is my (C2)delight.

175 Let my (C1)soul live that it may praise You,
And let Your ordinances help me.

176 I have (C1)wandered about like a lost sheep; search for Your servant,
For I do (C2)not forget Your commandments.

1 Timothy 5:1-22

Chapter 5

Honor Widows

1 (C1)Do not sharply rebuke an (C2)older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, and to (C3)the younger men as brothers,2 to the older women as mothers, and to the younger women as sisters, in all purity.

3 Honor widows who are actually (C1)widows;4 but if any widow has children or grandchildren, (C1)they must first learn to show proper respect for their own family and to give back compensation to their parents; for this is (C2)acceptable in the sight of God.5 Now she who is actually a (C1)widow and has been left alone (C2)has set her hope on God, and she continues in (C3)requests and prayers night and day.6 But she who (C1)indulges herself in luxury is (C2)dead, even while she lives.7 (F1)(C1)Give these instructions as well, so that they may be above reproach.8 But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has (C1)denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

9 A widow is to be (C1)put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been (C2)the wife of one man,10 having a reputation for (C1)good works; and if she has brought up children, if she has (C2)shown hospitality to strangers, if she (C3)has washed the (F1)saints' feet, if she has (C4)assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work.11 But refuse to register younger widows, for when they feel (C1)physical desires alienating them from Christ, they want to get married,12 thereby incurring condemnation, because they have (F1)ignored their previous pledge.13 At the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house; and not merely idle, but also they become (C1)gossips and (C2)busybodies, talking about (C3)things not proper to mention.14 Therefore, I want younger widows to get (C1)married, have children, (C2)manage their households, and (C3)give the enemy no opportunity for reproach;15 for some (C1)have already turned away to follow (C2)Satan.16 If any woman who is a believer (C1)has dependent widows, she must (C2)assist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are actually (C3)widows.

Concerning Elders

17 (C1)The elders who (C2)lead well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who (C3)work hard (F1)at preaching and teaching.18 For the Scripture says, "(C1)YOU SHALL NOT MUZZLE THE OX WHILE IT IS THRESHING," and "(C2)The laborer is worthy of his wages."19 Do not accept an accusation against an (C1)elder except on the basis of (C2)two or three witnesses.20 Those who continue in sin, (C1)rebuke in the presence of all, (C2)so that the rest also will be fearful of sinning.21 (C1)I solemnly exhort you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality.22 (C1)Do not lay hands upon anyone too quickly and (F1)thereby share (C2)responsibility for the sins of others; keep yourself (F2)free from sin.<
