Matthew 17
Chapter 17
The Transfiguration
1 After six days(a) Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and led them up on a high mountain by themselves.(b) 2 He was transformed[a] in front of them, and His face shone like the sun. Even His clothes became as white as the light.(c) 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him.
4 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it's good for us to be here! If You want, I will make[b] three tabernacles here: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."(d)
5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud covered[c] them, and a voice from the cloud said:
This is My beloved Son.
I take delight in Him.
Listen to Him!(e)
6 When the disciples(f) heard it, they fell facedown and were terrified.
7 Then Jesus came up, touched them, and said, "Get up; don't be afraid." (g) 8 When they looked up they saw no one except Him[d]—Jesus alone. 9 As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them,(h) "Don't tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised[e] from the dead."
10 So the disciples questioned Him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"(i)
11 "Elijah is coming[f] and will restore everything," He replied.[g](j) 12 "But I tell you: Elijah has already come, and they didn't recognize him. On the contrary, they did whatever they pleased to him. In the same way the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." [h](k) 13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist.
The Power of Faith over a Demon
14 When they reached the crowd,(l) a man approached and knelt down before Him. 15 "Lord," he said, "have mercy on my son, because he has seizures[i] and suffers severely. He often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 I brought him to Your disciples, but they couldn't heal him."(m)
17 Jesus replied, "You unbelieving and rebellious[j] generation! How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to Me." (n) 18 Then Jesus rebuked the demon,[k] and it[l] came out of him,(o) and from that moment[m] the boy was healed.
19 Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
20 "Because of your little faith," He[n] told them. "For I assure you: If you have faith the size of[o] a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,' and it will move.(p) Nothing will be impossible for you. (q) [21 However, this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.] " [p]
The Second Prediction of His Death
22 As(r) they were meeting[q] in Galilee, Jesus told them, "The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men. 23 They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised up." And they were deeply distressed.
Paying the Temple Tax
24 When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the double-drachma tax[r] approached Peter and said, "Doesn't your Teacher pay the double-drachma tax?"(s)
25 "Yes," he said.
When he went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first,[s] "What do you think, Simon? Who do earthly kings collect tariffs or taxes from? From their sons or from strangers?" [t](t)
26 "From strangers," he said.[u]
"Then the sons are free," Jesus told him. 27 "But, so we won't offend them, go to the sea, cast in a fishhook, and take the first fish that you catch. When you open its mouth you'll find a coin.[v] Take it and give it to them for Me and you." (u)
Mark 9
Chapter 9
1 Then He said to them, "I assure you:(a) There are some standing here who will not taste death(b) until they see the kingdom of God come in power." (c)
The Transfiguration
2 After(d) six days(e) Jesus took Peter, James, and John(f) and led them up on a high mountain(g) by themselves to be alone. He was transformed[a](h) in front of them, 3 and His clothes(i) became dazzling—extremely white(j) as no launderer on earth could whiten(k) them. 4 Elijah(l) appeared to them with Moses,(m) and they were talking with Jesus.
5 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi,(n) it's good(o) for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles:(p) one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"— 6 because he did not know what he should say,(q) since they were terrified.(r)
7 A cloud(s) appeared, overshadowing(t) them, and a voice(u) came from the cloud:(v)
This is My beloved(w) Son;(x)
listen to Him!(y)
8 Then suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus alone.
9 As(z) they were coming down from the mountain,(aa) He ordered them to tell no one what they had seen(ab) until the Son of Man(ac) had risen(ad) from the dead.(ae) 10 They kept this word(af) to themselves, discussing what "rising from the dead" meant.
11 Then they began to question Him, "Why do the scribes(ag) say that Elijah must come first?"(ah)
12 "Elijah does come first and restores(ai) everything," (aj) He replied. "How then is it written(ak) about the Son of Man that He must suffer(al) many things and be treated with contempt?(am) 13 But I tell you that Elijah really has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written(an) about him."
The Power of Faith over a Demon
14 When(ao) they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes disputing(ap) with them. 15 All of a sudden, when the whole crowd saw Him, they were amazed[b] and ran to greet Him. 16 Then He asked them, "What are you arguing with them about?"
17 Out of the crowd, one man answered Him, "Teacher,(aq) I brought my son to You. He has a spirit(ar) that makes him unable to speak.(as) 18 Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't."
19 He replied to them, "You unbelieving(at) generation! How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to Me." 20 So they brought him to Him. When the spirit saw Him, it immediately convulsed the boy. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 "How long has this been happening to him?" Jesus asked his father.
"From childhood," he said. 22 "And many times it has thrown him into fire or water to destroy(au) him. But if You can do anything, have compassion(av) on us and help us."
23 Then Jesus said to him, "‘If You can'? [c][d] Everything is possible(aw) to the one who believes." (ax)
24 Immediately the father of the boy cried out, "I do believe! Help my unbelief."
25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly coming together, He rebuked(ay) the unclean(az) spirit, saying to it, "You mute and deaf(ba) spirit,[e] I command you: come out of him and never enter him again!"
26 Then it came out, shrieking and convulsing(bb) him[f] violently. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, "He's dead." 27 But Jesus, taking him by the hand, raised him,(bc) and he stood up.
28 After He went into a house, His disciples asked Him privately, "Why couldn't we drive it out?"
29 And He told them, "This kind can come out by nothing but prayer(bd) [and fasting]." [g](be)
The Second Prediction of His Death
30 Then(bf) they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but He did not want anyone to know it.(bg) 31 For He was teaching(bh) His disciples and telling them, "The Son of Man(bi) is being betrayed[h] into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after He is killed, He will rise(bj) three days later." (bk) 32 But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him.(bl)
Who is the Greatest?
33 Then(bm) they came to Capernaum.(bn) When He was in the house,(bo) He asked them, "What were you arguing about on the way?" (bp) 34 But they were silent,(bq) because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest.(br) 35 Sitting down, He called the Twelve(bs) and said to them, "If anyone wants to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all." (bt) 36 Then He took a child,(bu) had him stand among them, and taking him in His arms, He said to them, 37 "Whoever welcomes[i] one little child such as this in My name(bv) welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me, but Him who sent(bw) Me." (bx)
In His Name
38 John(by) said to Him, "Teacher,(bz) we saw someone[j] driving out demons(ca) in Your name,(cb) and we tried to stop him because he wasn't following us."(cc)
39 "Don't stop him," said Jesus, "because there is no one who will perform a miracle(cd) in My name who can soon afterward speak evil of Me. 40 For whoever is not against us is for us.(ce) 41 And whoever gives you a cup of water to drink(cf) because of My name,[k] since you belong to the Messiah(cg)—I assure you:(ch) He will never lose his reward. (ci)
Warnings from Jesus
42 "But whoever causes the downfall of one of these little ones who believe in Me(cj)—it would be better for him if a heavy millstone [l](ck) were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes your downfall, cut it off.(cl) It is better for you to enter life maimed(cm) than to have two hands and go to hell—the unquenchable fire, (cn) [44 where
Their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched.

49 For everyone will be salted with fire. [r](cw)[s] 50 Salt is good, but if the salt should lose its flavor, how can you make it salty?(cx) Have salt(cy) among yourselves and be at peace(cz) with one another."
Luke 9:28-62
Chapter 9
28 About eight days after these words,(an) He took along Peter, John, and James(ao) and went up on the mountain to pray.(ap) 29 As He was praying, the appearance of His face changed,(aq) and His clothes became dazzling white.(ar) 30 Suddenly, two men were talking with Him—Moses and Elijah. 31 They appeared in glory and were speaking of His death,[j] which He was about to accomplish in Jerusalem.
32 Peter and those with him were in a deep sleep,[k](as) and when they became fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men who were standing with Him. 33 As the two men were departing from Him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master,(at) it's good for us to be here! Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah"—not knowing what he said.(au)
34 While he was saying this, a cloud appeared and overshadowed(av) them. They became afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 Then a voice came from the cloud,(aw) saying:
This is My Son,(ax) the Chosen One;[l](ay)
listen to Him!(az)
36 After the voice had spoken, only Jesus was found. They kept silent, and in those days told no one what they had seen.
The Power of Faith over a Demon
37 The next day,(ba) when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 Just then a man from the crowd cried out, "Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, because he's my only child.(bb) 39 Often a spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth;[m] wounding[n] him, it hardly ever leaves him. 40 I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn't."(bc)
41 Jesus replied, "You unbelieving and rebellious[o] generation!(bd) How long will I be with you and put up with you?(be) Bring your son here."
42 As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, cured the boy,(bf) and gave him back to his father.(bg) 43 And they were all astonished at the greatness of God.(bh)
The Second Prediction of His Death
While everyone was amazed at all the things He was doing,(bi) He told His disciples, 44 "Let these words sink in:[p] The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men." (bj)
45 But they did not understand this statement;(bk) it was concealed from them so that they could not grasp it,(bl) and they were afraid to ask Him about it.[q]
Who Is the Greatest?
46 Then an argument started among them about who would be the greatest of them.(bm) 47 But Jesus, knowing the thoughts of their hearts,(bn) took a little child and had him stand next to Him. 48 He told them, "Whoever welcomes[r] this little child in My name welcomes Me. And whoever welcomes Me welcomes Him who sent Me.(bo) For whoever is least among you—this one is great." (bp)
In His Name
49 John responded,(bq) "Master, we saw someone driving out demons in Your name,(br) and we tried to stop him because he does not follow us."(bs)
50 "Don't stop him," Jesus told him, "because whoever is not against you is for you." [s](bt)
The Journey to Jerusalem
51 When the days were coming to a close for Him to be taken up,[t](bu) He determined[u](bv) to journey to Jerusalem.(bw) 52 He sent messengers ahead of Him,(bx) and on the way they entered a village of the Samaritans(by) to make preparations for Him. 53 But they did not welcome Him, because He determined to journey to Jerusalem.(bz) 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?"[v](ca)
55 But He turned and rebuked them,[w] 56 and they went to another village.
Following Jesus
57 As they were traveling on the road someone said to Him,(cb) "I will follow You wherever You go!"
58 Jesus told him, "Foxes have dens, and birds of the sky[x] have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head." 59 Then He said to another, "Follow Me."
"Lord," he said, "first let me go bury my father."[y]
60 But He told him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and spread the news of the kingdom of God." (cc)
61 Another also said, "I will follow You, Lord, but first let me go and say good-bye to those at my house."(cd)
62 But Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
