Esther 9-10

Chapter 9

The Jews Destroy Their Enemies

1 Now (C1)in the twelfth month (that is, the month Adar), on (C2)the thirteenth (F1)day, (C3)when the king's command and edict were to be put into effect, on the day when the enemies of the Jews hoped to gain the mastery over them, it turned out to the contrary so that the Jews themselves gained mastery over those who hated them.2 (C1)The Jews assembled in their cities throughout the provinces of King Ahasuerus to (F1)attack those who sought (F2)to harm them; and no one could stand against them, (C2)because the dread of them had fallen on all the peoples.3 Even all the officials of the provinces, (C1)the satraps, the governors, and those who were doing the king's business were supporting the Jews, because the dread of Mordecai had fallen on them.4 For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and the news about him spread throughout the provinces; for the man Mordecai (C1)became greater and greater.5 So (C1)the Jews struck all their enemies with (F1)the sword, killing and destroying; and they did as they pleased to those who hated them.6 At the citadel in Susa the Jews killed and eliminated five hundred men,7 and they killed Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,8 Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha,9 Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vaizatha,10 (C1)the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Jews' enemy; but (C2)they did not lay their hands on the plunder.

11 On that day the number of those who were killed at the citadel in Susa (F1)was reported to the king.12 And the king said to Queen Esther, "The Jews have killed and eliminated five hundred men and the ten sons of Haman at the citadel in Susa. What have they done in the rest of the king's provinces! (C1)Now what is your request? It shall also be granted you. And what is your further wish? It shall also be done."13 Then Esther said, "If it pleases the king, (C1)let tomorrow also be granted to the Jews who are in Susa to do according to the edict of today; and let Haman's ten sons be hanged on the wooden gallows."14 So the king commanded that it was to be done so; and an edict was issued in Susa, and Haman's ten sons were hanged.15 The Jews who were in Susa assembled also on the fourteenth day of the month Adar and killed (C1)three hundred men in Susa, but (C2)they did not lay their hands on the plunder.

16 Now (C1)the rest of the Jews who were in the king's provinces (C2)assembled, to defend their lives and (F1)rid themselves of their enemies, and to kill seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they did not lay their hands on the plunder.17 This was done on (C1)the thirteenth day of the month Adar, and (C2)on the fourteenth (F1)day they rested and made it a day of feasting and rejoicing.

18 But the Jews who were in Susa (C1)assembled on the thirteenth and (C2)the fourteenth (F1)of the same month, and they rested on the fifteenth (F1)day and made it a day of feasting and rejoicing.19 Therefore the Jews of the rural areas, who live in (C1)the rural towns, make the fourteenth day of the month Adar a (F1)(C2)holiday for rejoicing and feasting and (C3)sending portions of food to one another.

The Feast of Purim Instituted

20 Then Mordecai recorded these events, and he sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far,21 obliging them to celebrate the fourteenth day of the month Adar, and the fifteenth day (F1)of the same month, annually,22 because on those days the Jews (F1)rid themselves of their enemies, and it was a month which was (C1)turned for them from grief into joy, and from mourning into a (F2)holiday; that they were to make them days of feasting and rejoicing, and (C2)sending portions of food to one another, and gifts to the poor.

23 So the Jews undertook what they had started to do, and what Mordecai had written to them.24 For Haman the son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the adversary of all the Jews, had schemed against the Jews to eliminate them, and (C1)had cast Pur, that is the lot, to disturb them and eliminate them.25 But (C1)when it came (F1)to the king's attention, he commanded by letter (C2)that his wicked scheme which he had devised against the Jews (C3)was to return on his own head, and that he and his sons were to be hanged on the wooden gallows.26 Therefore they called these days Purim after the name of (F1)Pur. (F2)And (C1)because of the instructions in this letter, both what they had seen in this regard and what had happened to them,27 the Jews established and (F1)made a custom for themselves, their (F2)descendants, and for (C1)all those who allied themselves with them, so that (F3)they would not fail (C2)to celebrate these two days according to their (F4)regulation and according to their appointed time annually.28 So these days were to be remembered and celebrated throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city; and these days of Purim were not to (F1)be neglected by the Jews, or their memory (F2)fade from their (F3)descendants.

29 Then Queen Esther, (C1)daughter of Abihail, with Mordecai the Jew, wrote with full authority to confirm (C2)this second letter about Purim.30 He sent letters to all the Jews, (C1)to the 127 provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, namely, words of peace and truth,31 to establish these days of Purim at their appointed times, just as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had established for them, and just as they had established for themselves and for their (F1)descendants, with (F2)instructions (C1)for their times of fasting and their mourning.32 The command of Esther established these (F1)customs for (C1)Purim, and it was written in the book.

Chapter 10

Mordecai's Greatness

1 Now King Ahasuerus imposed a tax on the land and the (C1)coastlands of the sea.2 And every accomplishment of his authority and power, and the full account of the greatness of Mordecai (C1)with which the king honored him, are they not written in (C2)the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Media and Persia?3 For Mordecai the Jew was (C1)second only to King Ahasuerus, and great among the Jews and in favor with his many kinsmen, (C2)one who sought the good of his people and one who spoke for the welfare of his entire (F1)nation.

Psalms 107:23-43

Chapter 107

23 Those who (C1)go down to the sea in ships,
Who do business on great waters;

24 They have seen the works of the LORD,
And His (F1)wonders in the deep.

25 For He (C1)spoke and raised a (C2)stormy wind,
Which (C3)lifted the waves (F1)of the sea.

26 They rose up to the heavens, they went down to the depths;
Their soul (C1)melted away in their misery.

27 They reeled and (C1)staggered like a drunken person,
And (F1)were at their wits' end.

28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
And He brought them out of their distresses.

29 He (C1)caused the storm to be still,
So that the waves (F1)of the sea were hushed.

30 Then they were glad because they were quiet,
So He guided them to their desired harbor.

31 (C1)They shall give thanks to the LORD for His mercy,
And for His (F1)(C2)wonders to the sons of mankind!

32 They shall also (C1)exalt Him (C2)in the congregation of the people,
And (C3)praise Him at the seat of the elders.

33 He (C1)turns rivers into a (F1)wilderness,
And springs of water into a thirsty ground;

34 And a (C1)fruitful land into a (C2)salt waste,
Because of the wickedness of those who dwell in it.

35 He (C1)turns a (F1)wilderness into a pool of water,
And a dry land into springs of water;

36 And He has the hungry live there,
So that they may establish (F1)(C1)an inhabited city,

37 And sow fields and (C1)plant vineyards,
And (F1)gather a fruitful harvest.

38 He also blesses them and they (C1)multiply greatly,
And He (C2)does not let their cattle decrease.

39 When they (C1)become few and (C2)lowly
Because of oppression, misery, and sorrow,

40 He (C1)pours contempt upon noblemen
And (C2)makes them wander (C3)in a pathless wasteland.

41 But He (C1)sets the needy (F1)securely on high, away from affliction,
And (C2)makes his families like a flock.

42 The (C1)upright see it and are glad;
But all (C2)injustice shuts its mouth.

43 Who is (C1)wise? He is to pay attention to these things,
And consider the (C2)mercy of the LORD.

Revelation 16

Chapter 16

The Bowls of Wrath

1 Then I heard a loud voice from (C1)the (F1)temple, saying to the (C2)seven angels, "Go and (C3)pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God."

2 So the first angel went and poured out his bowl (C1)on the earth; and a harmful and painful (C2)sore (F1)afflicted the people (C3)who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

3 The second angel poured out his bowl (C1)into the sea, and it became blood like that of a dead man; and every living (F1)thing in the sea died.

4 Then the third angel poured out his bowl into the (C1)rivers and the springs of waters; and they (C2)became blood.5 And I heard the angel of the waters saying, "(C1)Righteous are You, (C2)the One who is and who was, O (C3)Holy One, because You (C4)judged these things;6 for they poured out (C1)the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them (C2)blood to drink. They (F1)deserve it."7 And I heard (C1)the altar saying, "Yes, (C2)Lord God, the Almighty, (C3)true and righteous are Your judgments."

8 And the fourth angel poured out his bowl upon (C1)the sun, (C2)and it was given power to scorch people with fire.9 And the people were scorched with (F1)fierce heat; and they (C1)blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they (C2)did not repent so as to (C3)give Him glory.

10 And the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the (C1)throne of the beast, and his kingdom became (C2)darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain,11 and they (C1)blasphemed the (C2)God of heaven because of their pain and their (C3)sores; and they (C4)did not repent of their deeds.

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the (C1)great river, the Euphrates; and (C2)its water was dried up, so that (C3)the way would be prepared for the kings (C4)from the (F1)east.

Har-Magedon (Armageddon)

13 And I saw coming out of the mouth of the (C1)dragon, and out of the mouth of the (C2)beast, and out of the mouth of the (C3)false prophet, three (C4)unclean spirits like (C5)frogs;14 for they are (C1)spirits of demons, (C2)performing signs, which go out to the kings of the (C3)entire (F1)world, to (C4)gather them together for the war of the (C5)great day of God, the Almighty.15 ("Behold, (C1)I am coming like a thief. (C2)Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, (C3)so that he will not walk about naked and people will not see his shame.")16 And they (C1)gathered them together to the place which (C2)in Hebrew is called (C3)Har-Magedon.

The Seventh Bowl of Wrath

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon (C1)the air, and a (C2)loud voice came out of the (F1)(C3)temple from the throne, saying, "(C4)It is done."18 And there were flashes of (C1)lightning and sounds and peals of thunder; and there was (C2)a great earthquake, (C3)such as there had not been since mankind came to be upon the earth, so great an earthquake was it, and so mighty.19 (C1)The great city (F1)was split into three parts, and the cities of the (F2)nations fell. (C2)Babylon the great was (C3)remembered in the sight of God, to give her (C4)the cup of the wine of (F3)His fierce wrath.20 And (C1)every island fled, and no mountains were found.21 And (C1)huge (F1)hailstones, weighing about (F2)a talent each, (*)came down from heaven upon people; and people (C2)blasphemed God because of the (C3)plague of the hail, because (F3)the hailstone plague (*)was extremely (F4)severe.
