Nehemiah 13
Chapter 13
Foreigners Excluded
1 On that day the Book of Moses was (C1)read aloud (F1)as the people listened; and there was found written in it that (C2)no Ammonite or Moabite was ever to enter the assembly of God,2 because they did not meet the sons of Israel with bread and water, but (C1)hired Balaam against them to curse them. However, (C2)our God turned the curse into a blessing.3 So when they heard the Law, (C1)they excluded (C2)all foreigners from Israel.
Tobiah Expelled and the Temple Cleansed
4 Now prior to this, Eliashib the priest, (C1)who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, being (F1)related to (C2)Tobiah,5 had prepared a large (F1)room for him, where previously they used to put the grain offerings, the frankincense, the utensils and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil (C1)prescribed for the Levites, the singers, and the gatekeepers, and the (F2)contributions for the priests.6 But during all this time I was not in Jerusalem, for in (C1)the thirty-second year of (C2)Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had come to the king. After some time, however, I requested a leave of absence from the king,7 and I came to Jerusalem and (F1)learned about the evil that Eliashib had committed for (F2)Tobiah, (C1)by preparing a (F3)room for him in the courtyards of the house of God.8 It was very displeasing to me, so I (C1)threw all of Tobiah's household articles out of the room.9 Then I gave an order, and (C1)they cleansed the rooms; and I returned the utensils of the house of God there with the grain offering and the frankincense.
Tithes Restored
10 I also (F1)discovered that (C1)the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so the Levites and the singers who performed the service had (F2)gone away, (C2)each to his own field.11 So I (F1)(C1)reprimanded the officials and said, "(C2)Why has the house of God been neglected?" Then I gathered them together and stationed them at their posts.12 All Judah then brought (C1)the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses.13 To be in charge of the storehouses, I appointed Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah from the Levites, and in addition to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for (C1)they were considered reliable, and it was (F1)their task to distribute to their kinsmen.14 (C1)Remember me for this, my God, and do not wipe out my loyal deeds which I have performed for the house of my God and its services.
Sabbath Restored
15 In those days I saw in Judah people who were treading wine presses (C1)on the Sabbath, and bringing in sacks of grain and loading them on donkeys, as well as wine, grapes, figs, and every kind of load, (C2)and they were bringing them into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. So (C3)I admonished them on the day they sold food.16 Also people of Tyre were living (F1)there who imported fish and all kinds of merchandise, and sold them to the sons of Judah on the Sabbath, even in Jerusalem.17 Then (C1)I (F1)reprimanded the nobles of Judah and said to them, "What is this evil thing that you are doing, (F2)by profaning the Sabbath day?18 "(C1)Did your fathers not do the same, so that our God brought on us and on this city all this trouble? Yet you are adding to the wrath against Israel by profaning the Sabbath."
19 And (C1)it came about that just as it became dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered that the doors be shut, (F1)and that they were not to open them until after the Sabbath. Then I stationed some of my servants at the gates so that no load would enter on the Sabbath day.20 Once or twice the traders and merchants of every kind of merchandise spent the night outside Jerusalem.21 Then (C1)I warned them and said to them, "Why do you spend the night in front of the wall? If you do so again, I will (F1)use force against you." From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath.22 And I ordered the Levites that (C1)they were to purify themselves and come as gatekeepers to sanctify the Sabbath day. For this also (C2)remember me, my God, and have compassion on me according to the greatness of Your mercy.
Mixed Marriages Forbidden
23 In those days I also saw that the Jews had (F1)(C1)married women from (C2)Ashdod, (C3)Ammon, and Moab.24 As for their children, half spoke in the language of Ashdod, and none of them knew how to speak the language of Judah, but (F1)only the language of his own people.25 So (C1)I quarreled with them and cursed them, and (C2)struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and (C3)made them swear by God, "You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take any of their daughters for your sons or for yourselves.26 "(C1)Did Solomon the king of Israel not sin regarding these things? (C2)Yet among the many nations there was no king like him, and (C3)he was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel; yet the foreign women caused even him to sin.27 "Has it not then been reported about you that you have committed all this great evil (C1)by acting unfaithfully against our God, by (F1)marrying foreign women?"28 Even one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, became a son-in-law of (C1)Sanballat the Horonite, so I chased him away from me.29 (C1)Remember them, my God, (F1)because they have defiled the priesthood and the (C2)covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.
30 (C1)So I purified them from everything foreign, and assigned duties to the priests and the Levites, each in his work,31 and I arranged (C1)for the delivery of wood at appointed times and for the first fruits. (C2)Remember me, my God, for good.
Psalms 104:24-35
Chapter 104
24 LORD, how (C1)many are Your works!
(F1)In (C2)wisdom You have made them all;
The (C3)earth is full of Your (F2)possessions.
25 (F1)There is the (C1)sea, great and (F2)broad,
In which are swarms without number,
Animals both small and great.
26 The (C1)ships move along there,
And (F1)(C2)Leviathan, which You have formed to have fun in it.
27 They all (C1)wait for You
To (C2)give them their food in (F1)due season.
28 You give to them, they gather it up;
You (C1)open Your hand, they are satisfied with good.
29 You (C1)hide Your face, they are terrified;
You (C2)take away their breath, they perish
And (C3)return to their dust.
30 You send forth Your (F1)(C1)Spirit, they are created;
And You renew the face of the ground.
31 May the (C1)glory of the LORD endure forever;
May the LORD (C2)rejoice in His works;
32 (F1)He (C1)looks at the earth, and it (C2)trembles;
He (C3)touches the mountains, and they smoke.
33 (F1)I will sing to the LORD (F2)(C1)as long as I live;
(F1)I will (C2)sing praise to my God (F3)while I have my being.
34 May my (C1)praise be pleasing to Him;
As for me, I shall (C2)rejoice in the LORD.
35 May sinners be (C1)removed from the earth
And may the (C2)wicked be no more.
(C3)Bless the LORD, my soul.
(F1)(C4)Praise (F2)the LORD!
Revelation 10
Chapter 10
The Angel and the Little Scroll
1 I saw another (C1)strong angel (C2)coming down from heaven, clothed with a cloud; and the (C3)rainbow was on his head, and (C4)his face was like the sun, and his (C5)feet like pillars of fire;2 and he had in his hand a (C1)little scroll, which was open. He placed (C2)his right foot on the sea and his left on the land;3 and he cried out with a loud voice, (C1)as when a lion roars; and when he had cried out, the (C2)seven peals of thunder (F1)uttered their voices.4 When the seven peals of thunder had spoken, (C1)I was about to write; and I (C2)heard a voice from heaven, saying, "(C3)Seal up the things which the seven peals of thunder have spoken, and do not write them."5 Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land (C1)raised his right hand to heaven,6 (C1)and swore by (C2)Him who lives forever and ever, (C3)who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that (C4)there will no longer be a delay,7 but in the days of the voice of the (C1)seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then (C2)the mystery of God is finished, as He announced to His servants the prophets.
8 Then (C1)the voice which I heard from heaven, I heard again speaking with me, and saying, "Go, take (C2)the scroll which is open in the hand of the angel who (C2)stands on the sea and on the land."9 And I went to the angel, telling him to give me the little scroll. And he (*)said to me, "(C1)Take it and eat it; it will make your stomach bitter, but in your mouth it will be sweet as honey."10 I took the little scroll from the angel's hand and ate it, and in my mouth it was sweet as honey; and when I had eaten it, my stomach was made bitter.11 And (C1)they (*)said to me, "You must (C2)prophesy again concerning (C3)many peoples, nations, languages, and (C4)kings."
