Chapter 12

Lord of the Sabbath

1 At that time Jesus passed through the grainfields on the Sabbath.(a) His disciples(b) were hungry and began to pick and eat some heads of grain. 2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to Him, "Look, Your disciples are doing what is not lawful(c) to do on the Sabbath!"

3 He said to them, "Haven't you read what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry— 4 how he entered the house of God, and they ate[a] the sacred bread, which is not lawful for him or for those with him to eat, but only for the priests?(d) 5 Or haven't you read in the Law[b] that on Sabbath days the priests in the temple violate the Sabbath and are innocent?(e) 6 But I tell you that something greater than the temple is here!(f) 7 If you had known what this means: I desire mercy and not sacrifice , (g)[c] you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." (h)

The Man with the Paralyzed Hand

9 Moving on from there, He entered their synagogue.(i) 10 There He saw a man who had a paralyzed hand. And in order to accuse Him they asked Him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?"(j)

11 But He said to them, "What man among you, if he had a sheep[d] that fell into a pit on the Sabbath, wouldn't take hold of it and lift it out?(k) 12 A man is worth far more than a sheep,(l) so it is lawful to do what is good on the Sabbath."

13 Then He told the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out, and it was restored,(m) as good as the other. 14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted against Him, how they might destroy Him.(n)

The Servant of the Lord

15 When Jesus became aware of this, He withdrew from there. Huge crowds[e] followed Him, and He healed them all.(o) 16 He warned them not to make Him known,(p) 17 so that what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

18  Here is My Servant whom I have chosen,
My beloved in whom My soul delights;
I will put My Spirit on Him,
and He will proclaim justice to the nations. (q)
19  He will not argue or shout,
and no one will hear His voice in the streets.
20  He will not break a bruised reed,
and He will not put out a smoldering wick,
until He has led justice to victory. [f]
21  The nations will put their hope in His name. (r)[g]

Chapter 3

The Man with the Paralyzed Hand

1 Now(a) He entered the synagogue(b) again, and a man was there who had a paralyzed(c) hand. 2 In order to accuse(d) Him, they were watching Him closely(e) to see whether He would heal(f) him on the Sabbath.(g) 3 He told the man with the paralyzed hand, "Stand before us." [a] 4 Then He said to them, "Is it lawful(h) on the Sabbath to do what is good(i) or to do what is evil,(j) to save life(k) or to kill?" (l) But they were silent.(m) 5 After looking around at them with anger(n) and sorrow at the hardness(o) of their hearts, He told the man, "Stretch out your hand." So he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.(p) 6 Immediately the Pharisees(q) went out and started plotting(r) with the Herodians(s) against Him, how they might destroy(t) Him.

Ministering to the Multitude

7 Jesus(u) departed with His disciples to the sea, and a large crowd followed from Galilee,(v) Judea,(w) 8 Jerusalem,(x) Idumea, beyond the Jordan,(y) and around Tyre(z) and Sidon.(aa) The large crowd came to Him because they heard about everything He was doing. 9 Then He told His disciples to have a small boat(ab) ready for Him, so the crowd would not crush Him. 10 Since He had healed(ac) many, all who had diseases were pressing toward Him to touch(ad) Him. 11 Whenever the unclean(ae) spirits(af) saw Him, those possessed fell down(ag) before Him and cried out, "You are the Son of God!"(ah) 12 And He would strongly warn(ai) them not to make Him known.(aj)

The 12 Apostles

13 Then(ak) He went up the mountain(al) and summoned those He wanted, and they came to Him. 14 He also appointed 12—He also named them apostles[b](am)—to be with Him, to send them out to preach,(an) 15 and to have authority to[c] drive out demons.

16 He appointed the Twelve:[d](ao)

To Simon,(ap) He gave the name Peter;(aq)
17 and to James(ar) the son of Zebedee,(as)
and to his brother John,(at)
He gave the name "Boanerges"
(that is, "Sons of Thunder"(au));
18 Andrew;(av)
Philip(aw) and Bartholomew;
Matthew(ax) and Thomas;(ay)
James the son of Alphaeus,
and Thaddaeus;
Simon the Zealot,[e]
19 and Judas Iscariot,[f](az)
who also betrayed Him.

A House Divided

20 Then He went home, and the crowd gathered again so that they were not even able to eat.[g] 21 When His family(ba) heard this, they set out to restrain Him, because they said, "He's out of His mind."(bb)

22 The scribes(bc) who had come down from Jerusalem said, "He has Beelzebul(bd) in Him!" and, "He drives out(be) demons(bf) by the ruler(bg) of the demons!"(bh)

23 So He summoned(bi) them and spoke to them in parables: (bj) "How can Satan(bk) drive out Satan?(bl) 24 If a kingdom(bm) is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. 26 And if Satan rebels against himself and is divided, he cannot stand but is finished! [h]

27 "On the other hand, no one can enter a strong man's house and rob his possessions unless he first ties up(bn) the strong man. Then he will rob his house. 28 I assure you: People will be forgiven for all sins[i] and whatever blasphemies(bo) they may blaspheme. 29 But whoever blasphemes(bp) against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness,(bq) but is guilty(br) of an eternal sin" [j](bs) 30 because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit."(bt)

True Relationships

31 Then(bu) His mother(bv) and His brothers(bw) came, and standing outside, they sent word to Him and called Him. 32 A crowd was sitting around Him and told Him, "Look, Your mother, Your brothers,(bx) and Your sisters[k] are outside asking for You."

33 He replied to them, "Who are My mother and My brothers?" 34 And looking about at those who were sitting in a circle around Him, He said, "Here are My mother and My brothers!(by) 35 Whoever does the will of God(bz) is My brother and sister and mother."

Chapter 6

Lord of the Sabbath

1 On a Sabbath,[a] He passed through the grainfields.(a) His disciples were picking heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?"

3 Jesus answered them, "Haven't you read what David and those who were with him did when he was hungry— 4 how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the sacred bread, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?(b) He even gave some to those who were with him." (c) 5 Then He told them, "The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

The Man with the Paralyzed Hand

6 On another Sabbath(d) He entered the synagogue and was teaching. A man was there whose right hand was paralyzed. 7 The scribes and Pharisees were watching Him closely,(e) to see if He would heal on the Sabbath, so that they could find a charge against Him.(f) 8 But He knew their thoughts(g) and told the man with the paralyzed hand, "Get up and stand here." [b] So he got up and stood there. 9 Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do what is good or to do what is evil, to save life or to destroy it?" (h) 10 After looking around at them all,(i) He told him, "Stretch out your hand." (j) He did so, and his hand was restored.[c] 11 They, however, were filled with rage and started discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The 12 Apostles

12 During those days He went out to the mountain to pray(k) and spent all night in prayer to God. 13 When daylight came, He summoned His disciples,(l) and He chose 12 of them—He also named them apostles:(m)

14 Simon, whom He also named Peter,
and Andrew his brother;
James and John;
Philip and Bartholomew;
15 Matthew and Thomas;(n)
James the son of Alphaeus,
and Simon called the Zealot;
16 Judas the son of James,
and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Teaching and Healing

17 After coming down with them, He stood on a level place with a large crowd of His disciples and a great number of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon.(o) 18 They came to hear Him and to be healed of their diseases; and those tormented by unclean spirits were made well. 19 The whole crowd was trying to touch Him,(p) because power was coming out from Him and healing them all.(q)

The Beatitudes

20 Then looking up at[d] His disciples, He said:(r)

You who are poor are blessed,
because the kingdom of God is yours.
21 You who are now hungry are blessed,
because you will be filled.
You who now weep are blessed,
because you will laugh.
22 You are blessed when people hate you,
when they exclude you,(s) insult you,
and slander your name as evil (t)
because of the Son of Man. (u)

23 "Rejoice in that day and leap for joy! Take note—your reward is great in heaven, for this is the way their ancestors used to treat the prophets. (v)

Woe to the Self-Satisfied

24 But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your comfort.
25 Woe to you who are now full,
for you will be hungry.
Woe to you[e] who are now laughing,
for you will mourn and weep.
26 Woe to you [f]
when all people speak well of you,
for this is the way their ancestors
used to treat the false prophets. (w)

Love Your Enemies

27 "But I say to you who listen: Love your enemies, do what is good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(x) 29 If anyone hits you on the cheek,(y) offer the other also. And if anyone takes away your coat, don't hold back your shirt either. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and from one who takes your things, don't ask for them back. 31 Just as you want others to do for you, do the same for them.(z) 32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.(aa) 33 If you do what is good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you?(ab) Even sinners lend to sinners to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High.(ac) For He is gracious to the ungrateful and evil. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. (ad)

Do Not Judge

37 "Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(ae) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(af) 38 Give, and it will be given to you; a good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over—will be poured into your lap.(ag) For with the measure you use,[g] it will be measured back to you." (ah)

39 He also told them a parable: "Can the blind guide the blind? Won't they both fall into a pit?(ai) 40 A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher. (aj)

41 "Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but don't notice the log in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,' when you yourself don't see the log in your eye? Hypocrite! First take the log out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck in your brother's eye.

A Tree and Its Fruit

43 "A good tree doesn't produce bad fruit; on the other hand, a bad tree doesn't produce good fruit.(ak) 44 For each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs aren't gathered from thornbushes, or grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 A good man produces good out of the good storeroom of his heart. An evil man produces evil out of the evil storeroom, for his mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.

The Two Foundations

46 "Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,' and don't do the things I say?(al) 47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to Me, hears My words, and acts on them:(am) 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep[h] and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn't shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river crashed against it, and immediately it collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great!" (an)
