Nehemiah 5:1-7:4
Chapter 5
Charging Interest Abolished
1 Now (C1)there was a great outcry of the people and of their wives against their (C2)Jewish brothers.2 For there were those who said, "We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let's (C1)get grain so that we may eat and live."3 And there were others who said, "We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards, and our houses so that we might get grain because of the famine."4 There also were those who said, "We have borrowed money (C1)for the king's tax on our fields and our vineyards.5 "And now (C1)our flesh is like the flesh of our brothers, our children like their children. Yet behold, (C2)we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters are forced into bondage already, and (F1)we are helpless because our fields and vineyards belong to others."
6 Then I was very (C1)angry when I heard their outcry and these words.7 So I thought it over and contended with the nobles and the leading people, and said to them, "(C1)You are lending at interest, each to his brother!" Therefore, I held a great assembly against them.8 And I said to them, "We, according to our ability, (C1)have (F1)redeemed our Jewish brothers who were sold to the nations; now would you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us?" Then they were silent and could not find a word to say.9 So I said, "The thing which you are doing is not good; should you not walk in the fear of our God because of (C1)the taunting of the nations, our enemies?10 "And likewise I, my brothers, and my servants are lending them money and grain. Please, let's (F1)do without this interest.11 "Please, give back to them this very day their fields, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, as well as the hundredth part of the money and of the grain, the new wine, and the oil that you are charging as interest from them."12 Then they said, "We (C1)will give it back and (C2)will require nothing from them; we will do exactly as you say." So I called the priests and made them (C3)take an oath to act in accordance with this (F1)promise.13 I (C1)also shook out the (F1)front of my garment and said, "So may God shake out every person from his house and from his possessions who does not keep this (F2)promise; just so may he be shaken out and emptied." And (C2)all the assembly said, "Amen!" And they praised the LORD. Then the people acted in accordance with this (F2)promise.
Nehemiah's Example
14 Furthermore, since the day that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from (C1)the twentieth year to the (C2)thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes, for twelve years, neither I nor my kinsmen have eaten the governor's food allowance.15 But the previous governors who were before me (F1)laid burdens on the people and took from them bread and wine besides forty shekels of silver; even their servants domineered the people. But I did not do so (C1)because of my fear of God.16 I also (F1)applied myself to the work on this wall; we did not buy any land, and all my servants were gathered there for the work.17 Moreover, (C1)there were at my table 150 Jews and officials, besides those who came to us from the nations that were around us.18 Now (C1)that which was prepared for each day was one ox and six choice sheep; also birds were prepared for me, and every ten days all sorts of wine were provided in abundance. Yet for all this (C2)I did not request the governor's food allowance, because the forced labor was heavy on this people.19 (C1)Remember me, my God, for good, in return for all that I have done for this people.
Chapter 6
The Enemy's Plot
1 Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and to the rest of our enemies that I had rebuilt the wall, and that no breach was left in it, (C1)although at that time I had not installed the doors in the gates,2 Sanballat and Geshem sent a message to me, saying, "Come, let's meet together (F1)at Chephirim in the plain of (C1)Ono." But they were plotting to (F2)harm me.3 So I sent messengers to them, saying, "I am doing a great work and am unable to come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?"4 Then they sent messages to me four times worded in this way, and I answered them with the same wording.5 Then Sanballat sent his servant to me in the same way a fifth time with an open letter in his hand.6 In it was written: "It is reported among the nations, and (F1)Gashmu says, that (C1)you and the Jews intend to rebel; for that reason you are rebuilding the wall. And you are to be their king, according to these reports.7 "You have also appointed prophets to proclaim in Jerusalem concerning (F1)you, 'A king is in Judah!' And now it will be reported to the king according to these reports. So come now, let's consult together."8 Then I sent a message to him saying, "Nothing like these things that you are saying has been done, but you are (C1)inventing them (F1)in your own mind."9 For all of them were trying to frighten us, (F1)thinking, "(F2)They will become discouraged with the work and it will not be done." But now, (C1)God, strengthen my hands.
10 When I entered the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabel, (C1)who was confined at home, he said, "Let's meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let's close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you, and they are coming to kill you at night."11 But I said, "(C1)Should a man like me flee? And who is there like me who would go into the temple (F1)to save his own life? I will not go in."12 Then I realized (F1)that God certainly had not sent him, but he uttered his prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.13 He was hired for this reason, (C1)that I would become frightened and act accordingly and sin, so that they might have an evil report in order that they could taunt me.14 (C1)Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat in accordance with these works of theirs, and also Noadiah (C2)the prophetess and the rest of the prophets, who were trying to frighten me.
The Wall Is Finished
15 So (C1)the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of the month Elul, in fifty-two days.16 (C1)When all our enemies heard about it, and all the nations surrounding us saw it, they (F1)lost their confidence; for (C2)they realized that this work had been accomplished (F2)with the help of our God.17 Also in those days many letters went from the nobles of Judah to Tobiah, and (F1)Tobiah's letters came to them.18 For many in Judah were bound by oath to him because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah.19 Moreover, they were speaking about his good deeds in my presence, and were reporting my words to him. Then Tobiah sent letters to frighten me.
Chapter 7
Census of First Returned Exiles
1 Now when (C1)the wall was rebuilt and I had installed the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites were appointed,2 then I put (C1)Hanani my brother, and (C2)Hananiah the commander of (C3)the citadel, in charge of Jerusalem, for he was (C4)a faithful man and feared God more than many.3 Then I said to them, "The gates of Jerusalem are not to be opened until the sun is hot, and while they are standing guard, the gatekeepers are to (F1)keep the doors shut and bolted. Also appoint guards from the inhabitants of Jerusalem, each at his post, and each in front of his own house."4 Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few and the houses were not built.<
Psalms 99
Chapter 99
Praise to the LORD for His Faithfulness to Israel.
1 (C1)The LORD reigns, (F1)the peoples tremble!
He (C2)sits enthroned above the cherubim, (F2)the earth quakes!
2 The LORD (F1)is (C1)great in Zion,
And He is (C2)exalted above all the peoples.
3 May they praise Your (C1)great and awesome name;
(C2)Holy is (F1)He.
4 The (F1)strength of the King (C1)loves (F2)justice;
You have established (F3)(C2)order;
You have (C3)executed (F2)justice and righteousness in Jacob.
5 (F1)(C1)Exalt the LORD our God
And (C2)worship at His footstool;
(C3)Holy is He.
6 (C1)Moses and Aaron were among His (C2)priests,
And (C1)Samuel was among those who (C3)called on His name;
They (C4)called upon the LORD and He answered them.
7 He (C1)spoke to them in the pillar of cloud;
They (C2)kept His testimonies
And the statute that He gave them.
8 LORD our God, You (C1)answered them;
You were a (C2)forgiving God to them,
And yet an (C3)avenger of their evil deeds.
9 Exalt the LORD our God
And worship at His holy hill,
For the LORD our God is holy.
Revelation 4
Chapter 4
Scene in Heaven
1 After (C1)these things I looked, and behold, (C2)a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, (C3)like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, "(C4)Come up here, and I will (C5)show you what must take place after these things."2 Immediately I was (C1)in the (F1)Spirit; and behold, (C2)a throne was standing in heaven, and (C3)someone was sitting on the throne.3 And He who was sitting was like a (C1)jasper stone and a (C2)sardius in appearance; and there was a (F1)(C3)rainbow around the throne, like an (C4)emerald in appearance.4 (C1)Around the throne were (C2)twenty-four thrones; and upon the thrones I saw (C3)twenty-four elders (C4)sitting, clothed in (C5)white garments, and (C6)golden crowns on their heads.
The Throne and Worship of the Creator
5 Out from the throne (*)came (C1)flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder. And there were (C2)seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are (F1)(C3)the seven spirits of God;6 and before the throne there was something like a (C1)sea of glass, like crystal; and in the (F1)center and (C2)around the throne, (C3)four living creatures (C4)full of eyes in front and behind.7 (C1)The first living creature was like a lion, the second creature like a calf, the third creature had a face like that of a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle.8 And the (C1)four living creatures, each one of them having (C2)six wings, are (C3)full of eyes around and within; and (C4)day and night (F1)they do not cease to say,Copyright © 1960, 1962, 1963, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1995,2020 by The Lockman Foundation
