Obadiah 1:10-21

Chapter 1

10 "Because of (C1)violence to your brother Jacob,
Shame will cover you,
(C2)And you will be eliminated forever.

11 "On the day that you (C1)stood aloof,
On the day that strangers carried off his wealth,
And foreigners entered his gate
And (C2)cast lots for Jerusalem—
(C3)You too were as one of them.

12 "(C1)Do not (F1)gloat over your brother's day,
The day of his misfortune.
And (C2)do not rejoice over the sons of Judah
On the day of their destruction;
Yes, (C3)do not (F2)boast
On the day of their distress.

13 "Do not enter the gate of My people
On the (C1)day of their disaster.
You indeed, do not (F1)gloat over their catastrophe
On the day of their disaster.
And do not (C2)lay a hand on their wealth
On the day of their disaster.

14 "Do not (C1)stand at the crossroads
To eliminate their survivors;
And do not hand over their refugees
On the day of their distress.

The Day of the LORD and the Future

15 "For the (C1)day of the LORD is near for all the nations.
(C2)Just as you have done, it will be done to you.
Your (C3)dealings will return on your own head.

16 "For just as you (C1)drank on (C2)My holy mountain,
All the nations (C3)will drink continually.
They will drink (F1)to the last drop,
And become as if they had never existed.

17 "But on Mount (C1)Zion there will be those who escape,
And it will be holy.
And the house of Jacob will (F1)(C2)possess their (F2)property.

18 "Then the house of Jacob will be a (C1)fire,
And the house of Joseph a flame;
But the house of Esau will be like stubble.
And they will set (F1)them on fire and consume (F1)them,
So that there will be (C2)no survivor of the house of Esau,"
For the LORD has spoken.

19 Then those of the (F1)Negev will (F2)(C1)possess the mountain of Esau,
And those of the (F3)Shephelah the (C2)Philistine plain;
Also, (C3)they will (F2)possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria,
And Benjamin the territory of Gilead.

20 And the exiles of this army of the sons of Israel,
Who are among the Canaanites as far as (C1)Zarephath,
And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad,
Will (F1)possess the (C2)cities of the Negev.

21 (F1)The (C1)deliverers will ascend Mount Zion
To judge the mountain of Esau,
And the (C2)kingdom will be the LORD'S.

Jonah 1-4

Chapter 1

Jonah's Disobedience

1 The word of the LORD came to (C1)Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,2 "Arise, go to (C1)Nineveh, the great city, and (C2)cry out against it, because their (C3)wickedness has come up before Me."3 But Jonah got up to flee to (C1)Tarshish (C2)from the presence of the LORD. So he went down to (C3)Joppa, found a ship that was going to Tarshish, paid the fare, and (F1)boarded it to go with them to Tarshish away from the presence of the LORD.

4 However, the (C1)LORD hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea, so that the ship was about to (F1)break up.5 Then the sailors became afraid and every man cried out to (C1)his (F1)god, and they (C2)hurled the (F2)cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it (F3)for them. But Jonah had gone below into the stern of the ship, had lain down, and fallen sound asleep.6 So the captain approached him and said, "How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, (C1)call on your god! Perhaps your (C2)god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish."

7 And each man said to his mate, "Come, let's (C1)cast lots so that we may (F1)find out on whose account this catastrophe has struck us." So they cast lots, and the (C2)lot fell on Jonah.8 Then they said to him, "(C1)Tell us, now! On whose account has this catastrophe struck us? What is your (C2)occupation, and where do you come from? What is your country, and from what people are you?"9 So he said to them, "I am a (C1)Hebrew, and I (C2)fear the LORD (C3)God of heaven who (C4)made the sea and the dry land."

10 Then the men became extremely afraid, and they said to him, "(F1)How could you do this?" For the men knew that he was (C1)fleeing from the presence of the LORD, because he had told them.11 So they said to him, "What should we do to you so that the sea will become calm (F1)for us?"—for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy.12 And he said to them, "Pick me up and hurl me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm (F1)for you, because I know that (C1)on account of me this great storm has come upon you."13 However, the men (F1)rowed desperately to return to land, but they could not, because the sea was becoming even stormier against them.14 Then they cried out to the (C1)LORD and said, "We earnestly pray, O LORD, do not let us perish on account of this man's life, and do not put innocent blood on us; for (C2)You, LORD, have done as You pleased."

15 So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea, and the sea (C1)stopped its raging.16 Then the men became extremely afraid of the LORD, and they offered a sacrifice to the LORD and made (C1)vows.

17 (F1)And the LORD designated a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the (C1)stomach of the fish for three days and three nights.

Chapter 2

Jonah's Prayer

1 (F1)Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God (C1)from the stomach of the fish,2 and he said,

"I (C1)called out of my distress to the LORD,
And He answered me.
I called for help from the (F1)depth of (C2)Sheol;
You heard my voice.

3 "For You (C1)threw me into the deep,
Into the heart of the seas,
And the current flowed around me.
All Your (C2)breakers and waves passed over me.

4 "So I said, 'I have been (C1)cast out (F1)of Your sight.
Nevertheless I will look again (C2)toward Your holy temple.'

5 "(C1)Water encompassed me to the (F1)point of death.
The (C2)deep flowed around me,
Seaweed was wrapped around my head.

6 "I (C1)descended to the base of the mountains.
The earth with its (C2)bars was around me forever,
But You have (C3)brought up my life from (F1)the pit, LORD my God.

7 "While (F1)I was (C1)fainting away,
I (C2)remembered the LORD,
And my (C3)prayer came to You,
Into (C4)Your holy temple.

8 "Those who (C1)are followers of worthless (F1)idols
Abandon their faithfulness,

9 But I will (C1)sacrifice to You
With a voice of thanksgiving.
That which I have vowed I will (C2)pay.
(C3)Salvation is from the LORD."

10 Then the LORD commanded the (C1)fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.

Chapter 3

Nineveh Repents

1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah the second time, saying,2 "Arise, go to (C1)Nineveh, the great city, and (C2)proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you."3 So Jonah got up and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was (F1)an (C1)exceedingly large city, a three days' walk.4 Then Jonah began to go through the city one day's walk; and he (C1)cried out and said, "Forty more days, and Nineveh will be overthrown."

5 Then the people of Nineveh believed in God; and they called a (C1)fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.6 When the word reached the king of Nineveh, he got up from his throne, removed his robe from himself, (C1)covered himself with sackcloth, and sat on the (F1)dust.7 And he issued a (C1)proclamation, and it said, "In Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles: No person, animal, herd, or flock is to taste anything. They are not to eat, or drink water.8 "But every person and animal must be covered with sackcloth; and people are to (C1)call on God vehemently, and they are to (C2)turn, each one from his evil way, and from the violence which is in their hands.9 "(C1)Who knows, God may turn and relent, and turn from His burning anger so that we will not perish."

10 When God saw their deeds, that they (C1)turned from their evil way, then (C2)God relented of the disaster which He had declared He would (F1)bring on them. So He did not do it.

Chapter 4

Jonah's Displeasure Rebuked

1 But it greatly displeased Jonah, and he became (C1)angry.2 Then he (C1)prayed to the LORD and said, "Please LORD, was this not (F1)what I said when I was still in my own country? Therefore in anticipation of this I (C2)fled to Tarshish, since I knew that You are a (C3)gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abundant in mercy, and One who relents of disaster.3 "So now, LORD, please (C1)take my (F1)life from me, for death is (C2)better to me than life."4 But the LORD said, "Do you have a good reason to be angry?"

5 Then Jonah left the city and sat down east of (F1)it. There he made a shelter for himself and (C1)sat under it in the shade, until he could see what would happen in the city.6 So the LORD God designated a (F1)plant, and it grew up over Jonah to be a shade over his head, to (F2)relieve him of his discomfort. And Jonah (F3)was overjoyed about the plant.7 But God designated a worm when dawn came the next day, and it attacked the plant and it (C1)withered.8 And when the sun came up God designated a scorching (C1)east wind, and the (C2)sun beat down on Jonah's head so that he became faint, and he begged with all his soul to die, saying, "(C3)Death is better to me than life!"

9 But God said to Jonah, "Do you have a good reason to be angry about the plant?" And he said, "I have good reason to be angry, even to the point of death!"10 Then the LORD said, "You had compassion on the plant, for which you did not work and which you did not cause to grow, which (F1)came up overnight and perished (F2)overnight.11 "Should I not also (C1)have compassion on Nineveh, the great city in which there are more than 120,000 people, who do not (C2)know the difference between their right hand and their left, as well as many (C3)animals?"

Micah 1-3

Chapter 1

Destruction in Israel and Judah

1 The (C1)word of the LORD which came to (C2)Micah of Moresheth in the days of (C3)Jotham, (C4)Ahaz, and (C5)Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and which he saw regarding Samaria and Jerusalem.

2 Hear, you peoples, all of (F1)you;
(C1)Listen carefully, earth and (F2)all it contains,
And may the Lord (F3)GOD be a (C2)witness against you,
The Lord from His holy temple.

3 For behold, the LORD is (C1)coming forth from His place.
He will come down and (C2)tread on the high places of the (F1)earth.

4 (C1)The mountains will melt under Him
And the valleys will be split,
Like wax before the fire,
Like water poured down a steep place.

5 All this is due to the (F1)wrongdoing of Jacob
And the sins of the house of Israel.
What is the (F1)(C1)wrongdoing of Jacob?
Is it not (C2)Samaria?
What is the (C3)high (F2)place of Judah?
Is it not Jerusalem?

6 For I will make Samaria a (C1)heap of ruins (F1)in the open country,
(C2)Planting places for a vineyard.
I will (C3)hurl her stones down into the valley,
And (C4)lay bare her foundations.

7 All of her (C1)idols will be crushed,
All of her earnings will be burned with fire,
And all of her images I will make desolate;
For she collected them from a (C2)prostitute's earnings,
And to the earnings of a prostitute they will return.

8 Because of this I must mourn and wail,
I must go (C1)barefoot and naked;
I must do mourning like the (C2)jackals,
And a mourning like the ostriches.

9 For her (C1)wound is incurable,
For (C2)it has come to Judah;
It has reached the (C3)gate of my people,
Even to Jerusalem.

10 (C1)Do not tell it in Gath,
Do not weep at all.
At (F1)Beth-le-aphrah roll yourself in the dust in mourning.

11 (F1)Go on your way, inhabitant of (F2)Shaphir, in (C1)shameful nakedness.
The inhabitant of (F3)(C2)Zaanan does not (F4)escape.
The mourning of (F5)Beth-ezel: "He will take from you its (F6)support."

12 For the inhabitant of (F1)Maroth
(F2)(C1)Waits for something good,
Because a disaster has come down from the LORD
To the (C2)gate of Jerusalem.

13 Harness the chariot to the team of horses,
You inhabitant of (C1)Lachish—
She was the beginning of sin
To the daughter of Zion—
Because in you were found
The (C2)rebellious acts of Israel.

14 Therefore you will give parting (C1)gifts
In behalf of Moresheth-gath;
The houses of (C2)Achzib will become a (F1)(C3)deception
To the kings of Israel.

15 Moreover, I will bring on you
The one who takes possession,
You inhabitant of (F1)(C1)Mareshah.
The glory of Israel will enter (C2)Adullam.

16 Shave yourself (C1)bald, yes, cut off your hair,
Because of the children of your delight;
Extend your baldness like the eagle,
For they will (C2)go from you into exile.

Chapter 2

Woe to Oppressors

1 Woe to those who (C1)devise wrongdoing,
Who practice evil on their beds!
(F1)(C2)When morning comes, they do it,
Because it is in the (C3)power of their hands.

2 They (C1)covet fields, so they (C2)seize them;
And houses, so they take them.
They (F1)(C3)exploit a man and his house,
A person and his inheritance.

3 Therefore this is what the LORD says:

"Behold, I am (C1)planning against this (C2)family a catastrophe
From which you (C3)cannot remove your necks;
And you will not walk (C4)haughtily,
For it will be an (C5)evil time.

4 "On that day they will (C1)take up against you a (F1)song of mocking
And (F2)(C2)utter a song of mourning and say,
'We are completely (C3)destroyed!
He exchanges the share of my people;
How He removes it from me!
To the apostate He (C4)apportions our fields.'

5 "Therefore you will have no one (F1)(C1)applying a measuring line
For you by lot in the assembly of the LORD.

6 '(C1)Do not prophesy,' so they prophesy.
But if (F1)they do (C2)not prophesy about these things,
(C3)Insults will not be turned back.

7 "Is it being said, house of Jacob:
'Is the Spirit of the LORD (C1)impatient?
Are these His works?'
Do My words not (C2)do good
For the one (C3)walking rightly?

8 "(F1)Recently My people have arisen as an (C1)enemy—
You (C2)strip the robe off the garment
From (C3)unsuspecting passers-by,
From those returned from war.

9 "You (C1)evict the women of My people,
Each one from her pleasant house.
From her children you take My (C2)splendor forever.

10 "Arise and go,
For this is no place (C1)of rest
Because of the (C2)uncleanness that brings on destruction,
A painful destruction.

11 "If someone walking after wind and (C1)falsehood
Had lied and said,
'I will prophesy to you about (C2)wine and liquor,'
He would become a prophet to (C3)this people.

12 "I will certainly (C1)assemble all of you, Jacob,
I will certainly gather the (C2)remnant of Israel.
I will put them together like sheep in the fold;
Like a flock in the midst of its pasture
They will be noisy with people.

13 "The one who breaks through goes up before them;
They break through, pass through the gate, and go out by it.
So their king passes on before them,
And the LORD at their head."

Chapter 3

Rulers Denounced

1 And I said,

"(C1)Hear now, you (F1)leaders of Jacob
And rulers of the house of Israel:
Is it not for you to (C2)know justice?

2 "You who hate good and love evil,
Who (C1)tear off their skin from them
And their flesh from their bones,

3 Who (C1)eat the flesh of my people,
Strip off their skin from them,
Smash their bones,
And (C2)chop them up as for the pot,
And as meat in a cauldron!"

4 Then they will (C1)cry out to the LORD,
But He will not answer them.
Instead, He will (C2)hide His face from them at that time
Because they have (C3)practiced evil deeds.

5 This is what the LORD says concerning the prophets who (C1)lead my people astray:

When they have something to bite with their teeth,
They (C2)cry out, "Peace!"
But against him who puts nothing in their mouths
They declare holy war.

6 Therefore it will be (C1)night for you—without vision,
And darkness for you—without divination.
The (C2)sun will go down on the prophets,
And the day will become dark over them.

7 The seers will be (C1)put to shame,
And the (C2)diviners will be ashamed.
Indeed, they will all (C3)cover their (F1)lips
Because there is (C4)no answer from God.

8 On the other hand, (C1)I am filled with power—
With the Spirit of the LORD
And with justice and courage
To (C2)make known to Jacob his rebellious act,
And to Israel his sin.

9 Now hear this, you (C1)heads of the house of Jacob
And rulers of the house of Israel,
Who (C2)despise justice
And twist everything that is straight,

10 Who (C1)build Zion with bloodshed,
And Jerusalem with malice.

11 Her leaders pronounce (C1)judgment for a bribe,
Her (C2)priests teach for pay,
And her prophets divine for money.
Yet they lean on the LORD, saying,
"(C3)Is the LORD not in our midst?
Catastrophe will not come upon us."

12 Therefore on account of you,
(C1)Zion will be plowed like a field,
(C2)Jerusalem will become a heap of ruins,
And the (C3)mountain of the (F1)temple will become high places of a forest.
