Ezra 7-8
Chapter 7
Ezra Journeys from Babylon to Jerusalem
1 (C1)Now after these things, in the reign of (C2)Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra went up to Jerusalem; Ezra was the son of Seraiah, son of Azariah, son of Hilkiah,2 son of Shallum, son of Zadok, son of Ahitub,3 son of Amariah, son of Azariah, son of Meraioth,4 son of Zerahiah, son of Uzzi, son of Bukki,5 son of Abishua, son of Phinehas, son of Eleazar, son of Aaron the chief priest.6 So this Ezra went up from Babylon, and he was a (C1)scribe skilled in the Law of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all (F1)he requested (C2)because the hand of the LORD his God was upon him.7 (C1)Some of the sons of Israel and some of the priests, the Levites, the singers, the gatekeepers, and the temple servants went up to Jerusalem in the seventh year of King Artaxerxes.
8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which was in the seventh year of the king.9 For on the first day of the first month he began to go up from Babylon; and on the first of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, (C1)because the good hand of his God was upon him.10 For Ezra had (F1)firmly resolved to study the Law of the LORD and to practice it, and (C1)to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.
King's Decree on Behalf of Ezra
11 Now this is the copy of the letter which King Artaxerxes gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, (F1)learned in the words of the commandments of the LORD and His statutes to Israel:12 "(F1)Artaxerxes, (C1)king of kings, to Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, (F2)perfect peace. And now13 (C1)I have issued a decree that any of the people of Israel and their priests and the Levites in my kingdom who are willing to go to Jerusalem, may go with you.14 "Since you are sent (F1)on the part of the king and his (C1)seven advisers to inquire about Judah and Jerusalem according to the Law of your God which is in your hand,15 and to bring the silver and gold, which the king and his advisers have voluntarily given to the God of Israel, (C1)whose dwelling is in Jerusalem,16 with (C1)all the silver and gold which you find in the entire province of Babylon, along (C2)with the (F1)voluntary offering of the people and of the priests, who (C3)offered willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem;17 with this money, therefore, you shall diligently buy bulls, rams, and lambs, (C1)with their grain offerings and their drink offerings, and (C2)offer them on the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem.18 "And whatever seems good to you and your brothers to do with the rest of the silver and gold, you may do according to the will of your God.19 "Also the utensils which are given to you for the service of the house of your God, deliver in full before the God of Jerusalem.20 "And the rest of the needs of the house of your God, for which it may be incumbent upon you to provide, (C1)provide for them from the royal treasury.
21 "I myself, King Artaxerxes, issue a decree to all the treasurers who are in the provinces beyond the Euphrates River, that whatever Ezra the priest, (C1)the scribe of the Law of the God of heaven, may require of you, it shall be done diligently,22 up to (F1)a hundred talents of silver, (F2)a hundred kors of wheat, (F3)a hundred baths of wine, (F3)a hundred baths of anointing oil, and salt (F4)as needed.23 "Whatever is (F1)commanded by the God of heaven, it shall be done with zeal for the house of the God of heaven, (C1)so that there will not be wrath against the kingdom of the king and his sons.24 "We also inform you that (C1)it is not allowed to impose tax, tribute, or toll (C2)on any of the priests, Levites, singers, doorkeepers, temple servants, or other servants of this house of God.
25 "And you, Ezra, according to the wisdom of your God which is in your hand, (C1)appoint magistrates and judges so that they may judge all the people who are in the province beyond the Euphrates River, that is, all those who know the laws of your God; and you may (C2)teach anyone who is ignorant of them.26 "And (C1)whoever does not comply with the Law of your God and the law of the king, judgment is to be executed upon him strictly, whether for death or for banishment, or for (F1)confiscation of property or for imprisonment."
The King's Kindness
27 Blessed be the LORD, the God of our fathers, (C1)who has put such a thing as this in the king's heart, to glorify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem,28 and (C1)has extended favor to me before the king and his counselors and before all the king's mighty officials. So I was strengthened according to (C2)the hand of the LORD my God that was upon me, and I gathered (F1)leading men from Israel to go up with me.
Chapter 8
People Who Went with Ezra
1 Now these are the heads of their fathers' households and the genealogical enrollment of those who went up with me from Babylon in the reign of King Artaxerxes:2 of the sons of Phinehas, Gershom; of the sons of Ithamar, Daniel; of the sons of David, (C1)Hattush;3 of the sons of Shecaniah who was of the sons of (C1)Parosh, Zechariah, and with him 150 males who were in the genealogical list;4 of the sons of Pahath-moab, Eliehoenai the son of Zerahiah and two hundred males with him;5 of the sons of (F1)Zattu, Shecaniah, the son of Jahaziel and three hundred males with him;6 and of the sons of (C1)Adin, Ebed the son of Jonathan and fifty males with him;7 and of the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah and seventy males with him;8 and of the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael and eighty males with him;9 of the sons of Joab, Obadiah the son of Jehiel and 218 males with him;10 and of the sons of (F1)Bani, Shelomith, the son of Josiphiah and 160 males with him;11 and of the sons of Bebai, Zechariah the son of Bebai and twenty-eight males with him;12 and of the sons of Azgad, Johanan the son of Hakkatan and 110 males with him;13 and of the sons of Adonikam, the last ones, these being their names: Eliphelet, (F1)Jeiel, and Shemaiah, and sixty males with them;14 and of the sons of Bigvai, Uthai and (F1)Zabbud, and seventy males with (F2)them.
Ezra Sends for Levites
15 Now I assembled them at (C1)the river that runs to Ahava, where we camped for three days; and when I paid close attention to the people and the priests, I (C2)did not find any Levites there.16 So I sent for Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, (F1)leading men, and for Joiarib and Elnathan, teachers.17 And I sent them to Iddo the (F1)leading man at the place called Casiphia; and I (F2)told them what to say to (F3)Iddo and his brothers, (C1)the temple servants at the place Casiphia, that is, to bring ministers to us for the house of our God.18 (C1)And as the good hand of our God was upon us, they brought us a (C2)man of insight from the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel, namely Sherebiah, and his sons and brothers, eighteen men;19 and Hashabiah and (F1)Jeshaiah of the sons of Merari, with his brothers and their sons, twenty men;20 and 220 of (C1)the temple servants, whom David and the officials had provided for the service of the Levites, all of them designated by name.
Protection of God Invoked
21 Then I proclaimed (C1)a fast there at (C2)the river of Ahava, to (C3)humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him a (F1)safe journey for us, our little ones, and all our possessions.22 For I was ashamed to request from the king troops and horsemen to (F1)protect us from the enemy on the way, because we had said to the king, "(C1)The hand of our God is (F2)favorably disposed to all who seek Him, but (C2)His power and His anger are against all those who (C3)abandon Him."23 So we fasted and sought our God concerning this matter, and He (F1)(C1)listened to our pleading.
24 Then I selected twelve of the leading priests: (C1)Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and with them ten of their brothers;25 and I (C1)weighed out to them (C2)the silver, the gold, and the utensils, the offering for the house of our God which the king, (C3)his counselors, his officials, and all Israel who were present there had contributed.26 (C1)So I weighed into their hands (F1)650 talents of silver, and silver utensils worth (F2)a hundred talents, and a hundred gold talents,27 and twenty gold bowls worth a thousand (F1)darics, and two utensils of fine shiny bronze, precious as gold.28 Then I said to them, "(C1)You are holy to the LORD, and the (C2)utensils are holy; and the silver and the gold are a (F1)voluntary offering to the LORD God of your fathers.29 "Watch and keep them (C1)until you weigh them before the leading priests, the Levites, and the leaders of the fathers' households of Israel in Jerusalem, in the chambers of the house of the LORD."30 So the priests and the Levites (C1)accepted the weight of silver and gold and the utensils, to bring them to Jerusalem to the house of our God.
31 Then we journeyed from (C1)the river Ahava on (C2)the twelfth of the first month to go to Jerusalem; and (C3)the hand of our God was upon us, and He rescued us from the hand of the enemy and the ambushes by the road.32 (C1)So we came to Jerusalem and remained there for three days.
Treasure Placed in the Temple
33 And on the fourth day the silver, the gold, and the utensils (C1)were weighed out in the house of our God into the hand of (C2)Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest, and with him was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them were the Levites, Jozabad the son of Jeshua and Noadiah the son of Binnui.34 A notation was made for everything by number and weight, and all the weight was recorded at that time.35 (C1)The exiles who had come from the captivity offered burnt offerings to the God of Israel: (C2)twelve bulls for all Israel, ninety-six rams, seventy-seven lambs, twelve male goats for a sin offering, all as a burnt offering to the LORD.36 Then (C1)they delivered the king's edicts to (C2)the king's satraps and the governors in the provinces beyond the Euphrates River, and they supported the people and the house of God.
Psalms 94
Chapter 94
The LORD Implored to Avenge His People.
1 LORD, God of (F1)(C1)vengeance,
God of (F1)vengeance, (F2)(C2)shine forth!
2 (C1)Rise up, (C2)Judge of the earth,
Pay back retribution (C3)to the proud.
3 How long, LORD, shall the wicked—
How long shall the (C1)wicked triumph?
4 They pour out words, they (C1)speak arrogantly;
All who do injustice (C2)boast.
5 They (C1)crush Your people, LORD,
And (C2)afflict Your inheritance.
6 They (C1)kill the widow and the stranger
And murder the orphans.
7 (C1)They have said, "(F1)The LORD does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob perceive."
8 Pay attention, you (C1)stupid ones among the people;
And when will you understand, (C1)foolish ones?
9 He who (C1)planted the ear, (F1)does He not hear?
Or He who formed the eye, (F1)does He not see?
10 He who (F1)(C1)disciplines the nations, will He not rebuke,
He who (C2)teaches mankind knowledge?
11 The LORD (C1)knows human thoughts,
(F1)That they are mere breath.
12 Blessed is the man whom (C1)You discipline, (F1)LORD,
And (C2)whom You teach from Your Law,
13 So that You may grant him (C1)relief from the (C2)days of adversity,
Until (C3)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For (C1)the LORD will not abandon His people,
Nor will He (C2)abandon His inheritance.
15 For (F1)(C1)judgment (F2)will again be righteous,
And all the upright in heart (F3)will follow it.
16 Who will (C1)stand up for me against evildoers?
Who will take his stand for me (C2)against those who do injustice?
17 If (C1)the LORD had not been my help,
My soul would soon have dwelt in the land of silence.
18 If I should say, "(C1)My foot has slipped,"
Your faithfulness, LORD, will support me.
19 When my anxious thoughts (F1)multiply within me,
Your (C1)comfort delights my soul.
20 Can a (F1)(C1)throne of destruction be allied with You,
One (C2)which devises (F2)mischief by decree?
21 They (C1)band themselves together against the (F1)life of the righteous
And (C2)condemn (F2)the innocent to death.
22 But the LORD has been my (C1)refuge,
And my God the (C2)rock of my refuge.
23 He has (C1)brought back their injustice upon them,
And He will (F1)(C2)destroy them in their evil;
The LORD our God will (F1)destroy them.
3 John 1
Chapter 1
A Good Report
1 (C1)The elder to the beloved (C2)Gaius, whom I (C3)love in truth.
2 Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.3 For I (C1)was overjoyed when (C2)brothers came and testified to your truth, that is, how you (C1)are walking in truth.4 I have no greater joy than (F1)this, to hear of (C1)my children (C2)walking in the truth.
5 Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever you accomplish for the (C1)brothers and sisters, and (F1)especially when they are (C2)strangers;6 and they have testified to your love before the church. You will do well to (F1)(C1)send them on their way in a manner (C2)worthy of God.7 For they went out for the sake of (C1)the Name, (C2)accepting nothing from the Gentiles.8 Therefore we ought to (F1)support such people, so that we may (F2)prove to be fellow workers (F3)with the truth.
9 I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to (C1)be first among them, does not accept (F1)what we say.10 For this reason, (C1)if I come, I will call attention to his deeds which he does, unjustly accusing us with malicious words; and not satisfied with this, he himself does not (C2)receive the (C3)brothers either, and he forbids those who want to do so and (C4)puts them out of the church.
11 Beloved, (C1)do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. (C2)The one who does what is good is of God; (C3)the one who does what is evil has not seen God.12 Demetrius (C1)has received a good testimony from everyone, and from the truth itself; and we testify too, and (C2)you know that our testimony is true.
13 (C1)I had many things to write to you, but I do not want to write to you with pen and ink;14 but I hope to see you shortly, and we will speak (F1)face to face.
15 (C1)Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends (C2)by name.
