2 Chronicles 26

Chapter 26

Uzziah Succeeds Amaziah in Judah

1 Now all the people of Judah took (F1)Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah.2 He built Eloth and restored it to Judah after the king (F1)lay down with his fathers.3 Uzziah was (C1)sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned for fifty-two years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was (F1)Jechiliah of Jerusalem.4 He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, in accordance with everything that his father Amaziah had done.5 (C1)He continued to seek God in the days of Zechariah, (C2)who had understanding (F1)through the vision of God; and (F2)(C3)as long as he sought the LORD, God made him successful.

Uzziah Succeeds in War

6 Now he went out and (C1)fought against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath, the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in the area of Ashdod and among the Philistines.7 (C1)God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians who lived in Gur-baal, and the Meunites.8 The Ammonites gave (C1)tribute to Uzziah, and his (F1)fame extended to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong.9 Moreover, Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at (C1)the Corner Gate, the (C2)Valley Gate, and at the corner buttress, and he fortified them.10 He also built towers in the wilderness and (C1)carved out many cisterns, for he had much livestock, both in the (F1)lowland and in the plain. He also had plowmen and vinedressers in the hill country and the fertile fields, for he loved the soil.11 Moreover, Uzziah had an army ready for battle, which (F1)entered combat by divisions according to the number of their muster, (F2)recorded by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the official, under the direction of Hananiah, one of the king's officers.12 The total number of the heads of the (F1)households, of valiant warriors, was 2,600.13 Under their direction was an army of (C1)307,500, who could wage war with great power, to help the king against the enemy.14 Moreover, Uzziah prepared (F1)for all the army shields, spears, helmets, body armor, bows, and slingstones.15 In Jerusalem he made machines of war invented by skillful workmen to be on the towers and the corners, for the purpose of shooting arrows and great stones. So his (F1)fame spread far, for he was marvelously helped until he was strong.

Pride Is Uzziah's Undoing

16 But (C1)when he became strong, his heart was so (F1)proud that he acted corruptly, and he was untrue to the LORD his God, for (C2)he entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.17 Then (C1)Azariah the priest entered after him, and with him eighty priests of the LORD, valiant men.18 (C1)They opposed Uzziah the king and said to him, "(C2)It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD, (C3)but for the priests, the sons of Aaron who have been consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have been untrue and will have no honor from the LORD God."19 But Uzziah, with a censer in his hand for burning incense, was enraged; and while he was enraged with the priests, (C1)leprosy broke out on his forehead in the presence of the priests in the house of the LORD, beside the altar of incense.20 Azariah the chief priest and all the priests looked at him, and behold, he was leprous on his forehead; and they quickly removed him from there, and he himself also hurried to get out because the LORD had stricken him.21 (C1)King Uzziah had leprosy to the day of his death; and he lived in (C2)a separate house, afflicted as he was with leprosy, for he was cut off from the house of the LORD. And his son Jotham was over the king's house, judging the people of the land.

22 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, the first to the last, the prophet (C1)Isaiah, the son of Amoz, has written.23 So Uzziah (F1)lay down with his fathers, and they buried him with his fathers (C1)in the field of the grave which belonged to the kings, for they said, "He had leprosy." And his son Jotham became king in his place.

Psalms 83

Chapter 83

God Implored to Confound His Enemies.

A Song, a Psalm of Asaph.

1 God, (C1)do not remain quiet;
(C2)Do not be silent and, God, do not be still.

2 For behold, Your enemies (C1)make an uproar,
And (C2)those who hate You have (F1)(C3)exalted themselves.

3 They (C1)make shrewd plans against Your people,
And (F1)conspire together against (C2)Your (F2)treasured ones.

4 They have said, "Come, and (C1)let's wipe them out (F1)as a nation,
So that the (C2)name of Israel will no longer be remembered."

5 For they have (F1)(C1)conspired together with one mind;
They make a covenant against You:

6 The tents of (C1)Edom and the (C2)Ishmaelites,
(C3)Moab and the (C4)Hagrites;

7 (C1)Gebal, (C2)Ammon, and (C3)Amalek,
(C4)Philistia with the inhabitants of (C5)Tyre;

8 (C1)Assyria also has joined them;
They have become (F1)a help to the (C2)children of Lot. Selah

9 Deal with them (C1)as with Midian,
As (C2)with Sisera and Jabin at the river of Kishon,

10 Who were destroyed at En-dor,
Who (C1)became like dung for the ground.

11 Make their nobles like (C1)Oreb and Zeeb,
And all their leaders like (C2)Zebah and Zalmunna,

12 Who said, "(C1)Let's possess for ourselves
The (C2)pastures of God."

13 My God, make them like the (F1)(C1)whirling dust,
Like (C2)chaff before the wind.

14 Like (C1)fire that burns the forest,
And like a flame that (C2)sets the mountains on fire,

15 So pursue them (C1)with Your heavy gale,
And terrify them with Your storm.

16 (C1)Fill their faces with dishonor,
So that they will seek Your name, LORD.

17 May they be (C1)ashamed and dismayed forever,
And may they be humiliated and perish,

18 So that they will (C1)know that (C2)You alone, whose name is the LORD,
Are the (C3)Most High over all the earth.

John 18:1-18

Chapter 18

Judas Betrays Jesus

1 When Jesus had spoken these words, (C1)He went away with His disciples across (C2)the (F1)ravine of the Kidron, where there was (C3)a garden which He entered (F2)with His disciples.2 Now Judas, who was (F1)betraying Him, also knew the place, because Jesus had (C1)often met there with His disciples.3 (C1)So Judas, having obtained (C2)the Roman (F1)cohort and (C3)officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, (*)came there with lanterns, (C4)torches, and weapons.4 Jesus therefore, (C1)knowing all the things that were coming upon Him, came out into the open and (*)said to them, "(C2)Whom are you seeking?"5 They answered Him, "Jesus the Nazarene." He (*)said to them, "I am He." And Judas also, who was betraying Him, was standing with them.6 Now then, when He said to them, "I am He," they drew back and fell to the ground.7 He then asked them again, "(C1)Whom are you seeking?" And they said, "Jesus the Nazarene."8 Jesus answered, "I told you that I am He; so if you are seeking Me, let these men go on their way."9 This took place so that the word which He spoke would be fulfilled: "(C1)Of those whom You have given Me I lost not one."10 Then Simon Peter, (C1)since he had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his right ear; and the slave's name was Malchus.11 So Jesus said to Peter, "Put the sword into the sheath; (C1)the cup which the Father has given Me, am I not to drink it?"

Jesus before the Priests

12 (C1)So (C2)the Roman (F1)cohort, the (F2)commander, and the (C2)officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him,13 and brought Him to (C1)Annas first; for he was the father-in-law of (C2)Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.14 Now Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that (C1)it was in their best interest for one man to die in behalf of the people.

15 (C1)Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so was another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and he entered with Jesus into (C2)the courtyard of the high priest,16 (C1)but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.17 (C1)Then the slave woman who was the doorkeeper (*)said to Peter, "(C2)You are not also one of this Man's disciples, are you?" He (*)said, "I am not."18 Now the slaves and the (C1)officers were standing there, having made (C2)a charcoal fire, for it was cold and they were (C3)warming themselves; and Peter was also with them, standing and warming himself.<
