2 Chronicles 25

Chapter 25

Amaziah Succeeds Joash in Judah

1 (C1)Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.2 He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, (C1)only not wholeheartedly.3 Now (C1)it came about, as soon as the kingdom was (F1)firmly in his grasp, that he killed his servants who had killed his father the king.4 However, he did not put their children to death, but did as it is written in the Law in the Book of Moses, which the LORD commanded, saying, "(C1)Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, nor sons be put to death for fathers; but each shall be put to death for his own sin."

Amaziah Defeats Edomites

5 Moreover, Amaziah assembled Judah and appointed them according to their fathers' households under commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds throughout Judah and Benjamin; and he (F1)took a census of those (C1)from twenty years old and upward and found them to be (C2)three hundred thousand choice men, able to go to war and handle spear and shield.6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for (F1)a hundred talents of silver.7 But (C1)a man of God came to him saying, "O king, do not let the army of Israel come with you, for the LORD is not with Israel nor with any of the sons of Ephraim.8 "But if you do go, do it, be strong for the battle; yet God will (F1)bring you down before the enemy, (C1)for God has the power to help and to (F2)bring down."9 Amaziah said to the man of God, "But what are we to do about the (F1)hundred talents which I have given to the troops of Israel?" And the man of God answered, "(C1)The LORD has much more to give you than this."10 Then Amaziah (F1)dismissed the troops which came to him from Ephraim, to go home; so their anger burned against Judah, and they returned (F2)home in fierce anger.

11 Now Amaziah gathered his courage and led his people out, and went to (C1)the Valley of Salt, and struck and killed ten thousand of the sons of Seir.12 The sons of Judah also captured ten thousand alive and brought them to the top of the cliff, and threw them down from the top of the cliff so that they were all dashed to pieces.13 But the (F1)troops whom Amaziah sent back, those not going with him to battle, raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon, and struck and killed three thousand of them, and plundered a large amount of spoils.

Amaziah Rebuked for Idolatry

14 Now after Amaziah came from slaughtering the Edomites, (C1)he brought the gods of the sons of Seir and set them up as his gods. Then he bowed down before them and burned incense to them.15 So the anger of the LORD burned against Amaziah, and He sent him a prophet who said to him, "Why have you sought the gods of the people (C1)who have not saved their own people from your hand?"16 As he was talking with him, (F1)the king said to him, "Have we appointed you to be a royal counselor? Stop! Why should (F2)you be put to death?" Then the prophet stopped and said, "I know that God has planned to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel."

Amaziah Defeated by Joash of Israel

17 (C1)Then Amaziah king of Judah took counsel and sent word to Joash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, "Come, let's face each other."18 But Joash the king of Israel sent a reply to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, "(C1)The thorn bush that was in Lebanon sent word to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son in marriage.' But a wild beast that was in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thorn bush.19 "You said, 'Behold, you have (F1)defeated Edom.' And (C1)your heart has lifted you up in boasting. Now stay home; why should you provoke trouble so that you, would fall, you and Judah with you?"

20 But Amaziah would not listen, for it was from God, so that He might hand them over to Joash, because they had sought the gods of Edom.21 So Joash king of Israel went up, and he and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth-shemesh, which belonged to Judah.22 And Judah was defeated (F1)by Israel, and they fled, every man to his tent.23 Then Joash king of Israel captured Amaziah king of Judah, the son of Joash the son of (C1)Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem and tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate, (F1)four hundred cubits.24 He took all the gold and silver and all the utensils which were found in the house of God with (C1)Obed-edom, and the treasures of the king's house, the hostages too, and returned to Samaria.

25 (C1)And Amaziah, the son of Joash king of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel.26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, from the first to the last, behold, are they not written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel?27 From the time that Amaziah turned away from following the LORD they conspired against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; but they sent men after him to Lachish, and they killed him there.28 Then they brought him on horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.

Psalms 82

Chapter 82

Unjust Judgments Rebuked.

A Psalm of Asaph.

1 God takes His (C1)position in (F1)His assembly;
He (C2)judges in the midst of the (C3)gods.

2 How long will you (C1)judge unjustly
And (C2)show partiality to the wicked? Selah

3 (C1)Vindicate the weak and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.

4 (C1)Rescue the weak and needy;
Save them from the hand of the wicked.

5 They (C1)do not know nor do they understand;
They (C2)walk around in darkness;
All the (C3)foundations of the earth are shaken.

6 (F1)I (C1)said, "You are gods,
And all of you are (C2)sons of the Most High.

7 "Nevertheless (C1)you will die like men,
And fall like (C2)one of the princes."

8 (C1)Arise, God, (C2)judge the earth!
For You (C3)possess all the nations.

John 17

Chapter 17

The High Priestly Prayer

1 Jesus spoke these things; and (C1)raising His eyes to heaven, He said, "Father, the hour has come; (C2)glorify Your Son, so that the Son may glorify You,2 just as (C1)You gave Him authority over all (F1)mankind, so that (F2)(C2)to all whom You have given Him, (C3)He may give eternal life.3 "And this is eternal life, that they may know You, (C1)the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom (C2)You have sent.4 "(C1)I glorified You on the earth (F1)(C2)by accomplishing the work which You have given Me to do.5 "And now You, Father, (C1)glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had (C2)with You before the world existed.

6 "(C1)I have revealed Your name to the men whom (C2)You gave Me out of the world; they were (C3)Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have (C4)followed Your word.7 "Now they have come to know that everything which You have given Me is from You;8 for (C1)the words which You gave Me (C2)I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that (C3)I came forth from You, and they believed that (C4)You sent Me.9 "(C1)I ask on their behalf; (C2)I do not ask on behalf of the world, but on the behalf of those whom (C3)You have given Me, because (C4)they are Yours;10 and (C1)all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them.11 "I am no longer going to be in the world; and yet (C1)they themselves are in the world, and (C2)I am coming to You. (C3)Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name (C4)which You have given Me, so that (C5)they may be one just as We are.12 "While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name, (C1)which You have given Me; and I guarded them, and (C2)not one of them perished except (C3)the (F1)son of destruction, so that the (C4)Scripture would be fulfilled.

The Disciples in the World

13 "But now (C1)I am coming to You; and (C2)these things I speak in the world so that they may have My (C3)joy made full in themselves.14 "I have given them Your word; and (C1)the world has hated them because (C2)they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.15 "I am not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them away from (F1)(C1)the evil one.16 "(C1)They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.17 "(C1)Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.18 "Just as (C1)You sent Me into the world, (C2)I also sent them into the world.19 "And for their sakes I (C1)sanctify Myself, so that they themselves also may be (C2)sanctified (C3)in truth.

20 "I am not asking on behalf of these alone, but also for those who believe in Me through their word,21 that they may all be one; (C1)just as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, (C2)so that the world may (F1)believe that (C3)You sent Me.

Disciples' Future Glory

22 "The (C1)glory which You have given Me I also have given to them, so that they may be one, just as We are one;23 (C1)I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected (F1)in unity, so that the world may (F2)know that (C2)You sent Me, and You (C3)loved them, just as You loved Me.24 "Father, I desire that (C1)they also, whom You have given Me, (C2)be with Me where I am, so that they may see My (C3)glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before (C4)the foundation of the world.

25 "(C1)Righteous Father, (F1)although (C2)the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that (C3)You sent Me;26 and (C1)I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that (C2)the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them."
