2 Chronicles 24

Chapter 24

Young Joash Influenced by Jehoiada

1 (C1)Joash was seven years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Zibiah from Beersheba.2 (C1)Joash did what was right in the sight of the LORD all the days of Jehoiada the priest.3 Jehoiada took two wives for him, and he fathered sons and daughters.

Faithless Priests

4 Now it came about after this that Joash (F1)decided (C1)to restore the house of the LORD.5 He gathered the priests and Levites and said to them, "Go out to the cities of Judah and collect money from all (C1)Israel to (F1)repair the house of your God annually, and you shall (F2)do the work quickly." But the Levites did not act quickly.6 So the king summoned Jehoiada, the chief priest, and said to him, "Why have you not required the Levites to bring in from Judah and from Jerusalem (C1)the (F1)contribution of Moses, the servant of the LORD, and the congregation of Israel, (C2)for the tent of the testimony?"7 For (C1)the sons of the wicked Athaliah had broken into the house of God, and even (F1)used the holy things of the house of the LORD for the Baals.

Temple Repaired

8 So the king commanded, and (C1)they made a chest and set it outside by the gate of the house of the LORD.9 (C1)And they made a proclamation in Judah and Jerusalem to bring to the LORD (C2)the (F1)contribution commanded by Moses the servant of God on Israel in the wilderness.10 All the officers and all the people rejoiced, and they brought in their contribution and (F1)dropped it into the chest until they had finished.11 It happened that whenever the chest was brought to the king's officer by the Levites, and (C1)they saw that the money was substantial, the king's scribe and the chief priest's officer would come and empty the chest, and pick it up and return it to its place. They did this daily and collected a large amount of money.12 The king and Jehoiada gave it to those who did the work of the service of the house of the LORD; and they hired masons and carpenters to restore the house of the LORD, and also workers in iron and bronze to repair the house of the LORD.13 So the workmen labored, and the repair work progressed in their hands, and they (F1)restored the house of God according to its (F2)specifications and strengthened it.14 When they had finished, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada; and it was made into utensils for the house of the LORD, utensils for the service and the burnt offerings, and pans and utensils of gold and silver. And they offered burnt offerings in the house of the LORD continually, all the days of Jehoiada.

15 Now Jehoiada (F1)reached a good old age and he died; he was 130 years old at his death.16 And they buried him (C1)in the city of David with the kings, because he had done well in (C2)Israel and (F1)for God and His house.

17 But after the death of Jehoiada the officials of Judah came and bowed down to the king, and the king listened to them.18 And they abandoned (C1)the house of the LORD, the God of their fathers, and (C2)served the (F1)Asherim and the idols; so (C3)wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs.19 Yet (C1)He sent prophets to them to bring them back to the LORD; and they testified against them, but they would not listen.

Joash Murders Son of Jehoiada

20 (C1)Then the Spirit of God (F1)covered Zechariah, the son of Jehoiada the priest like clothing; and he stood above the people and said to them, "This is what God has said, '(C2)Why do you break the commandments of the LORD and do not prosper? (C3)Because you have abandoned the LORD, He has also abandoned you.'"21 So (C1)they conspired against him, and at the command of the king they stoned him (F1)to death in the courtyard of the house of the LORD.22 So Joash the king did not remember the kindness which Zechariah's father Jehoiada had shown him, but he murdered his son. And as Zechariah died he said, "May (C1)the LORD see and (F1)avenge!"

Aram Invades and Defeats Judah

23 Now it happened at the turn of the year that (C1)the army of the Arameans came up against Joash; and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, destroyed all the officials of the people from among the people, and sent all their spoils to the king of Damascus.24 Indeed, the army of the Arameans came with a small number of men; yet (C1)the LORD handed a very great army over to them, (C2)because (F1)Judah and Joash had abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers. So they executed judgment on Joash.

25 (C1)When they left him (for they left him very sick), his own servants conspired against him because of the blood of the (F1)son of Jehoiada the priest, and they murdered him on his bed. So he died, and they buried him in the city of David, but they did not bury him in the tombs of the kings.26 Now these are the men who conspired against him: Zabad the son of Shimeath the Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith the Moabitess.27 As to his sons and the many pronouncements against him and (C1)the (F1)rebuilding of the house of God, behold, they are written in the (F2)(C2)treatise of the Book of the Kings. Then his son Amaziah became king in his place.

Psalms 81

Chapter 81

God's Goodness and Israel's Waywardness.

For the music director; (FA)on the Gittith. A Psalm of Asaph.

1 (C1)Sing for joy to God our (C2)strength;
Shout (C3)joyfully to the (C4)God of Jacob.

2 Raise a song, strike (C1)the tambourine,
The sweet sounding (C2)lyre with the (C3)harp.

3 Blow the trumpet at the (C1)new moon,
At the full moon, on our (C2)feast day.

4 For it is a statute for Israel,
An ordinance of the God of Jacob.

5 He established it as a testimony in Joseph
When he (F1)(C1)went throughout the land of Egypt.
I heard a (C2)language I did not know:

6 "I (F1)(C1)relieved his shoulder of the burden,
His hands were freed from the (F2)basket.

7 "You (C1)called in trouble and I rescued you;
I (C2)answered you in the hiding place of thunder;
I put you to the test at the (C3)waters of Meribah. Selah

8 "(C1)Hear, My people, and I will admonish you;
Israel, if you (C2)would listen to Me!

9 "There shall be no (C1)strange god among you;
Nor shall you worship a foreign god.

10 "(C1)I, the LORD, am your God,
Who brought you up from the land of Egypt;
(C2)Open your mouth wide and I will (C3)fill it.

11 "But My people (C1)did not listen to My voice,
And Israel did not (F1)obey Me.

12 "So I (C1)gave (F1)them over to the stubbornness of their heart,
To walk by their own plans.

13 "Oh that My people (C1)would listen to Me,
That Israel would (C2)walk in My ways!

14 "I would quickly (C1)subdue their enemies
And (C2)turn My hand against their adversaries.

15 "(C1)Those who hate the LORD would (C2)pretend to obey Him,
And their time of punishment would be forever.

16 "(F1)But I would feed you with the (F2)(C1)finest of the wheat,
And with (C2)honey from the rock I would satisfy you."

John 16:4-33

Chapter 16

4 "But these things I have spoken to you, (C1)so that when their hour comes, you (F1)may remember that I told you of them. However, I did not say these things to you (C2)at the beginning, because I was with you.

The Holy Spirit Promised

5 "But now (C1)I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, '(C2)Where are You going?'6 "But because I have said these things to you, (C1)grief has filled your heart.7 "But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the (F1)(C1)Helper will not come to you; but if I go, (C2)I will send Him to you.8 "And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment:9 regarding sin, (C1)because they do not believe in Me;10 and regarding (C1)righteousness, because (C2)I am going to the Father and you no longer are going to see Me;11 (C1)and regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

12 "I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time.13 "But when He, (C1)the Spirit of truth, comes, He will (C2)guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.14 "He will (C1)glorify Me, for He will take from Mine and will disclose it to you.15 "(C1)All things that the Father has are Mine; this is why I said that He takes from Mine and will disclose it to you.

Jesus' Death and Resurrection Foretold

16 "(C1)A little while, and (C2)you no longer are going to see Me; and again a little while, and (C3)you will see Me."17 So some of His disciples said to one another, "What is this that He is telling us, '(C1)A little while, and you are not going to see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me'; and, 'because (C2)I am going to the Father'?"18 So they were saying, "What is this that He says, 'A little while'? We do not know what He is talking about."19 (C1)Jesus knew that they wanted to question Him, and He said to them, "Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, 'A little while, and you are not going to see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me'?20 "Truly, truly I say to you that (C1)you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but (C2)your grief will be turned into joy!21 "(C1)Whenever a woman is in labor she has (F1)pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a (F2)child has been born into the world.22 "Therefore (C1)you too have grief now; but (C2)I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one is going to take your joy away from you.

Prayer Promises

23 "And (C1)on that day (C2)you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly I say to you, (C3)if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you.24 "(C1)Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your (C2)joy may be made full.

25 "These things I have spoken to you in (C1)figures of speech; (C2)an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father.26 "(C1)On that day (C2)you will ask in My name, and I am not saying to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf;27 for (C1)the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and (C2)have believed that (C3)I came forth from the Father.28 "(C1)I came forth from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and (C2)going to the Father."

29 His disciples (*)said, "See, now You are speaking plainly and are not (F1)using any (C1)figure of speech.30 "Now we know that You know all things, and that You have no need for anyone to question You; this is why we (C1)believe that You (C2)came forth from God."31 Jesus replied to them, "Do you now believe?32 "Behold, (C1)an hour is coming, and has already come, for (C2)you to be scattered, each to (C3)his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet (C4)I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.33 "These things I have spoken to you so that (C1)in Me you may have peace. (C2)In the world you have tribulation, but (C3)take courage; (C4)I have overcome the world."
