2 Chronicles 23

Chapter 23

Jehoiada Sets Joash on the Throne of Judah

1 (C1)Now in the seventh year, Jehoiada gathered his courage, and took captains of hundreds: Azariah the son of Jeroham, Ishmael the son of Johanan, Azariah the son of Obed, Maaseiah the son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat the son of Zichri, and they entered into a covenant with him.2 And they went throughout Judah and gathered the Levites from all the cities of Judah, and the heads of the fathers' households of (C1)Israel, and they came to Jerusalem.3 Then all the assembly made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And (F1)Jehoiada said to them, "Behold, the king's son shall reign, (C1)as the LORD has spoken concerning the sons of David.4 "This is the thing which you shall do: a third of you, of the priests and Levites (C1)who come in on the Sabbath, shall be gatekeepers,5 and a third shall be at the king's house, and a third at the Gate of the Foundation; and all the people shall be in the courtyards of the house of the LORD.6 "But no one is to enter the house of the LORD except the priests and (C1)the ministering Levites; they may enter, for they are holy. And all the people are to keep the command of the LORD.7 "The Levites will surround the king, each man with his weapons in his hand; and whoever enters the house is to be put to death. Therefore be with the king when he comes in and when he goes out."

8 The Levites and all Judah did according to all that Jehoiada the priest commanded. And each one of them took his men who were to come in on the Sabbath, with those who were to go out on the Sabbath, for Jehoiada the priest did not dismiss any of (C1)the divisions.9 Then Jehoiada the priest gave the captains of hundreds the spears and the shields and quivers which had been King David's, which were in the house of God.10 He stationed all the people, each man with his weapon in his hand, from the right (F1)side of the house to the left (F1)side of the house, by the altar and by the house, around the king.11 Then they brought out the king's son and put the crown on him, and gave him (C1)the testimony and made him king. And Jehoiada and his sons anointed him and said, "(C2)Long live the king!"

Athaliah Murdered

12 When Athaliah heard the noise of the people running and praising the king, she went into the house of the LORD to the people.13 She looked, and behold, the king was standing by his pillar at the entrance, and the captains and the (F1)trumpeters were beside the king. And all the people of the land rejoiced and blew trumpets, the singers with their musical instruments (F2)leading the praise. Then Athaliah tore her clothes and said, "Conspiracy! Conspiracy!"14 And Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds who were appointed over the army, and said to them, "Bring her out (F1)between the ranks, and whoever follows her is to be put to death with the sword." For the priest said, "You shall not put her to death in the house of the LORD."15 So they (F1)seized her, and when she arrived at the entrance of (C1)the Horse Gate of the king's house, they (C2)put her to death there.

Reforms Carried Out

16 Then (C1)Jehoiada made a covenant between himself and all the people and the king, that they would be the LORD'S people.17 And all the people went to the house of Baal and tore it down, and they broke in pieces his altars and his images, and (C1)killed Mattan the priest of Baal before the altars.18 Moreover, Jehoiada placed the offices of the house of the LORD under the (F1)authority of (C1)the Levitical priests, (C2)whom David had assigned over the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the Law of Moses—(C3)with rejoicing and singing according to the (F2)order of David.19 He stationed (C1)the gatekeepers of the house of the LORD, so that no one would enter who was in any way unclean.20 (C1)He took the captains of hundreds, the nobles, the rulers of the people, and all the people of the land, and brought the king down from the house of the LORD, and went through the upper gate to the king's house. And they seated the king upon the royal throne.21 So (C1)all of the people of the land rejoiced and the city was at rest. For they had put Athaliah to death with the sword.

Psalms 80

Chapter 80

God Implored to Rescue His People from Their Calamities.

For the music director; set to (FA)El Shoshannim; (FB)Eduth. A Psalm of Asaph.

1 Listen, (C1)Shepherd of Israel,
Who leads (C2)Joseph like a flock;
You who (C3)are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!

2 Before (C1)Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, (C2)awaken Your power,
And come to save us!

3 God, (C1)restore us
And (C2)make Your face shine upon us, (F1)and we will be saved.

4 (C1)LORD God of armies,
(C2)How long will You (F1)be angry with the prayer of Your people?

5 You have fed them with the (C1)bread of tears,
And You have made them drink tears in (F1)large measure.

6 You make us (F1)an object of contention (C1)to our neighbors,
And our enemies laugh among themselves.

7 God of armies, restore us
And make Your face shine upon us, (F1)and we will be saved.

8 You removed a (C1)vine from Egypt;
You (C2)drove out the (F1)nations and (C3)planted it.

9 You (C1)cleared the ground before it,
And it (C2)took deep root and filled the land.

10 The mountains were covered with its shadow,
And (F1)the cedars of God with its (C1)branches.

11 It was sending out its branches (C1)to the sea
And its shoots to the Euphrates River.

12 Why have You (C1)broken down its (F1)hedges,
So that all who pass that way pick its fruit?

13 A boar from the forest (C1)eats it away,
And whatever moves in the field feeds on it.

14 God of armies, do (C1)turn back;
(C2)Look down from heaven and see, and take care of this vine,

15 The (F1)(C1)shoot which Your right hand has planted,
And of the (F2)son whom You have (F3)strengthened for Yourself.

16 It is (C1)burned with fire, it is cut down;
They perish from the (C2)rebuke of Your face.

17 Let (C1)Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand,
Upon the son of man whom You (C2)made strong for Yourself.

18 Then we will not (C1)turn back from You;
(C2)Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.

19 LORD God of armies, (C1)restore us;
Make Your face shine upon us, (F1)and we will be saved.

John 15:1-16:4

Chapter 15

Jesus Is the Vine—Followers Are Branches

1 "(C1)I am the true vine, and My Father is the (C2)vinedresser.2 "Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He (F1)prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.3 "(C1)You are already (F1)clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.4 "(C1)Remain in Me, (F1)and I in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit (F2)of itself (F3)but must remain in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in Me.5 "I am the vine, you are the branches; the one who remains in Me, and I in him (F1)(C1)bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.6 "If anyone does not remain in Me, he is (C1)thrown away like a branch and dries up; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.7 "If you remain in Me, and My words remain in you, (C1)ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.8 "My (C1)Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so (F1)(C2)prove to be My disciples.9 "Just as (C1)the Father has loved Me, I also have loved you; remain in My love.10 "(C1)If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love; just as (C2)I have kept My Father's commandments and remain in His love.11 "(C1)These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your (C2)joy may be made full.

Disciples' Relation to Each Other

12 "This is (C1)My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you.13 "(C1)Greater love has no one than this, that a person will (C2)lay down his life for his friends.14 "You are My (C1)friends if (C2)you do what I command you.15 "No longer do I call you slaves, for the slave does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, because (C1)all things that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.16 "(C1)You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and (C2)bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that (C3)whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.17 "This (C1)I command you, that you love one another.

Disciples' Relation to the World

18 "(C1)If the world hates you, (F1)you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.19 "If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but (C1)I chose you out of the world, (C2)because of this the world hates you.20 "Remember the word that I said to you, '(C1)A slave is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, (C2)they will persecute you as well; if they (C3)followed My word, they will follow yours also.21 "But all these things they will do to you (C1)on account of My name, (C2)because they do not know the One who sent Me.22 "(C1)If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have (F1)sin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.23 "The one who hates Me hates My Father also.24 "(C1)If I had not done among them (C2)the works which no one else did, they would not have (F1)sin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well.25 "But this has happened so that the word that is written in their (C1)Law will be fulfilled: '(C2)THEY HATED ME FOR NO REASON.'

26 "When the (F1)(C1)Helper comes, (C2)whom I will send to you from the Father, namely, (C3)the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, (C4)He will testify about Me,27 and (F1)(C1)you are testifying as well, because you have been with Me (C2)from the beginning.

Chapter 16

Jesus' Warning

1 "(C1)These things I have spoken to you so that you will not (F1)be (C2)led into sin.2 "They will (F1)(C1)ban you from the synagogue, yet (C2)an hour is coming for everyone (C3)who kills you to think that he is offering a (F2)service to God.3 "These things they will do (C1)because they have not known the Father nor Me.4 "But these things I have spoken to you, (C1)so that when their hour comes, you (F1)may remember that I told you of them. However, I did not say these things to you (C2)at the beginning, because I was with you.<
