2 Chronicles 12-13

Chapter 12

Shishak of Egypt Invades Judah

1 (C1)When the kingdom of Rehoboam was established and strong, (C2)he and all Israel with him abandoned the Law of the LORD.2 (C1)And it came about in King Rehoboam's fifth year, because they had been unfaithful to the LORD, that (C2)Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem3 with 1,200 chariots and sixty thousand horsemen. And the people who came with him from Egypt were innumerable: (C1)the Lubim, the Sukkiim, and the Ethiopians.4 And he captured (C1)the fortified cities of Judah and came as far as Jerusalem.5 Then (C1)Shemaiah the prophet came to Rehoboam and the princes of Judah who had gathered at Jerusalem because of Shishak, and he said to them, "This is what the LORD says: '(C2)You have abandoned Me, so I also have abandoned you (F1)to Shishak.'"6 So the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves and said, "The (C1)LORD is righteous."

7 When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the word of the LORD came to Shemaiah, saying, "(C1)They have humbled themselves, so I will not destroy them; and I will grant them a little deliverance, and (C2)My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem by means of Shishak.8 "But they will become his slaves, so (C1)that they may learn the difference between My service and the service of the kingdoms of the countries."

Plunder Impoverishes Judah

9 (C1)So Shishak king of Egypt went up against Jerusalem, and he took the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king's palace. He took everything; (C2)he even took the gold shields which Solomon had made.10 Then King Rehoboam made shields of bronze in their place and committed them to the (F1)care of the commanders of the (F2)guards who guarded the entrance of the king's house.11 As often as the king entered the house of the LORD, the (F1)guards came and carried them and then brought them back into the (F1)guards' room.12 And (C1)when he humbled himself, the anger of the LORD turned away from him, so as not to destroy him completely; and conditions (C2)were also good in Judah.

13 (C1)So King Rehoboam became powerful in Jerusalem and reigned there. For Rehoboam was forty-one years old when he began to reign, and he reigned for seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city which the LORD had chosen from all the tribes of Israel, to put His name there. And his mother's name was Naamah the Ammonitess.14 But he did evil (C1)because he did not set his heart to seek the LORD.

15 (C1)Now the acts of Rehoboam, from the first to the last, are they not written in the (F1)records of (C2)Shemaiah the prophet and of (C3)Iddo the seer, according to genealogical enrollment? And there were wars between Rehoboam and Jeroboam continually.16 And Rehoboam (F1)lay down with his fathers and was buried in the city of David; and his son (C1)Abijah became king in his place.

Chapter 13

Abijah Succeeds Rehoboam

1 (C1)In the eighteenth year of King Jeroboam, Abijah became king over Judah.

2 He reigned in Jerusalem for three years; and his mother's name was (F1)Micaiah the daughter of Uriel of Gibeah. (C1)Now there was war between Abijah and Jeroboam.3 Abijah began the battle with an army of warriors, four hundred thousand chosen men, while Jeroboam drew up in battle formation against him with eight hundred thousand chosen men who were valiant warriors.

Civil War

4 Then Abijah stood on Mount (C1)Zemaraim, which is in the hill country of Ephraim, and said, "Listen to me, Jeroboam and all Israel:5 "Do you not know that (C1)the LORD God of Israel gave the rule over Israel forever to David (F1)and his sons by (C2)a covenant of salt?6 "Yet (C1)Jeroboam the son of Nebat, the servant of Solomon the son of David, rose up and rebelled against his (F1)master,7 and worthless men gathered to him, wicked men, who proved too strong for Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, when (F1)(C1)he was young and timid and could not hold his own against them.

8 "So now you intend to assert yourselves against the kingdom of the LORD (F1)through the sons of David, (F2)being a great multitude and having with you (C1)the golden calves which Jeroboam made for you as gods.9 "(C1)Have you not driven out the priests of the LORD, the sons of Aaron and the Levites, and made for yourselves priests like the peoples of other lands? Whoever comes (C2)to consecrate himself with a bull and seven rams, even he may become a priest of things that are (C3)not gods.10 "But as for us, the LORD is our God, and we have not abandoned Him; and the sons of Aaron are ministering to the LORD as priests, and the Levites (F1)attend to their work.11 "Every morning and evening (C1)they (F1)burn to the LORD burnt offerings and fragrant incense, and (C2)the showbread is set on the clean table, and the golden lampstand with its lamps is ready to light every evening; for we perform our duty to the LORD our God, but you have abandoned Him.12 "Now behold, God is with us at our head, and (C1)His priests with the signal trumpets to sound the war cry against you. Sons of Israel, do not fight against the LORD God of your fathers, for you will not succeed."

13 But Jeroboam (C1)had set an ambush to come from behind, so that Israel was in front of Judah and the ambush was behind them.14 When Judah turned around, behold, (F1)they were attacked both from front and rear; so (C1)they cried out to the LORD, and the priests blew the trumpets.15 Then the men of Judah raised a war cry, and when the men of Judah raised the war cry, God (F1)(C1)defeated Jeroboam and all Israel before Abijah and Judah.16 When the sons of Israel fled from Judah, (C1)God handed them over to them.17 Abijah and his people defeated them with a great slaughter, so that five hundred thousand chosen men of Israel fell slain.18 The sons of Israel were subdued at that time, and the sons of Judah (F1)conquered (C1)because they trusted in the LORD, the God of their fathers.19 Abijah pursued Jeroboam and captured from him several cities, Bethel with its villages, Jeshanah with its villages, and (F1)Ephron with its villages.

Death of Jeroboam

20 Jeroboam did not again recover strength in the days of Abijah; and the (C1)LORD struck him and (C2)he died.

21 But Abijah became powerful, and he took fourteen wives for himself, and fathered twenty-two sons and sixteen daughters.22 Now the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways and his words are written in (C1)the (F1)treatise of (C2)Iddo the prophet.

Psalms 76

Chapter 76

The Victorious Power of the God of Jacob.

For the music director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of Asaph, a Song.

1 God is (C1)known in Judah;
His name is (C2)great in Israel.

2 His (F1)(C1)tabernacle is in (C2)Salem;
His (C3)dwelling place also is in Zion.

3 There He (C1)broke the (F1)flaming arrows,
The shield, the sword, and the (F2)weapons of war. Selah

4 You are resplendent,
(F1)More majestic than the mountains of prey.

5 The (C1)stouthearted were plundered,
(F1)They sank into sleep;
And none of the (F2)warriors could use his hands.

6 At Your (C1)rebuke, God of Jacob,
Both (F1)(C2)rider and horse were cast into a dead sleep.

7 You, You indeed are (C1)to be feared,
And (C2)who may stand in Your presence, (F1)once You are angry?

8 You caused judgment to be heard from heaven;
The earth (C1)feared and was still

9 When God (C1)arose to judgment,
To save all the humble of the earth. Selah

10 For the (F1)(C1)wrath of mankind shall praise You;
You will encircle Yourself with a remnant of wrath.

11 (C1)Make vows to the LORD your God and (C2)fulfill them;
All who are around Him are to (C3)bring gifts to Him who is to be feared.

12 He will cut off the spirit of princes;
He is (F1)(C1)feared by the kings of the earth.

John 11:28-57

Chapter 11

28 When she had said this, she (C1)left and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, "(C2)The Teacher is here and is calling for you."29 And when she heard this, she (*)got up quickly and came to Him.

30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but (C1)was still at the place where Martha met Him.31 (C1)Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were (C2)consoling her, when they saw that Mary had gotten up quickly and left, they followed her, thinking that she was going to the tomb to weep there.32 So when Mary came to the place where Jesus was, she saw Him and fell at His feet, saying to Him, "(C1)Lord, (C2)if You had been here, my brother would not have died."33 Therefore when Jesus saw her weeping, and (C1)the Jews who came with her also weeping, He (C2)was deeply moved in spirit and (F1)(C3)was troubled,34 and He said, "Where have you laid him?" They (*)said to Him, "Lord, come and see."35 Jesus (C1)wept.36 So (C1)the Jews were saying, "See how He (C2)loved him!"37 But some of them said, "Could this Man, who (C1)opened the eyes of the man who was blind, not have also (F1)kept this man from dying?"

38 So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, (*)came to the tomb. Now it was a (C1)cave, and a stone was lying against it.39 Jesus (*)said, "Remove the stone." Martha, the sister of the deceased, (*)said to Him, "Lord, by this time (F1)there will be a stench, for he has been dead (C1)four days."40 Jesus (*)said to her, "(C1)Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?"41 So they removed the (C1)stone. And Jesus (C2)raised His eyes, and said, "(C3)Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.42 "But I knew that You always hear Me; nevertheless, (C1)because of the (F1)people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that (C2)You sent Me."43 And when He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"44 Out came the man who had died, (C1)bound hand and foot with wrappings, and (C2)his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus (*)said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

45 (C1)Therefore many of the Jews (C2)who came to Mary, and (C3)saw what He had done, believed in Him.46 But some of them went to the (C1)Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.

Conspiracy to Kill Jesus

47 Therefore (C1)the chief priests and the Pharisees (C2)convened a (C3)council meeting, and they were saying, "What are we (F1)doing in regard to the fact that this Man is performing many (F2)(C4)signs?48 "If we let Him go on like this, all the people will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and take over both our (F1)(C1)place and our nation."49 But one of them, (C1)Caiaphas, (C2)who was high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,50 nor are you taking into account that (C1)it is in your best interest that one man die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish instead."51 Now he did not say this (F1)on his own, but (C1)as he was high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation;52 and not for the nation only, but in order that He might also (C1)gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.53 So from that day on they (C1)planned together to kill Him.

54 Therefore Jesus (C1)no longer continued to walk publicly among the Jews, but went away from there to the region near the wilderness, into a city called (C2)Ephraim; and there He stayed with the disciples.

55 Now (C1)the Passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem from the country prior to the Passover, (C2)in order to (F1)purify themselves.56 So they (C1)were looking for Jesus, and saying to one another as they stood in the temple area, "What do you think; that He will not come to the feast at all?"57 Now (C1)the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where He was, he was to report it, so that they might arrest Him.
