1 Chronicles 10-11

Chapter 10

Defeat and Death of Saul and His Sons

1 (C1)Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled from the Philistines but fell fatally wounded on Mount Gilboa.2 And the Philistines also overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines (F1)killed Jonathan, (F2)(C1)Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.3 The battle became severe against Saul, and the archers found him; and he was wounded by the archers.4 Then Saul said to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, otherwise these uncircumcised Philistines will come and abuse me." But his armor bearer would not, for he was very afraid. (C1)So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.5 When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword and died.6 (C1)So Saul died with his three sons, and all those of his house died together.

7 When all the people of Israel who were in the valley saw that they had fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled; and the Philistines came and lived in them.

8 It came about the next day, when the Philistines came to strip those killed, that they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.9 (C1)So they stripped him and took his head and his armor and sent messengers around the land of the Philistines to carry the good news to their idols and to the people.10 They put his armor in the house of their gods and (F1)impaled his head in the house of Dagon.

Jabesh-gilead's Tribute to Saul

11 When all Jabesh-gilead heard everything that the Philistines had done to Saul,12 (C1)all the valiant men got up and took away the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh; and they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted for seven days.

13 (C1)So Saul died for his unfaithfulness which he committed against the LORD, because of the word of the LORD which he did not keep; and also (C2)because he asked counsel of a medium, making inquiry of her,14 and did not inquire of the LORD. Therefore He killed him and (C1)turned the kingdom over to David, the son of Jesse.

Chapter 11

David Made King over All Israel

1 (C1)Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron (F1)and said, "Behold, we are your bone and your flesh.2 "In times past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led out and brought in Israel; and the LORD your God said to you, '(C1)You shall shepherd My people Israel, and you shall be leader over My people Israel.'"3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and (C1)they anointed David king over Israel, (C2)in accordance with the word of the LORD through Samuel.

Jerusalem Is the Capital City

4 Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem ((C1)that is, Jebus); and the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land, were there.5 The inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You shall not enter here." Nevertheless David took the mountain stronghold of Zion (that is, the city of David).6 Now David had said, "Whoever is first to (F1)kill a Jebusite shall be chief and commander." (C1)Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, so he became chief.7 Then David lived in the stronghold; therefore it was called the city of David.8 He (F1)built the city all around, from the (F2)Millo to the surrounding area; and Joab (F3)repaired the rest of the city.9 (C1)And David became greater and greater, for the LORD of armies was with him.

David's Mighty Men

10 (C1)Now these are the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who remained faithful to him in his kingdom, together with all Israel, to make him king, (C2)in accordance with the word of the LORD concerning Israel.11 These constitute the list of David's mighty men: (C1)Jashobeam, the son of a Hachmonite, (C2)the chief of the thirty; he wielded his spear against three hundred (F1)whom he killed at one time.

12 After him was Eleazar the son of (C1)Dodo, the Ahohite, who was (F1)one of the three mighty men.13 He was with David at (F1)Pas-dammim (C1)when the Philistines were gathered together there to battle, and there was a plot of land full of barley; and the people fled from the Philistines.14 But they took their stand in the midst of the plot and defended it, and defeated the Philistines; and the LORD saved them with a great (F1)victory.

15 Now three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam, while (C1)the army of the Philistines was camping in the Valley of Rephaim.16 David was then in the stronghold, while (C1)the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.17 And David had a craving and said, "Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!"18 So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water from the well of Bethlehem which was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David; however, David would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD;19 and he said, "Far be it from me before my God that I would do this. Shall I drink the blood of these men who went (F1)at the risk of their lives? For they brought it at the risk of their lives." Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.

20 As for (F1)Abshai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the (F2)thirty, and he wielded his spear against three hundred (F3)and killed them; and he had a name (F4)as well as the (F2)thirty.21 Of the three in the second rank he was the most honored, and he became their commander; however, he did not attain the reputation of the first three.

22 (C1)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a warrior of Kabzeel, mighty in deeds, struck and killed the (F1)two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and struck and killed a lion inside a pit on a snowy day.23 And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great stature (F1)five cubits tall. Now in the Egyptian's hand was (C1)a spear like a weaver's beam, but he went down to him with a club and snatched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with his own spear.24 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did these things, and had a name (F1)as well as the three mighty men.25 Behold, he was honored among the thirty, but he did not attain the reputation of the first three; and David appointed him over his bodyguard.

26 Now the mighty men of the armies were Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,27 (F1)Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the (F2)Pelonite,28 Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite,29 (F1)Sibbecai the Hushathite, (F2)Ilai the Ahohite,30 Maharai the Netophathite, (F1)Heled the son of Baanah the Netophathite,31 Ithai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the sons of Benjamin, Benaiah the Pirathonite,32 (F1)Hurai of the brooks of Gaash, (F2)Abiel the Arbathite,33 Azmaveth the Baharumite, Eliahba the Shaalbonite,34 the sons of (F1)Hashem the Gizonite, Jonathan the son of Shagee the Hararite,35 Ahiam the son of (F1)Sacar the Hararite, (F2)Eliphal the son of Ur,36 Hepher the Mecherathite, Ahijah the Pelonite,37 Hezro the Carmelite, (F1)Naarai the son of Ezbai,38 Joel the brother of Nathan, Mibhar the son of Hagri,39 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the armor bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah,40 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite,41 Uriah the Hittite, Zabad the son of Ahlai,42 Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite, a chief of the Reubenites, and thirty with him,43 Hanan the son of Maacah and Joshaphat the Mithnite,44 Uzzia the Ashterathite, Shama and Jeiel the sons of Hotham the Aroerite,45 Jediael the son of Shimri and his brother Joha the Tizite,46 Eliel the Mahavite, and Jeribai and Joshaviah, the sons of Elnaam, Ithmah the Moabite,47 Eliel, Obed, and Jaasiel the Mezobaite.

Zechariah 1

Chapter 1

A Call to Repentance

1 In the eighth month of the second year of (C1)Darius, the word of the LORD came to (C2)Zechariah the prophet, the son of Berechiah, the son of (C3)Iddo saying,2 "The LORD was very (C1)angry with your fathers.3 "Therefore say to them, 'This is what the LORD of armies says: "(C1)Return to Me," declares the LORD of armies, "(F1)that I may return to you," says the LORD of armies.4 "Do not be (C1)like your fathers, to whom the (C2)former prophets proclaimed, saying, 'This is what the LORD of armies says: "(C3)Return now from your evil ways and from your evil deeds."' But they did (C4)not listen or pay attention to Me," declares the LORD.5 "Your (C1)fathers, where are they? And the (C2)prophets, do they live forever?6 "But did My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, not (F1)(C1)overtake your fathers? Then they repented and said, '(C2)Just as the LORD of armies planned to do to us in accordance with our ways and our deeds, so He has dealt with us.'"'"

Patrol of the Earth

7 On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, that is, the month Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Zechariah the prophet, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, (F1)as follows:8 I saw at night, and behold, a man was riding on a (C1)red horse, and he was standing among the (C2)myrtle trees which were in the ravine, with red, (F1)sorrel, and (C3)white horses behind him.9 Then I said, "What are these, my (C1)lord?" And the (C2)angel who was speaking with me said to me, "I will show you what these are."10 And the man who was standing among the myrtle trees responded and said, "These are the ones whom the LORD has sent to (F1)(C1)patrol the earth."11 So they responded to the angel of the LORD who was (C1)standing among the myrtle trees and said, "We have (F1)patrolled the earth, and behold, (C2)all the earth is (F2)still and quiet."

12 Then the angel of the LORD said, "LORD of armies, (C1)how long will You (C2)take no pity on Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, with which You have been (C3)indignant for these (C4)seventy years?"13 And the LORD responded to the (C1)angel who was speaking with me with (F1)gracious words, (C2)comforting words.14 So the angel who was speaking with me said to me, "(C1)Proclaim, saying, 'This is what the LORD of armies says: "I am (C2)exceedingly jealous for Jerusalem and Zion.15 "But I am very (C1)angry with the nations who are (C2)carefree; for while I was only a little angry, they (F1)(C3)furthered the disaster."16 'Therefore the LORD says this: "I will (C1)return to Jerusalem with compassion; My (C2)house will be built in it," declares the LORD of armies, "and a measuring (C3)line will be stretched over Jerusalem."'17 "Again, proclaim, saying, 'This is what the LORD of armies says: "My (C1)cities will again overflow with prosperity, and the LORD will again (C2)comfort Zion and again (C3)choose Jerusalem."'"

18 (F1)Then I raised my eyes and looked, and behold, there were four horns.19 So I said to the angel who was speaking with me, "What are these?" And he said to me, "These are the (C1)horns that have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem."20 Then the LORD showed me four (C1)craftsmen.21 And I said, "What are these coming to do?" And he said, "These are the (C1)horns that have scattered Judah so that no one lifts up his head; but these craftsmen have come to frighten them, to (C2)throw down the horns of the nations who have lifted up their horns against the land of Judah in order to scatter it."

John 2

Chapter 2

Miracle at Cana

1 On (C1)the third day there was a wedding in (C2)Cana of Galilee, and the (C3)mother of Jesus was there;2 and both Jesus and His (C1)disciples were invited to the wedding.3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus (*)said to Him, "They have no wine."4 And Jesus (*)said to her, "(F1)(C1)What business do you have with Me, (C2)woman? (C3)My hour has not yet come."5 His (C1)mother (*)said to the servants, "Whatever He tells you, do it."6 Now there were six stone waterpots standing there (C1)for the Jewish custom of purification, containing (F1)two or three measures each.7 Jesus (*)said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim.8 And He (*)said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the (F1)headwaiter." And they took it to him.9 Now when the headwaiter tasted the water (C1)which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter (*)called the groom,10 and (*)said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when the guests (C1)are drunk, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now."11 This beginning of His (F1)(C1)signs Jesus did in Cana of (C2)Galilee, and revealed His (C3)glory; and His disciples believed in Him.

12 After this He went down to (C1)Capernaum, He and His (C2)mother, and His (C2)brothers and His (C3)disciples; and they stayed there a few days.

First Passover—Cleansing the Temple

13 (C1)The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus (C2)went up to Jerusalem.14 (C1)And within the temple grounds He found those who were selling oxen, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.15 And He made a whip of (F1)cords, and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables;16 and to those who were selling (C1)the doves He said, "Take these things away from here; stop making (C2)My Father's house a (F1)place of business!"17 His (C1)disciples remembered that it was written: "(C2)ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME."18 (C1)The Jews then said to Him, "(C2)What sign do You show us (F1)as Your authority for doing these things?"19 Jesus answered them, "(C1)Destroy this (F1)temple, and in three days I will raise it up."20 (C1)The Jews then said, "It took (C2)forty-six years to build this (F1)temple, and yet You will raise it up in three days?"21 But He was speaking about (C1)the (F1)temple of His body.22 So when He was raised from the dead, His (C1)disciples (C2)remembered that He said this; and they believed (C3)the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken.

23 Now when He was in Jerusalem at (C1)the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name as they (C2)observed His signs which He was doing.24 But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, because (C1)He knew all people,25 and because He did not need anyone to testify about mankind, (C1)for He Himself knew what was in mankind.
