Isaiah 19:11-24:6
Chapter 19
11 The officials of (F1)(C1)Zoan are mere fools;
The advice of Pharaoh's wisest advisers has become (F2)stupid.
How can you say to Pharaoh,
"I am a son of the (C2)wise, a son of ancient kings"?
12 Well then, where are your wise men?
Please let them tell you,
And let them (F1)understand what the LORD of armies
Has (C1)planned against Egypt.
13 The officials of (F1)Zoan have turned out to be fools,
The officials of (C1)Memphis are deluded;
Those who are the (C2)cornerstone of her tribes
Have (F2)led Egypt astray.
14 The LORD has mixed within her a spirit of (C1)distortion;
(C2)They have led Egypt astray in all (F1)that it does,
As a (C3)drunken person (F2)staggers in his vomit.
15 There will be no work for Egypt
(C1)Which its head or tail, its palm branch or bulrush, may do.
16 On that day the Egyptians will become like women, and they will tremble and be in great (C1)fear because of the (C2)waving of the hand of the LORD of armies, which He is going to wave over them.17 The land of Judah will become a cause of shame to Egypt; everyone to whom it is mentioned will be in great fear because of the (C1)plan of the LORD of armies which He is making against them.
18 On that day five cities in the land of Egypt will be speaking the language of Canaan and (C1)swearing allegiance to the LORD of armies; one will be called the City of (F1)Destruction.
19 On that day there will be an (C1)altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a (C2)memorial stone to the LORD beside its border.20 And it will become a sign and a witness to the LORD of armies in the land of Egypt; for they will cry out to the LORD because of oppressors, and He will send them a (C1)Savior and a (C2)Champion, and He will save them.21 So the LORD will make Himself known to Egypt, and the Egyptians will know the LORD on that day. They will even worship with (C1)sacrifice and offering, and will make a vow to the LORD and perform it.22 And the LORD will strike Egypt, striking but (C1)healing; so they will (C2)return to the LORD, and He will respond to their pleas and heal them.
23 On that day there will be a (C1)road from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrians will come into Egypt and the Egyptians into Assyria; and the Egyptians will (C2)worship with the Assyrians.
24 On that day Israel will be the third party to Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth,25 whom the LORD of armies has blessed, saying, "Blessed is (C1)Egypt My people, and Assyria (C2)the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance."
Chapter 20
Prophecy about Egypt and Ethiopia
1 In the year that the (F1)(C1)commander came to (C2)Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him and he fought against Ashdod and captured it,2 at that time the LORD spoke through (C1)Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, "Go and loosen the (C2)sackcloth from your hips and take your (C3)sandals off your feet." And he did so, going (C4)naked and barefoot.3 Then the LORD said, "Even as My servant Isaiah has gone naked and barefoot for three years as a (C1)sign and symbol against Egypt and (F1)(C2)Cush,4 so the (C1)king of Assyria will lead away the captives of Egypt and the exiles of Cush, (C2)young and old, naked and barefoot with buttocks uncovered, to the (F1)shame of Egypt.5 "Then they will be (C1)terrified and ashamed because of Cush their hope and Egypt their (C2)pride.6 "So the inhabitants of this coastland will say on that day, 'Behold, such is our hope, where we fled (C1)for help to be saved from the king of Assyria; and (C2)how are we ourselves to escape?'"
Chapter 21
God Commands That Babylon Be Taken
1 The (C1)pronouncement concerning the (F1)(C2)wilderness of the sea: As (C3)windstorms in the (F2)Negev come in turns,
It comes from the wilderness, from a terrifying land.
2 A (C1)harsh vision has been shown to me;
The (C2)treacherous one still deals treacherously, and the destroyer still destroys.
Go up, (C3)Elam, lay siege, Media;
I have put an end to all (F1)the groaning she has caused.
3 For this reason my (C1)loins are full of anguish;
Pains have seized me like the pains of a (C2)woman in labor.
I am so bewildered I cannot hear, so terrified I cannot see.
4 My (F1)mind reels, (F2)horror overwhelms me;
The twilight I longed for has been (C1)turned into trembling for me.
5 They (C1)set the table, they (F1)spread out the cloth, they eat, they drink;
"Rise up, captains, oil the shields!"
"Go, station the lookout, have him (C1)report what he sees.
7 "When he sees (F1)a (C1)column of chariots, horsemen in pairs,
A train of donkeys, a train of camels,
He is to pay close attention, very close attention."
"(C1)Lord, I stand continually by day on the watchtower,
And I am stationed every night at my guard post.
9 "Now behold, here comes a troop of riders, horsemen in pairs."
And one said, "(C1)Fallen, fallen is Babylon;
And all the (C2)images of her gods (F1)are shattered on the ground."
10 My (C1)downtrodden people, and my (F1)afflicted of the threshing floor!
What I have heard from the LORD of armies,
The God of Israel, I make known to you.
Pronouncements about Edom and Arabia
11 The pronouncement concerning (F1)(C1)Edom: One keeps calling to me from (C2)Seir,
"Watchman, (F2)how far gone is the night?
Watchman, (F2)how far gone is the night?"
12 The watchman says,
"Morning comes but also night.
If you would inquire, inquire;
Come back again."
13 The pronouncement about (C1)Arabia: In the thickets of Arabia you (F1)must spend the night,
You caravans of (C2)Dedanites.
14 Bring water (F1)for the thirsty,
You inhabitants of the land of (C1)Tema;
Meet the fugitive with bread.
15 For they have (C1)fled from the swords,
From the drawn sword, and from the bent bow,
And from the press of battle.
16 For this is what the Lord said to me: "In a (C1)year, as (F1)a hired worker would count it, all the splendor of (C2)Kedar will come to an end;17 and the (C1)remainder of the number of bowmen, the warriors of the sons of Kedar, will be few; for the LORD God of Israel (C2)has spoken."
Chapter 22
The Valley of Vision
1 The pronouncement concerning the (C1)valley of vision: What is the matter with you now, that you have all gone up to the (C2)housetops?
2 You who were full of noise,
You tumultuous town, you (C1)jubilant city;
Your dead were (C2)not killed with the sword,
Nor (F1)did they die in battle.
3 (C1)All your rulers have fled together,
And have been captured (F1)without the bow;
All of you who were found were taken captive together,
(F2)Though they had fled far away.
4 Therefore I say, "Look away from me,
Let me (C1)weep bitterly,
Do not (F1)try to comfort me concerning the destruction of the daughter of my people."
5 (C1)For the Lord (F1)GOD of armies has a (C2)day of panic, (C3)subjugation, and confusion
(C4)In the valley of vision,
A breaking down of walls
And a crying (F2)to the mountain.
6 (C1)Elam picked up the quiver,
With the chariots, (F1)infantry, and horsemen;
And (C2)Kir uncovered the shield.
7 Then your choicest valleys were full of chariots,
And the horsemen took positions at the gate.
8 And He removed the (F1)defense of Judah.
On that day you (F2)depended on the weapons of the (C1)house of the forest,
9 And you saw that the breaches
In the wall of the city of David were many;
And you (C1)collected the waters of the lower pool.
10 Then you counted the houses of Jerusalem
And tore down houses to fortify the wall.
11 And you made a reservoir (C1)between the two walls
For the waters of the (C2)old pool.
But you did not (F1)depend on Him who made it,
Nor did you (F2)take into consideration Him who planned it long ago.
12 Therefore on that day the Lord (F1)GOD of armies called you to (C1)weeping, to wailing,
To (C2)shaving the head, and to wearing sackcloth.
13 Instead, there is (C1)joy and jubilation,
Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep,
Eating of meat and drinking of wine:
"(C2)Let's eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die."
14 But the LORD of armies revealed Himself (F1)to me:
"Certainly this (C1)wrongdoing (C2)will not be (F2)forgiven you
(C3)Until you die," says the Lord (F3)GOD of armies.
15 This is what the Lord (F1)GOD of armies says: "Come, go to this steward,
To (C1)Shebna who is in charge of the royal household,
16 'What right do you have here,
And whom do you have here,
That you have (C1)cut out a tomb for yourself here,
You who cut out a tomb on the height,
You who carve a resting place for (F1)yourself in the rock?
17 'Behold, the LORD is about to hurl you violently, you strong man.
And He is about to grasp you firmly
18 And wrap you up tightly like a ball,
To be (C1)driven into a vast country;
There you will die,
And there your splendid chariots will be,
You shame of your master's house!'
19 "I will (C1)depose you from your office,
And (F1)I will pull you down from your position.
20 "Then it will come about on that day,
That I will summon My servant (C1)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah,
21 And I will clothe him with your tunic
And tie your sash securely around him.
I will hand your (F1)authority over to him,
And he will become a (C1)father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
22 "Then I will put (C1)the key of the (C2)house of David on his shoulder;
When he opens, no one will shut,
When he shuts, no one will (C3)open.
23 "I will drive him like a (C1)peg in a firm place,
And he will become a (C2)throne of glory to his father's house.
Chapter 23
The Fall of Tyre
1 The pronouncement concerning (C1)Tyre: Wail, you (C2)ships of (C3)Tarshish,
For Tyre is destroyed, without house or (F1)(C4)harbor;
It is reported to them from the land of (F2)(C5)Cyprus.
2 (C1)Be silent, you inhabitants of the coastland,
You merchants of Sidon;
(F1)Your messengers crossed the sea
3 And were on many waters.
(C1)The grain of the (F1)(C2)Nile, the harvest of the River was her revenue;
And she was the (C3)market of nations.
4 Be ashamed, (C1)Sidon,
For the sea speaks, the stronghold of the sea, saying,
"I have neither been in labor nor given birth,
I have neither brought up young men nor raised virgins."
5 When the report reaches Egypt,
They will be in (C1)anguish over the report of Tyre.
6 Pass over to (C1)Tarshish;
Wail, you inhabitants of the coastland.
7 Is this your (C1)jubilant city,
Whose origin is from antiquity,
Whose feet used to bring her to (F1)colonize distant places?
8 Who has planned this against Tyre, (C1)the bestower of crowns,
Whose merchants were princes, whose traders were the honored of the earth?
9 (C1)The LORD of armies has planned it, to (C2)defile the pride of all beauty,
To despise all the (C3)honored of the earth.
10 (F1)Overflow your land like the Nile, you daughter of Tarshish,
There is no more (F2)restraint.
11 He has (C1)stretched His hand out (C2)over the sea,
He has (C3)made the kingdoms tremble;
The LORD has given a command concerning Canaan to (C4)demolish its strongholds.
12 He has said, "(C1)You shall not be jubilant anymore, you crushed virgin daughter of Sidon.
Arise, pass over to (F1)(C2)Cyprus; even there you will find no rest."
13 Behold, the land of the Chaldeans—this is the people that did not exist; (C1)Assyria allocated it for (C2)desert creatures—they erected their siege towers, they stripped its palaces, (C3)they made it a ruin.
14 Wail, you (C1)ships of Tarshish,
For your stronghold is destroyed.
16 Take your harp, wander around the city,
You forgotten prostitute;
Pluck the strings skillfully, sing many songs,
That you may be remembered.
Chapter 24
Judgment on the Earth
1 Behold, the LORD (C1)lays the earth waste, devastates it, twists its surface, and scatters its inhabitants.2 And the people will be like the priest, the servant like his master, the female servant like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the (C1)creditor like the debtor.3 The earth will be completely laid waste and completely plundered, for the LORD has spoken this word.4 The (C1)earth dries up and crumbles away, the mainland dries out and crumbles away, the (C2)exalted of the people of the earth dwindle.5 The earth is also (C1)defiled (F1)by its inhabitants, for they violated laws, altered statutes, and (C2)broke the everlasting covenant.6 Therefore, a (C1)curse devours the earth, and those who live on it suffer for their guilt. Therefore, the (C2)inhabitants of the earth decrease in number, and few people are left.<
