2 Kings 17

Chapter 17

Hoshea Reigns over Israel

1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah, (C1)Hoshea the son of Elah became king over Israel in Samaria, and reigned for nine years.2 He did evil in the sight of the LORD, only not as the kings of Israel who preceded him.3 (C1)Shalmaneser the king of Assyria marched (C2)against him, and Hoshea became his servant and paid him tribute.4 But the king of Assyria uncovered a conspiracy by Hoshea, who had sent messengers to So, king of Egypt, and had then brought no tribute to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year; so the king of Assyria arrested him and confined him in prison.

5 Then the king of Assyria invaded the entire land, and went up to (C1)Samaria and besieged it for three years.

Israel Captive

6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, (C1)the king of Assyria captured Samaria and (C2)led the people of Israel into exile to Assyria, and (C3)settled them in Halah and Habor, on the river of (C4)Gozan, and (C5)in the cities of the Medes.

Why Israel Fell

7 Now (C1)this came about because the sons of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, (C2)who had brought them up from the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; (C3)and they had (F1)feared other gods.8 They also (F1)(C1)followed the (F2)customs of the nations whom the LORD had driven out from the sons of Israel, and in the customs (C2)of the kings of Israel which they had (F3)introduced.9 And the sons of Israel (F1)did things secretly against the LORD their God which were not right. Moreover, they built for themselves high places in all their towns, from (C1)watchtower to fortified city.10 And (C1)they set up for themselves memorial stones and (F1)(C2)Asherim on every high hill and under every green tree,11 and there they burned incense on all the high places as the nations did that the LORD had taken into exile before them; and they did evil things, provoking the LORD.12 They served idols, (C1)concerning which the LORD had said to them, "You shall not do this thing."13 Yet the (C1)LORD warned Israel and Judah (F1)(C2)through all His prophets and (C3)every seer, saying, "(C4)Turn back from your evil ways and keep My commandments and My statutes in accordance with all the Law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you (F1)through My servants the prophets."14 However, they did not listen, but (C1)stiffened their neck (F1)like their fathers, who did not believe in the LORD their God.15 (C1)They rejected His statutes and (C2)His covenant which He made with their fathers, and His warnings which He (F1)gave them. And (C3)they followed (F2)idols and (C4)became empty, and followed the nations that surrounded them, about which the (C5)LORD had commanded them not to do as they did.16 And they abandoned all the commandments of the LORD their God and made for themselves cast metal images: (C1)two calves. And they (C2)made an (F1)Asherah, and (C3)worshiped all the heavenly (F2)lights, and (C4)served Baal.17 Then (C1)they made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, and they (C2)practiced divination and interpreting omens, and (C3)gave themselves over to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him.18 So the LORD was very angry with Israel, and He (C1)removed them from His (F1)sight; (C2)no one was left except the tribe of Judah.

19 (C1)Judah did not keep the commandments of the LORD their God either, but they (F1)(C2)followed the (F2)customs (F3)which Israel had (F4)introduced.20 So the LORD rejected all the (F1)descendants of Israel and afflicted them and (C1)handed them over to plunderers, until He had cast them (F2)out of His sight.

21 When (C1)He had torn Israel from the house of David, (C2)they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king. Then (C3)Jeroboam drove Israel away from following the LORD and misled them into a great sin.22 And the sons of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he committed; they did not desist from them23 (C1)until the LORD removed Israel from His sight, (C2)just as He had spoken through all His servants the prophets. (C1)So Israel went into exile from their own land to Assyria until this day.

Cities of Israel Filled with Strangers

24 (C1)Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, (F1)(C2)Avva, (C3)Hamath, and Sepharvaim, and settled them in the cities of Samaria in place of the sons of Israel. So they took possession of Samaria and lived in its cities.25 And at the beginning of their living there, they (C1)did not fear the LORD; therefore the LORD sent lions among them that were killing some of them.26 So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, "The nations whom you have taken into exile and settled in the cities of Samaria do not know the custom of the God of the land; so He has sent lions among them, and behold, they are killing them because they do not know the custom of the God of the land."

27 Then the king of Assyria issued commands, saying, "Take one of the priests there whom you led into (F1)exile, and have (F2)him go and live there; and have him teach them the custom of the God of the land."28 So one of the priests whom they had led into exile from Samaria came and lived in Bethel, and taught them how they were to fear the LORD.

29 But every nation was still making gods of its own, and they put them (C1)in the houses of the high places which the people of Samaria had made, every nation in their cities in which they lived.30 (C1)The men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima,31 and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak; and (C1)the Sepharvites were burning their children in the fire to (C2)Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of (C3)Sepharvaim.32 (C1)They also feared the LORD and (F1)(C2)appointed from their entire population priests of the high places, who acted for them in the houses of the high places.33 They feared the LORD, yet they were serving their own gods in accordance with the custom of the nations from among whom they had been taken into exile.

34 To this day they act in accordance with the earlier customs: they do not fear the LORD, nor do they (F1)follow their statutes, their ordinances, the Law, or the commandments which the LORD commanded the sons of Jacob, (C1)whom He named Israel.35 The LORD made a covenant with them and commanded them, saying, "(C1)You shall not fear other gods, nor (C2)bow down to them, nor (C3)serve them, nor sacrifice to them.36 "But the LORD, (C1)who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power and with (C2)an outstretched arm, (C3)Him you shall fear, and to Him you shall bow down, and to Him you shall sacrifice.37 "And the statutes, the ordinances, the Law, and the commandment which He wrote for you, (C1)you shall take care to do always; and you shall not fear other gods.38 "The covenant that I have made with you, (C1)you shall not forget, nor shall you fear other gods.39 "But you shall fear the LORD your God; and He will save you from the hand of all your enemies."40 However, they did not listen, but they kept acting in accordance with their earlier custom.41 (C1)So while these nations feared the LORD, they also served their (F1)idols; their children likewise and their grandchildren, just as their fathers did, they do to this day.

Micah 6

Chapter 6

God's Indictment of His People

1 Hear now what the LORD is saying,
"Arise, plead your case (F1)before the mountains,
And let the hills hear your voice.

2 "Listen, you mountains, to the indictment by the LORD,
And you enduring (C1)foundations of the earth,
Because the (C2)LORD has a case against His people;
And He will dispute with Israel.

3 "(C1)My people, (C2)what have I done to you,
And (C3)how have I wearied you? Answer Me.

4 "Indeed, I (C1)brought you up from the land of Egypt,
I (C2)redeemed you from the house of slavery,
And I sent before you (C3)Moses, Aaron, and (C4)Miriam.

5 "My people, remember now
What (C1)Balak king of Moab planned
And what Balaam son of Beor answered him,
And what happened from (C2)Shittim to (C3)Gilgal,
(F1)So that you might know the (C4)righteous acts of the LORD."

What God Requires of Mankind

6 (C1)With what shall I come to the LORD
And bow myself before the God on high?
Shall I come to Him with (C2)burnt offerings,
With yearling calves?

7 Does the LORD take pleasure in (C1)thousands of rams,
In ten thousand rivers of (F1)oil?
Shall I give Him my (C2)firstborn for my wrongdoings,
The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

8 He has (C1)told you, mortal one, what is good;
And (C2)what does the LORD require of you
But to (C3)do justice, to (C4)love (F1)kindness,
And to walk (F2)(C5)humbly with your God?

9 The voice of the LORD will call to the city—
And it is sound wisdom to fear Your name:
"(F1)Hear, you tribe. Who has designated (F2)its time?

10 "Is there still a person in the wicked house,
Along with treasures of (C1)wickedness,
And a (F1)(C2)short measure that is cursed?

11 "Can I justify dishonest (C1)balances,
And a bag of fraudulent weights?

12 "For the rich people of (F1)the city are full of (C1)violence,
Her residents speak (C2)lies,
And their (C3)tongue is deceitful in their mouth.

13 "So also I will make you (C1)sick, striking you down,
(C2)Making you desolate because of your sins.

14 "You will eat, but you will (C1)not be satisfied,
And your filth will be in your midst.
You will try to remove valuables for safekeeping,
But you will (C2)not save it all,
And what you do save I will turn over to the sword.

15 "You will sow but you will (C1)not harvest.
You will tread the olive press but will not anoint yourself with oil;
And tread out sweet wine, but you will (C2)not drink any wine.

16 "The statutes of (C1)Omri
And every work of the house of (C2)Ahab are maintained,
And you (C3)walk by their plans.
Therefore I will give you up for (C4)destruction,
And (F1)your inhabitants for (F2)(C5)derision,
And you will suffer the (C6)taunting of My people."

2 Corinthians 4:1-5:10

Chapter 4

Paul's Apostolic Ministry

1 Therefore, since we have this (C1)ministry, as we (C2)received mercy, we (C3)do not lose heart,2 but we have renounced the (C1)things hidden because of shame, not walking in trickery nor (C2)distorting the word of God, but by the open proclamation of the truth (C3)commending ourselves to every person's conscience in the sight of God.3 And even if our (C1)gospel is (C2)veiled, it is veiled (F1)to (C3)those who are perishing,4 in whose case (C1)the god of (C2)this (F1)world has (C3)blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that (F2)they will not see the (C4)light of the gospel of the (C5)glory of Christ, who is the (C6)image of God.5 For we (C1)do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants (F1)on account of Jesus.6 For God, who said, "(C1)Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who has (C2)shone in our hearts to give the (C3)Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

7 But we have this treasure in (F1)(C1)earthen containers, so that the extraordinary greatness of (C2)the power will be of God and not from ourselves;8 we are (C1)afflicted in every way, but not (C2)crushed; (C3)perplexed, but not despairing;9 (C1)persecuted, but not (C2)abandoned; (C3)struck down, but not destroyed;10 (C1)always carrying around in the body the dying of Jesus, so that (C2)the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.11 For we who live are constantly being handed over to death because of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our mortal flesh.12 So death works in us, but life in you.

13 But having the same (C1)spirit of faith, according to what is written: "(C2)I BELIEVED, THEREFORE I SPOKE," we also believe, therefore we also speak,14 knowing that He who (C1)raised the Lord Jesus (C2)will also raise us with Jesus, and will (C3)present us with you.15 For all things are (C1)for your sakes, so that grace, having (F1)(C2)spread to more and more people, will cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.

16 Therefore we (C1)do not lose heart, but though our outer person is decaying, yet our (C2)inner person is (C3)being renewed day by day.17 For our momentary, (C1)light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,18 while we (C1)look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Chapter 5

The Temporal and Eternal

1 For we know that if our (F1)(C1)earthly (C2)tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house (C3)not made by hands, eternal in the heavens.2 For indeed, in this tent we (C1)groan, longing to be (C2)clothed with our (F1)dwelling from heaven,3 since in fact after putting it on, we will not be found naked.4 For indeed, we who are in this tent (C1)groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be (C2)clothed, so that what is (C3)mortal will be swallowed up by life.5 Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who (C1)gave us the Spirit as a (F1)pledge.

6 Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that (C1)while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord—7 for (C1)we walk by faith, not by (F1)sight—8 but we are of good courage and (C1)prefer rather to be absent from the body and (C2)to be at home with the Lord.9 Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be (C1)pleasing to Him.10 For we must all appear before (C1)the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive compensation for (F1)his deeds done through the body, in accordance with what he has done, whether good or bad.<
