Psalm 99

The King Is Holy

1 The Lord reigns! Let the peoples tremble.
He is enthroned above the cherubim.(a)
Let the earth quake.(b)
2 Yahweh is great in Zion;
He is exalted above all the peoples.(c)
3 Let them praise Your great
and awe-inspiring name.(d)
He is holy.(e)

4 The mighty King loves justice.
You have established fairness;
You have administered justice
and righteousness in Jacob.(f)
5 Exalt the Lord our God;
bow in worship at His footstool.(g)
He is holy.(h)

6 Moses and Aaron were among His priests;(i)
Samuel also was among those calling on His name.
They called to Yahweh and He answered them.(j)
7 He spoke to them in a pillar of cloud;(k)
they kept His decrees and the statutes He gave them.
8  Lord our God, You answered them.
You were a forgiving God to them,(l)
an avenger of their sinful actions.(m)

9 Exalt the Lord our God;
bow in worship at His holy mountain,
for the Lord our God is holy.(n)

His people, the sheep of His pasture.(d)

and His courts with praise.
Give thanks to Him and praise His name.(f)
5 For Yahweh is good, and His love is eternal;
His faithfulness endures through all generations.

Psalm 101

A Vow of Integrity

A Davidic psalm.

1 I will sing of faithful love and justice;
I will sing praise to You, Lord .(a)
2 I will pay attention to the way of integrity.
When will You come to me?
I will live with a heart of integrity in my house.(b)
3 I will not set anything worthless before my eyes.
I hate the practice of transgression;
it will not cling to me.(c)
4 A devious heart will be far from me;
I will not be involved with[a] evil.(d)

5 I will destroy anyone
who secretly slanders his neighbor;(e)
I cannot tolerate anyone
with haughty eyes or an arrogant heart.(f)
6 My eyes favor the faithful of the land
so that they may sit down with me.
The one who follows the way of integrity
may serve me.(g)
7 No one who acts deceitfully
will live in my palace;
no one who tells lies
will remain in my presence.[b](h)
8 Every morning I will destroy
all the wicked of the land,
eliminating all evildoers from the Lord 's city.(i)

Psalm 102

Affliction in Light of Eternity

A prayer of an afflicted person who is weak and pours out his lament before the Lord .(a)

1  Lord , hear my prayer;
let my cry for help come before You.(b)
2 Do not hide Your face from me in my day of trouble.
Listen closely to me;
answer me quickly when I call.(c)

3 For my days vanish like smoke,
and my bones burn like a furnace.(d)
4 My heart is afflicted, withered like grass;(e)
I even forget to eat my food.(f)
5 Because of the sound of my groaning,
my flesh sticks to my bones.(g)
6 I am like a desert owl,[a]
like an owl among the ruins.(h)
7 I stay awake;(i)
I am like a solitary bird on a roof.
8 My enemies taunt me all day long;
they ridicule and curse me.(j)
9 I eat ashes like bread
and mingle my drinks with tears(k)
10 because of Your indignation and wrath;
for You have picked me up and thrown me aside.(l)
11 My days are like a lengthening shadow,
and I wither away like grass.(m)

12 But You, Lord , are enthroned forever;(n)
Your fame endures to all generations.(o)
13 You will rise up and have compassion on Zion,
for it is time to show favor to her—
the appointed time has come.(p)
14 For Your servants take delight in its stones
and favor its dust.(q)

15 Then the nations will fear the name of Yahweh,
and all the kings of the earth Your glory,(r)
16 for the Lord will rebuild Zion;
He will appear in His glory.(s)
17 He will pay attention to the prayer of the destitute
and will not despise their prayer.(t)

18 This will be written for a later generation,
and a newly created people will praise the Lord :(u)
19 He looked down from His holy heights—
the Lord gazed out from heaven to earth(v)
20 to hear a prisoner's groaning,
to set free those condemned to die,[b](w)
21 so that they might declare
the name of Yahweh in Zion
and His praise in Jerusalem,(x)
22 when peoples and kingdoms are assembled
to serve the Lord .(y)

23 He has broken my[c] strength in midcourse;
He has shortened my days.(z)
24 I say: "My God, do not take me
in the middle of my life![d]
Your years continue through all generations.(aa)
25 Long ago You established the earth,
and the heavens are the work of Your hands.(ab)
26 They will perish, but You will endure;
all of them will wear out like clothing.
You will change them like a garment,
and they will pass away.(ac)
27 But You are the same,
and Your years will never end.(ad)
28 Your servants' children will dwell securely,
and their offspring will be established before You."(ae)

Acts 17:16-34

Chapter 17

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was troubled within him when he saw that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with those who worshiped God and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.(l) 18 Then also, some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, "What is this pseudo-intellectual[c] trying to say?"

Others replied, "He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities"—because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the Resurrection.[d](m)

19 They took him and brought him to the Areopagus,[e] and said, "May we learn about this new teaching you're speaking of?(n) 20 For what you say sounds strange to us, and we want to know what these ideas mean." 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners residing there spent their time on nothing else but telling or hearing something new.

The Areopagus Address

22 Then Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said: "Men of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect. 23 For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed:

TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.

Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it(o)—He is Lord of heaven and earth(p) and does not live in shrines made by hands.(q) 25 Neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything,(r) since He Himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.(s) 26 From one man[f] He has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.(t) 27 He did this so they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.(u) 28 For in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.'[g](v) 29 Being God's offspring then, we shouldn't think that the divine nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image fashioned by human art and imagination.(w)

30 "Therefore, having overlooked(x) the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because He has set a day when He is going to judge the world in righteousness by the Man He has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead."(y)

32 When they heard about resurrection of the dead, some began to ridicule him. But others said, "We'd like to hear from you again about this." 33 Then Paul left their presence. 34 However, some men joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
