2 Kings 5

Chapter 5

Naaman Is Healed

1 Now (C1)Naaman, commander of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man (F1)in the view of his master, and eminent, because by him the LORD had given victory to Aram. The man was also a valiant warrior, but afflicted with leprosy.2 Now the Arameans had gone out (C1)in bands and had taken captive a little girl from the land of Israel; and she (F1)waited on Naaman's wife.3 And she said to her mistress, "If only my master were (F1)with the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would cure him of his leprosy."4 And (F1)Naaman went in and told his master, saying, "The girl who is from the land of Israel spoke such and such."5 Then the king of Aram said, "Go (F1)now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel." So he departed and (C1)took with him ten (F2)talents of silver, six thousand (F3)shekels of gold, and ten (C2)changes of clothes.

6 And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, (F1)which said, "And now as this letter comes to you, behold, I have sent Naaman my servant to you, so that you may cure him of his leprosy."7 But when the king of Israel read the letter, (C1)he tore his clothes and said, "(C2)Am I God, to kill and to keep alive, that this man is sending word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? But (C3)consider now, and see how he is seeking (F1)a quarrel against me."

8 Now it happened, when Elisha (C1)the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, that he sent word to the king, saying, "Why did you tear your clothes? Just have him come to me, and he shall learn that there is a prophet in Israel."9 So Naaman came with his horses and his chariots, and stood at the doorway of Elisha's house.10 And Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "(C1)Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored to you and you will be clean."11 But Naaman was furious and went away, and he said, "Behold, I (F1)thought, 'He will certainly come out to me, and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the site and cure the (F2)leprosy.'12 "Are (F1)Abanah and Pharpar, the rivers of Damascus, not better than all the waters of Israel? Could I not wash in them and be clean?" So he turned and (C1)went away in a rage.13 (C1)Then his servants approached and spoke to him, (F1)saying, "(C2)My father, had the prophet told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more then, when he says to you, 'Wash, and be clean'?"14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, in accordance with the word of the man of God; and (C1)his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and (C2)he was clean.

Gehazi's Greed

15 Then he returned to the man of God (F1)with all his company, and came and stood before him. And he said, "Behold now, (C1)I know that there is no God in all the earth, except in Israel; so please (C2)accept a (F2)gift from your servant now."16 But he said, "(C1)As surely as the LORD lives, before whom I stand, (C2)I will accept nothing." And he urged him to accept it, but he refused.17 Then Naaman said, "If not, please let your servant be given two mules' load of (C1)earth; for your servant will no longer offer a burnt offering nor a sacrifice to other gods, but to the LORD.18 "Regarding this matter may the LORD forgive your servant: when my master goes into the house of Rimmon to worship there, and (C1)he leans on my hand and I bow down in the house of Rimmon, when I bow down in the house of Rimmon, may the LORD please forgive your servant in this matter."19 He said to him, "(C1)Go in peace." So he went some distance from him.

20 But (C1)Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, (F1)thought, "Behold, my master has spared this Naaman the Aramean, (F2)by not accepting from his hand what he brought. (C2)As the LORD lives, I will run after him and take something from him."21 So Gehazi pursued Naaman. When Naaman saw someone running after him, he came down from the chariot to meet him and said, "Is everything well?"22 And he said, "(C1)Everything is well. My master has sent me, saying, 'Behold, just now two young men of the sons of the prophets have come to me from (C2)the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and (C3)two changes of clothes.'"23 Naaman said, "(C1)Be sure to take two talents." And he urged him, and tied up two talents of silver in two bags with two changes of clothes, and gave them to two of his servants; and they carried them before him.24 When he came to the (F1)hill, he took them from their hand and (C1)deposited them in the house, and he sent the men away, and they departed.25 But he went in and stood before his master. And Elisha said to him, "Where have you been, Gehazi?" And he said, "(C1)Your servant went nowhere."

26 Then he said to him, "Did my heart not go with you, when the man turned from his chariot to meet you? (C1)Is it a time to accept money and to accept clothes, olive groves, vineyards, sheep, oxen, and male and female slaves?27 "Therefore, the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and to your (F1)descendants forever." So he went out from his presence (C1)afflicted with leprosy, as white as snow.

Obadiah 1

Chapter 1

Edom Will Be Humbled

1 The vision of Obadiah.

This is what the Lord (F1)GOD says concerning (C1)Edom—
(C2)We have heard a report from the LORD,
And a (C3)messenger has been sent among the nations saying,
"(C4)Arise, and let's go up against her for battle"—

2 "Behold, I will make you (C1)small among the nations;
You are greatly despised.

3 "The (C1)arrogance of your heart has deceived you,
The one who lives in the clefts of (F1)the (C2)rock,
On the height of his dwelling place,
Who says in his heart,
'(C3)Who will bring me down to earth?'

4 "Though you (C1)make your home high like the eagle,
Though you set your nest among the (C2)stars,
From there I will bring you down," declares the LORD.

5 "If (C1)thieves came to you,
If (F1)robbers by night—
Oh how you will be ruined!—
Would they not steal only (F2)until they had enough?
If grape-pickers came to you,
(C2)Would they not leave some gleanings?

6 "Oh how Esau will be (C1)searched,
And his hidden treasures searched out!

7 "All the (C1)people (F1)allied with you
Will send you to the border,
And the people at peace with you
Will deceive you and overpower you.
They who eat your (C2)bread
Will set an ambush for you.
(There is (C3)no understanding (F2)in him.)

8 "Will I not on that day," declares the LORD,
"(C1)Eliminate wise men from Edom,
And understanding from the mountain of Esau?

9 "Then your (C1)warriors will be filled with terror, (C2)Teman,
So that everyone will be (C3)eliminated from the mountain of Esau by murder.

10 "Because of (C1)violence to your brother Jacob,
Shame will cover you,
(C2)And you will be eliminated forever.

11 "On the day that you (C1)stood aloof,
On the day that strangers carried off his wealth,
And foreigners entered his gate
And (C2)cast lots for Jerusalem—
(C3)You too were as one of them.

12 "(C1)Do not (F1)gloat over your brother's day,
The day of his misfortune.
And (C2)do not rejoice over the sons of Judah
On the day of their destruction;
Yes, (C3)do not (F2)boast
On the day of their distress.

13 "Do not enter the gate of My people
On the (C1)day of their disaster.
You indeed, do not (F1)gloat over their catastrophe
On the day of their disaster.
And do not (C2)lay a hand on their wealth
On the day of their disaster.

14 "Do not (C1)stand at the crossroads
To eliminate their survivors;
And do not hand over their refugees
On the day of their distress.

The Day of the LORD and the Future

15 "For the (C1)day of the LORD is near for all the nations.
(C2)Just as you have done, it will be done to you.
Your (C3)dealings will return on your own head.

16 "For just as you (C1)drank on (C2)My holy mountain,
All the nations (C3)will drink continually.
They will drink (F1)to the last drop,
And become as if they had never existed.

17 "But on Mount (C1)Zion there will be those who escape,
And it will be holy.
And the house of Jacob will (F1)(C2)possess their (F2)property.

18 "Then the house of Jacob will be a (C1)fire,
And the house of Joseph a flame;
But the house of Esau will be like stubble.
And they will set (F1)them on fire and consume (F1)them,
So that there will be (C2)no survivor of the house of Esau,"
For the LORD has spoken.

19 Then those of the (F1)Negev will (F2)(C1)possess the mountain of Esau,
And those of the (F3)Shephelah the (C2)Philistine plain;
Also, (C3)they will (F2)possess the territory of Ephraim and the territory of Samaria,
And Benjamin the territory of Gilead.

20 And the exiles of this army of the sons of Israel,
Who are among the Canaanites as far as (C1)Zarephath,
And the exiles of Jerusalem who are in Sepharad,
Will (F1)possess the (C2)cities of the Negev.

21 (F1)The (C1)deliverers will ascend Mount Zion
To judge the mountain of Esau,
And the (C2)kingdom will be the LORD'S.

1 Corinthians 11:17-34

Chapter 11

17 Now in giving this next instruction (C1)I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better, but for the worse.18 For, in the first place, when you come together (F1)as a church, I hear that (F2)(C1)divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it.19 For there also (C1)have to be factions among you, (C2)so that those who are approved may become (F1)evident among you.20 Therefore when you come together it is not to eat the Lord's Supper,21 for when you eat, each one takes his own supper first; and one goes hungry while (C1)another gets drunk.22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the (C1)church of God and (C2)shame those who have nothing? What am I to say to you? Shall (C3)I praise you? In this I do not praise you.

The Lord's Supper

23 For (C1)I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that (C2)the Lord Jesus, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread;24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me."25 In the same way He also took (C1)the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the (C2)new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death (C1)until He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy way, shall be (C1)guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.28 But a person must (C1)examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.29 For the one who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not properly recognize the (F1)body.30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number (F1)(C1)are asleep.31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged.32 But when we are judged, we are (C1)disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with (C2)the world.

33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.34 If anyone is (C1)hungry, have him eat (C2)at home, so that you do not come together for judgment. As to the remaining matters, I will (C3)give instructions (C4)when I come.
