2 Kings 4

Chapter 4

The Widow's Oil

1 Now a woman of the wives of (C1)the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the LORD; and (C2)the creditor has come to take my two children to be his slaves."2 So Elisha said to her, "What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?" And she said, "Your servant has nothing in the house except (C1)a jar of oil."3 Then he said, "Go, (F1)borrow containers (F2)elsewhere for yourself, empty containers from all your neighbors—do not get too few.4 "Then you shall come in and shut the door behind you and your sons, and pour into all these containers; and you shall set aside what is full."5 So she left him and shut the door behind her and her sons; they began bringing the containers to her, and she poured the oil.6 When (C1)the containers were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another container." But he said to her, "There (F1)are no more containers." Then the oil stopped.7 So she came and told (C1)the man of God. And he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debt, and you and your sons can live on the rest."

The Shunammite Woman

8 Now a day came when Elisha went over to (C1)Shunem, where there was a (F1)prominent woman, and she urged him to eat (F2)food. And so it was, as often as he passed by, that he turned in there to eat (F2)food.9 And she said to her husband, "Behold now, I am aware that this is a holy (C1)man of God passing by us repeatedly.10 "Please, let's (C1)make a little walled upper room, and let's set up a bed for him there, and a table, a chair, and a lampstand; then it shall be, when he comes to us, that he can turn in there."

11 Now (F1)one day he came there, and turned in to the upper room and (F2)rested.12 Then he said to his servant (C1)Gehazi, "Call this Shunammite." And when he had called her, she stood before him.13 And he said to him, "Say now to her, 'Behold, you have taken trouble for us with all this (F1)care; what can I do for you? (F2)Would you like me to speak for you to the king or to the commander of the army?'" But she (F3)answered, "I live among my own people."14 So he said, "What then is to be done for her?" And Gehazi (F1)answered, "It is a fact that she has no son, and her husband is old."15 He then said, "Call her." When he had called her, she stood in the doorway.16 Then he said, "(C1)At this season (F1)next year, you are going to embrace a son." And she said, "No, my lord, you man of God, (C2)do not lie to your servant."

17 Now the woman conceived and gave birth to a son at that season (F1)the next year, as Elisha had told her.

The Shunammite's Son

18 When the child was grown, the day came that he went out to his father, to the reapers.19 And he said to his father, "My head, my head!" And his father said to his servant, "Carry him to his mother."20 When he had carried him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her (F1)lap until noon, and then he died.21 And she went up and (C1)laid him on the bed of (C2)the man of God, and shut the door behind him and left.22 Then she called to her husband and said, "Please send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so that I may run to the man of God and return."23 But he said, "Why are you going to him today? It is neither (C1)new moon nor Sabbath." So she just said, "It will be fine."24 Then she saddled the donkey and said to her servant, "Drive the donkey and go on; do not slow down (F1)the pace for me unless I tell you."

25 So she went on and came to the man of God at (C1)Mount Carmel. When the man of God saw her at a distance, he said to Gehazi his servant, "Behold, that person there is the Shunammite.26 "Please run now to meet her and say to her, 'Is it going well for you? Is it going well for your husband? Is it going well for the child?'" Then she (F1)answered, "It is going well."27 But she came to the man of God (C1)at the hill and took hold of his feet. And Gehazi came up to push her away, but the man of God said, "Leave her alone, for her soul is (F1)troubled within her; and the LORD has concealed it from me and has not informed me."28 Then she said, "Did I ask for a son from my lord? Did I not say, '(C1)Do not give me false hope'?"

29 Then he said to Gehazi, "(F1)(C1)Get ready and (C2)take my staff in your hand, and go; if you meet anyone, do not (F2)(C3)greet him, and if anyone (F3)greets you, do not reply to him. And (C4)lay my staff on the boy's face."30 The mother of the boy said, "(C1)As surely as the LORD lives and you yourself live, I will not leave you." So he got up and followed her.31 Then Gehazi went on ahead of them and laid the staff on the boy's face, but there was no sound or (F1)response. So he returned to meet him and informed him, saying, "The boy (C1)has not awakened."

32 When Elisha entered the house, behold the boy was dead, laid on his bed.33 So he entered and (C1)shut the door behind them both, and he prayed to the LORD.34 Then (C1)he got up on the bed and lay on the child, and put his mouth on his mouth, his eyes on his eyes, his hands on his hands, and he bent down on him; and the flesh of the child became warm.35 Then he returned and walked in the house back and forth once, and went up and (C1)bent down on him; and the boy sneezed seven times, then the boy opened his eyes.36 And he called Gehazi and said, "Call this Shunammite." So he called her. And when she came to him, he said, "Pick up your son."37 Then she came in and fell at his feet and bowed down to the ground, and (C1)she picked up her son and left.

The Poisonous Stew

38 When Elisha returned to (C1)Gilgal, there was (C2)a famine in the land. (F1)As (C3)the sons of the prophets (C4)were sitting in front of him, he said to his servant, "(C5)Put on the large pot and boil stew for the sons of the prophets."39 Then one went out into the field to gather mallow, and found a wild vine and gathered from it his lap full of wild gourds; and he came and sliced them into the pot of stew, because they did not know what they were.40 So they poured it out for the men to eat. But as they were eating the stew, they cried out and said, "You man of God, there is (C1)death in the pot!" And they were unable to eat.41 Then he said, "Bring flour." (C1)And he threw it into the pot, and said, "Pour it out for the people that they may eat." Then there was nothing harmful in the pot.

42 Now a man came from Baal-shalishah, and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley and fresh grain in his sack. And Elisha said, "(C1)Give them to the people that they may eat."43 But his attendant said, "How (C1)am I to serve this to a hundred men?" Nevertheless he said, "Give them to the people that they may eat, for this is what the LORD says: 'They shall eat and have some left over.'"44 So he served it to them, and they ate and (C1)had some left over, in accordance with the word of the LORD.

Amos 9

Chapter 9

God's Judgment Unavoidable

1 I saw the Lord standing beside the (C1)altar, and He said,

"Strike the pillar capitals so that the (C2)thresholds will shake,
And (C3)break them on the heads of them all!
Then I will (C4)put to death the rest of them with the sword;
They will (C5)not have a fugitive who will flee,
Nor a survivor who will escape.

2 "Though they dig into (C1)Sheol,
From there My hand will take them;
And though they (C2)ascend to heaven,
From there I will bring them down.

3 "And though they hide on the summit of Carmel,
I will (C1)track them down and take them from there;
And though they (C2)hide themselves from My sight on the bottom of the sea,
I will command the (C3)serpent from there, and it will bite them.

4 "And though they go into (C1)captivity before their enemies,
From there I will command the sword and it will kill them,
And I will (C2)set My eyes against them for harm and not for good."

5 The Lord (F1)GOD of armies,
The One who (C1)touches the land so that it quakes,
And (C2)all those who live in it mourn,
And all of it rises up like the Nile
And subsides like the Nile of Egypt;

6 The One who builds His (C1)upper chambers in the heavens
And has founded His vaulted dome over the earth,
He who (C2)calls for the waters of the sea
And (C3)pours them out on the face of the earth,
(C4)The LORD is His name.

7 "Are you not as the sons of (C1)Ethiopia to Me,
You sons of Israel?" declares the LORD.
"Have I not brought up Israel from the land of Egypt,
And the (C2)Philistines from Caphtor and the (C3)Arameans from (C4)Kir?

8 "Behold, the (C1)eyes of the Lord GOD are on the sinful kingdom,
And I will (C2)eliminate it from the face of the earth;
Nevertheless, I will (C3)not totally eliminate the house of Jacob,"
Declares the LORD.

9 "For behold, I am commanding,
And I will (C1)shake the house of Israel among all nations
As grain is shaken in a sieve,
But not a pebble will fall to the ground.

10 "All the (C1)sinners of My people will die by the sword,
Those who say, '(C2)The catastrophe will not overtake or confront us.'

The Restoration of Israel

11 "On that day I will (C1)raise up the fallen (F1)(C2)shelter of David,
And wall up its (C3)gaps;
I will also raise up its ruins
And rebuild it as in the (C4)days of old;

12 (C1)So that they may (F1)possess the remnant of (C2)Edom
And all the (F2)nations who are (C3)called by My name,"
Declares the LORD who does this.

13 "Behold, days are coming," declares the LORD,
"When the (C1)plowman will overtake the reaper,
And the one who treads grapes will overtake him who sows the seed;
When the (C2)mountains will drip grape juice,
And all the hills will come apart.

14 "I will also (C1)restore the fortunes of My people Israel,
And they will (C2)rebuild the desolated cities and live in them;
They will also (C3)plant vineyards and drink their wine,
And make gardens and eat their fruit.

15 "I will also plant them on their land,
And (C1)they will not be uprooted again from their land
Which I have given them,"
Says the LORD your God.

Chapter 11

Christian Order

1 (C1)Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.

2 Now (C1)I praise you because you (C2)remember me in everything and (C3)hold firmly to the traditions, just as I handed them down to you.3 But I want you to understand that Christ is the (C1)head of every man, and (F1)(C2)the man is the head of a woman, and God is the (C3)head of Christ.4 Every man who has something on his head while praying or (C1)prophesying disgraces his head.5 But every (C1)woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for it is one and the same as the woman (F1)whose head is (C2)shaved.6 For if a woman does not cover (F1)her head, have her also (F2)cut her hair off; however, if it is disgraceful for a woman to (F2)have her hair cut off or (F1)her head shaved, have her cover (F1)her head.7 For a man should not have his head covered, since he is the (C1)image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.8 For (C1)man (F1)does not originate from woman, but woman from man;9 for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but (C1)woman for the man's sake.10 Therefore the woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.11 However, in the Lord, neither is woman (F1)independent of man, nor is man (F1)independent of woman.12 For as the woman originated from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and (C1)all things originate (C2)from God.13 (C1)Judge (F1)for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?14 Does even nature itself not teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him,15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her as a covering.16 But if anyone is inclined to be contentious, (C1)we have no (F1)such practice, nor have (C2)the churches of God.<
