Chapter 19

Elijah's Journey to Horeb

1 Ahab told Jezebel(a) everything that Elijah had done(b) and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.(c) 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, "May the gods punish me and do so severely(d) if I don't make your life like the life of one of them by this time tomorrow!"

3 Then Elijah became afraid[a](e) and immediately ran for his life.(f) When he came to Beer-sheba(g) that belonged to Judah, he left his servant there,(h) 4 but he went on a day's journey into the wilderness. He sat down under a broom tree(i) and prayed that he might die. He said, "I have had enough! Lord , take my life,(j) for I'm no better than my fathers." 5 Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree.

Suddenly, an angel touched him.(k) The angel told him, "Get up and eat." 6 Then he looked, and there at his head was a loaf of bread baked over hot stones, and a jug of water.(l) So he ate and drank and lay down again. 7 Then the angel of the Lord (m) returned for a second time and touched him. He said, "Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you." 8 So he got up, ate, and drank. Then on the strength from that food, he walked 40 days and 40 nights(n) to Horeb, the mountain of God.(o) 9 He entered a cave(p) there and spent the night.

Elijah's Encounter with the Lord

Then the word of the Lord came to him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"(q)

10 He replied, "I have been very zealous(r) for the Lord God of Hosts, but the Israelites have abandoned Your covenant,(s) torn down Your altars,(t) and killed Your prophets(u) with the sword. I alone am left,(v) and they are looking for me to take my life."(w)

11 Then He said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the Lord 's presence."(x)

At that moment, the Lord passed by.(y) A great and mighty wind(z) was tearing at the mountains and was shattering cliffs before the Lord , but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake,(aa) but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake there was a fire,(ab) but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was a voice, a soft whisper.(ac) 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle(ad) and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

Suddenly, a voice came to him and said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

14 "I have been very zealous for the Lord God of Hosts," he replied, "but the Israelites have abandoned Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they're looking for me to take my life."(ae)

15 Then the Lord said to him, "Go and return by the way you came to the Wilderness of Damascus. When you arrive, you are to anoint Hazael(af) as king over Aram. 16 You are to anoint Jehu(ag) son of Nimshi as king over Israel and Elisha(ah) son of Shaphat from Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. 17 Then Jehu will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Hazael,(ai) and Elisha will put to death whoever escapes the sword of Jehu.(aj) 18 But I will leave 7,000 in Israel(ak)—every knee that has not bowed to Baal(al) and every mouth that has not kissed him."(am)

Elisha's Appointment as Elijah's Successor

19 Elijah left there and found Elisha(an) son of Shaphat as he was plowing. Twelve teams of oxen were in front of him, and he was with the twelfth team. Elijah walked by him and threw his mantle over him.(ao) 20 Elisha left the oxen, ran to follow Elijah, and said, "Please let me kiss my father and mother, and then I will follow you."(ap)

"Go on back," he replied, "for what have I done to you?"

21 So he turned back from following him, took the team of oxen, and slaughtered them. With the oxen's wooden yoke and plow,(aq) he cooked the meat and gave it to the people, and they ate. Then he left, followed Elijah, and served him.(ar)

Chapter 3

3 Can two walk together(d)
without agreeing to meet?[a]
4 Does a lion roar(e) in the forest
when it has no prey?
Does a young lion growl from its lair
unless it has captured something?
5 Does a bird land in a trap on the ground
if there is no bait for it?
Does a trap spring from the ground
when it has caught nothing?
6 If a ram's horn(f) is blown in a city,
aren't people afraid?(g)
If a disaster(h) occurs in a city,
hasn't the Lord done it?(i)
7 Indeed, the Lord God does nothing
without revealing His counsel
to His servants the prophets.(j)
8 A lion has roared;(k)
who will not fear?
The Lord God has spoken;(l)
who will not prophesy?(m)

9 Proclaim on the citadels in Ashdod(n)
and on the citadels in the land of Egypt:
Assemble on the mountains of Samaria(o)
and see the great turmoil in the city
and the acts of oppression within it.(p)
10 The people are incapable of doing right(q)
this is the Lord 's declaration—
those who store up violence and destruction(r)
in their citadels.

11 Therefore, the Lord God says:

An enemy(s) will surround the land;
he will destroy(t) your strongholds
and plunder your citadels.(u)

12 The Lord says:

As the shepherd snatches two legs
or a piece of an ear
from the lion's mouth,(v)
so the Israelites who live in Samaria
will be rescued
with only the corner of a bed(w)
or the[b] cushion[c] of a couch.[d](x)

13 Listen and testify(y) against the house of Jacob—
this is the declaration of the Lord God ,
the God of Hosts.
14 I will punish the altars of Bethel(z)
on the day I punish Israel for its crimes;
the horns of the altar(aa) will be cut off
and fall to the ground.(ab)
15 I will demolish the winter house(ac)
and the summer house;(ad)
the houses inlaid with ivory(ae) will be destroyed,
and the great houses(af) will come to an end.
This is the Lord 's declaration.

Chapter 4

Social and Spiritual Corruption

1 Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan(a)
who are on the hill of Samaria,
women who oppress the poor
and crush the needy,(b)
who say to their husbands,
"Bring us something to drink."(c)

2 The Lord God has sworn(d) by His holiness:(e)

Look, the days are coming[a]
when you will be taken away with hooks,(f)
every last one of you with fishhooks.(g)
3 You will go through breaches in the wall,(h)
each woman straight ahead,
and you will be driven along toward Harmon.
This is the Lord 's declaration.

Chapter 6

Lawsuits among Believers

1 If any of you has a legal dispute against another, do you dare go to court(a) before the unrighteous,[a] and not before the saints? 2 Or don't you know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest cases? 3 Don't you know that we will judge angels—not to mention ordinary matters? 4 So if you have cases pertaining to this life, do you select those[b] who have no standing(b) in the church to judge? 5 I say this to your shame!(c) Can it be that there is not one wise person among you who is able to arbitrate between his brothers?(d) 6 Instead, believer[c] goes to court against believer, and that before unbelievers!(e)

7 Therefore, to have legal disputes against one another is already a moral failure for you.(f) Why not rather put up with injustice?(g) Why not rather be cheated?(h) 8 Instead, you act unjustly and cheat—and you do this to believers! 9 Don't you know that the unrighteous(i) will not inherit God's kingdom?(j) Do not be deceived: No sexually immoral people, idolaters,(k) adulterers,(l) or anyone practicing homosexuality,[d](m) 10 no thieves,(n) greedy(o) people, drunkards, verbally abusive people,(p) or swindlers(q) will inherit God's kingdom. 11 And some of you used to be like this.(r) But you were washed, you were sanctified,(s) you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Glorifying God in Body and Spirit

12 "Everything is permissible(t) for me,"[e] but not everything is helpful. "Everything is permissible for me," but I will not be brought under the control of anything. 13 "Food(u) for the stomach and the stomach for food," but God will do away with both of them.[f] The body is not for sexual immorality(v) but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14 God raised up the Lord and will also raise us up by His power.(w) 15 Don't you know that your bodies are a part of Christ's body?(x) So should I take a part of Christ's body and make it part of a prostitute? Absolutely not! 16 Don't you know that anyone joined to a prostitute is one body with her? For Scripture says, The two will become one flesh. (y)[g] 17 But anyone joined(z) to the Lord is one spirit(aa) with Him.

18 Run(ab) from sexual immorality! "Every sin a person can commit is outside the body."[h] On the contrary, the person who is sexually immoral(ac) sins against his own body. 19 Don't you know that your body is a sanctuary(ad) of the Holy Spirit(ae) who is in you,(af) whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20 for you were bought(ag) at a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.[i]
