2 Kings 15,16
Judah's King Azariah
1 In the twenty-seventh year of Israel's King Jeroboam, Azariah[a](a) son of Amaziah became king of Judah.(b) 2 He was 16 years old when he became king and reigned 52 years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jecoliah, who was from Jerusalem. 3 Azariah did what was right in the Lord 's sight(c) just as his father Amaziah had done. 4 Yet the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.(d)
5 The Lord afflicted the king, and he had a serious skin disease until the day of his death.(e) He lived in a separate house,[b](f) while Jotham,(g) the king's son, was over the household governing the people of the land.(h)
6 The rest of the events of Azariah's reign, along with all his accomplishments, are written in the Historical Record of Judah's Kings.(i) 7 Azariah rested with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. His son Jotham became king in his place.(j)
Israel's King Zechariah
8 In the thirty-eighth year of Judah's King Azariah, Zechariah(k) son of Jeroboam became king over Israel in Samaria for six months. 9 He did what was evil in the Lord 's sight as his fathers had done.(l) He did not turn away from the sins Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.(m)
10 Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against Zechariah. He struck him down publicly,[c] killed him, and became king in his place.(n) 11 As for the rest of the events of Zechariah's reign, they are written in the Historical Record of Israel's Kings.(o) 12 The word of the Lord that He spoke to Jehu was, "Four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel,"(p) and it was so.
Israel's King Shallum
13 In the thirty-ninth year of Judah's King Uzziah, Shallum son of Jabesh became king; he reigned in Samaria(q) a full month. 14 Then Menahem son of Gadi came up from Tirzah(r) to Samaria and struck down Shallum son of Jabesh there. He killed him and became king in his place. 15 As for the rest of the events of Shallum's reign, along with the conspiracy that he formed, they are written in the Historical Record of Israel's Kings.
Israel's King Menahem
16 At that time, starting from Tirzah, Menahem attacked Tiphsah,(s) all who were in it, and its territory. Because they wouldn't surrender,(t) he attacked it and ripped open all the pregnant women.(u)
17 In the thirty-ninth year of Judah's King Azariah, Menahem son of Gadi became king over Israel and reigned 10 years in Samaria. 18 He did what was evil in the Lord 's sight. Throughout his reign, he did not turn away from the sins Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.(v)
19 Pul[d](w) king of Assyria invaded the land, so Menahem gave Pul 75,000 pounds[e] of silver so that Pul would support him to strengthen his grip on the kingdom.(x) 20 Then Menahem exacted 20 ounces[f] of silver from each of the wealthy men of Israel to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria withdrew and did not stay there in the land.(y)
21 The rest of the events of Menahem's reign, along with all his accomplishments, are written in the Historical Record of Israel's Kings. 22 Menahem rested with his fathers, and his son Pekahiah became king in his place.(z)
Israel's King Pekahiah
23 In the fiftieth year of Judah's King Azariah, Pekahiah son of Menahem became king over Israel in Samaria and reigned two years. 24 He did what was evil in the Lord 's sight and did not turn away from the sins Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.(aa)
25 Then his officer, Pekah(ab) son of Remaliah, conspired against him(ac) and struck him down in Samaria at the citadel of the king's palace(ad) —as well as Argob and Arieh.[g] There were 50 Gileadite men with Pekah. He killed Pekahiah and became king in his place.
26 As for the rest of the events of Pekahiah's reign, along with all his accomplishments, they are written in the Historical Record of Israel's Kings.
Israel's King Pekah
27 In the fifty-second year of Judah's King Azariah, Pekah son of Remaliah became king over Israel in Samaria and reigned 20 years. 28 He did what was evil in the Lord 's sight. He did not turn away from the sins Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit.
29 In the days of Pekah king of Israel, Tiglath-pileser(ae) king of Assyria came and captured Ijon,(af) Abel-beth-maacah, Janoah, Kedesh, Hazor, Gilead, and Galilee—all the land of Naphtali(ag)—and deported the people to Assyria.(ah)
30 Then Hoshea(ai) son of Elah organized a conspiracy against Pekah son of Remaliah. He attacked him, killed him,(aj) and became king in his place in the twentieth year of Jotham son of Uzziah.
31 As for the rest of the events of Pekah's reign, along with all his accomplishments, they are written in the Historical Record of Israel's Kings.
Judah's King Jotham
32 In the second year of Israel's King Pekah son of Remaliah, Jotham(ak) son of Uzziah became king of Judah. 33 He was 25 years old when he became king(al) and reigned 16 years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jerusha daughter of Zadok. 34 He did what was right in the Lord 's sight just as his father Uzziah had done.(am) 35 Yet the high places were not taken away; the people continued sacrificing and burning incense on the high places.
Jotham built the Upper Gate of the Lord 's temple.(an) 36 The rest(ao) of the events of Jotham's reign, along with all his accomplishments, they are written in the Historical Record of Judah's Kings.(ap) 37 In those days the Lord began sending Rezin king of Aram and Pekah son of Remaliah against Judah.(aq) 38 Jotham rested with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of his ancestor David.(ar) His son Ahaz became king in his place.
Judah's King Ahaz
1 In the seventeenth year of Pekah son of Remaliah,(a) Ahaz(b) son of Jotham became king of Judah. 2 Ahaz was 20 years old when he became king and reigned 16 years in Jerusalem. He did not do what was right in the sight of the Lord his God like his ancestor David(c) 3 but walked in the way of the kings of Israel.(d) He even made his son pass through the fire,[a] imitating the detestable practices of the nations the Lord had dispossessed before the Israelites.(e) 4 He sacrificed and burned incense(f) on the high places, on the hills, and under every green tree.(g)
5 Then(h) Aram's King Rezin and Israel's King Pekah son of Remaliah came to wage war against Jerusalem. They besieged Ahaz but were not able to conquer him.(i) 6 At that time Rezin king of Aram recovered Elath for Aram and expelled the Judahites from Elath.(j) Then the Arameans came to Elath, and they live there until today.(k)
7 So Ahaz sent messengers(l) to Tiglath-pileser(m) king of Assyria, saying, "I am your servant and your son. March up and save me from the power of the king of Aram and of the king of Israel, who are rising up against me." 8 Ahaz also took the silver and gold found in the Lord 's temple and in the treasuries of the king's palace and sent them to the king of Assyria as a gift.(n) 9 So the king of Assyria listened to him(o) and marched up to Damascus and captured it.(p) He deported its people to Kir(q) but put Rezin to death.
Ahaz's Idolatry
10 King Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser(r) king of Assyria. When he saw the altar that was in Damascus, King Ahaz sent a model of the altar and complete plans for its construction to Uriah the priest.(s) 11 Uriah built the altar according to all the instructions King Ahaz sent from Damascus. Therefore, by the time King Ahaz came back from Damascus, Uriah the priest had completed it. 12 When the king came back from Damascus, he saw the altar. Then he approached the altar(t) and ascended it. 13 He offered his burnt offering(u) and his grain offering, poured out his drink offering, and sprinkled the blood of his fellowship offerings(v) on the altar. 14 He took the bronze altar(w) that was before the Lord in front of the temple between his altar and the Lord 's temple, and put it on the north side of his altar.
15 Then King Ahaz commanded Uriah the priest, "Offer on the great altar the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, and the king's burnt offering and his grain offering. Also offer the burnt offering of all the people of the land, their grain offering, and their drink offerings. Sprinkle on the altar all the blood of the burnt offering and all the blood of sacrifice. The bronze altar will be for me to seek guidance."[b] 16 Uriah the priest did everything King Ahaz commanded.
17 Then King Ahaz cut off the frames of the water carts[c](x) and removed the bronze basin from each of them. He took the reservoir[d](y) from the bronze oxen that were under it and put it on a stone pavement. 18 To satisfy the king of Assyria, he removed from the Lord 's temple the Sabbath canopy they had built in the palace, and he closed the outer entrance for the king.
Ahaz's Death
19 The rest(z) of the events of Ahaz's reign, along with his accomplishments, are written in the Historical Record of Judah's Kings.(aa) 20 Ahaz rested with his fathers(ab) and was buried with his fathers in the city of David, and his son Hezekiah became king in his place.
Galatians 3
Chapter 3
Justification through Faith
1 You foolish(a) Galatians! Who has hypnotized you,[a] before whose eyes Jesus Christ was vividly portrayed[b] as crucified?(b) 2 I only want to learn this from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law or by hearing with faith?[c] 3 Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now going to be made complete by the flesh?[d] 4 Did you suffer(c) so much for nothing—if in fact it was for nothing? 5 So then, does God supply you with the Spirit and work miracles(d) among you by the works of the law or by hearing with faith?[e]
6 Just as Abraham believed God, (e) and it was credited to him for righteousness, (f)[f] 7 then understand that those who have faith are Abraham's sons.(g) 8 Now the Scripture saw in advance that God would justify the Gentiles by faith and told the good news ahead of time to Abraham,(h) saying, All the nations will be blessed through you. (i)[g] 9 So those who have faith are blessed with Abraham,(j) who had faith.[h]
Law and Promise
10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse,(k) because it is written:(l) Everyone who does not continue doing everything written in the book of the law is cursed. (m)[i] 11 Now it is clear that no one is justified before God by the law, because the righteous will live (n) by faith. (o)[j] 12 But the law is not based on faith; instead, the one who does these things will live by them. (p)[k] 13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us,(q) because it is written: Everyone who is hung on a tree is cursed. (r)[l] 14 The purpose was that the blessing of Abraham would come to the Gentiles by Christ Jesus, so that we could receive the promised Spirit through faith.(s)
15 Brothers, I'm using a human illustration.[m] No one sets aside or makes additions to even a human covenant[n] that has been ratified. 16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say "and to seeds," as though referring to many, but referring to one, and to your seed, (t)[o] who is Christ. 17 And I say this: The law, which came 430 years later,(u) does not revoke a covenant that was previously ratified by God[p] and cancel the promise. 18 For if the inheritance is from the law, it is no longer from the promise; but God granted it to Abraham through the promise.
The Purpose of the Law
19 Why then was the law given?(v) It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise was made would come. The law was put into effect through angels(w) by means of a mediator.(x) 20 Now a mediator is not for just one person, but God is one.(y) 21 Is the law therefore contrary to God's promises? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that was able to give life, then righteousness would certainly be by the law. 22 But the Scripture has imprisoned everything under sin's power,[q](z) so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ(aa) might be given to those who believe.(ab) 23 Before this faith(ac) came, we were confined under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith was revealed.(ad) 24 The law, then, was our guardian[r] until Christ,(ae) so that we could be justified by faith. 25 But since that faith(af) has come, we are no longer under a guardian, 26 for you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
Sons and Heirs
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ like a garment.(ag) 28 There is no Jew or Greek, slave or free,(ah) male or female;(ai) for you are all one(aj) in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, heirs(ak) according to the promise.(al)
