1 Kings 12:1-31

Chapter 12

King Rehoboam Acts Foolishly

1 (C1)Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, because all Israel had come to (C2)Shechem to make him king.2 Now (C1)when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard about this, (F1)he was living in Egypt (for he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from the presence of King Solomon).3 Then they sent word and summoned him, and Jeroboam and all the assembly of Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,4 "(C1)Your father made our yoke hard; but now, lighten the hard labor imposed by your father and his heavy yoke which he put on us, and we will serve you."5 Then he said to them, "(C1)Depart (F1)for three days, then return to me." So the people departed.

6 And King Rehoboam (C1)consulted with the elders who had (F1)served his father Solomon while he was still alive, saying, "How do you advise me to answer this people?"7 Then they spoke to him, saying, "(C1)If you will be a servant to this people today, and will serve them and (F1)grant them their request, and speak pleasant words to them, then they will be your servants always."8 But he ignored the advice of the elders which they had given him, and consulted with the young men who had grown up with him (F1)and served him.9 He said to them, "What advice do you give, so that we may answer this people who have spoken to me, saying, 'Lighten the yoke which your father put on us'?"10 And the young men who had grown up with him spoke to him, saying, "This is what you should say to this people who spoke to you, saying: 'Your father made our yoke heavy, now you make it lighter for us!' You should speak this way to them: 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist!11 'Now then, my father loaded you with a heavy yoke; yet I will add to your yoke. My father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with (F1)scorpions!'"

12 Then Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, just as the king had (F1)directed, saying, "(C1)Return to me on the third day."13 And the king answered the people harshly, for he ignored the advice of the elders which they had (F1)given him,14 and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, "(C1)My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with (F1)scorpions!"15 So the king did not listen to the people; (C1)because it was (F1)a turn of events from the LORD, (C2)in order to establish His word which the LORD spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

The Kingdom Divided; Jeroboam Rules Israel

16 When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people replied to the king, saying,

"What share do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse;
(C1)To your tents, Israel!
Now look after your own house, David!"
So Israel went away to their tents.

17 But (C1)as for the sons of Israel who lived in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.18 Then King Rehoboam sent (C1)Adoram, who was in charge of the forced labor, and all Israel stoned him (F1)to death. And King Rehoboam hurried to mount his chariot to flee to Jerusalem.19 (C1)So Israel has broken with the house of David to this day.

20 And it came about, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned, that they sent word and called him to the assembly, and made him king over all Israel. (C1)None except the tribe of Judah alone followed the house of David.

21 (C1)Now when Rehoboam had come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, 180,000 chosen warriors, to fight against the house of Israel to restore the kingdom to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.22 But the word of God came to (C1)Shemaiah the man of God, saying,23 "Tell Rehoboam the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and the (C1)rest of the people, saying,24 'This is what the LORD says: "You shall not go up nor fight against your relatives the sons of Israel; return, every man to his house, (C1)for this thing has come from Me."'" So they listened to the word of the LORD, and returned to go their way in accordance with the word of the LORD.

Jeroboam's Idolatry

25 Then (C1)Jeroboam built Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and lived (F1)there. And he went out from there and built (C2)Penuel.26 And Jeroboam said in his heart, "Now the kingdom will return to the house of David.27 "(C1)If this people go up to (F1)offer sacrifices in the house of the LORD in Jerusalem, then the heart of this people will return to their lord, to Rehoboam king of Judah; and they will kill me and return to Rehoboam king of Judah."28 So the king (F1)consulted, and he (C1)made two golden (C2)calves; and he said to (F2)the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem; (C3)behold your gods, Israel, that brought you up from the land of Egypt."29 And he set up (C1)one in (C2)Bethel, and the other he put in (C3)Dan.30 Now (C1)this thing became a sin, for the people went to worship before the one as far as Dan.31 And (C1)he made houses on high places, and (F1)(C2)appointed priests from (F2)all the people who were not of the sons of Levi.<

Hosea 14

Chapter 14

Israel's Future Blessing

1 (F1)(C1)Return, Israel, to the LORD your God,
For you have stumbled (F2)because of your (C2)wrongdoing.

2 Take words with you and return to the LORD.
Say to Him, "(C1)Take away all guilt
And (F1)receive us graciously,
So that we may (C2)present (F2)the fruit of our lips.

3 "Assyria will not save us,
We will (C1)not ride on horses;
Nor will we say again, '(C2)Our god'
To the (C3)work of our hands;
For in (C4)You the (F1)orphan finds mercy."

4 I will (C1)heal their apostasy,
I will (C2)love them freely,
Because My anger has (C3)turned away from them.

5 I will be like the (C1)dew to Israel;
He will blossom like the (C2)lily,
And he will (F1)take root like the cedars of (C3)Lebanon.

6 His shoots will (F1)sprout,
His (F2)majesty will be like the (C1)olive tree,
And his fragrance like the cedars of (C2)Lebanon.

7 Those who (C1)live in his shadow
Will (F1)again raise (C2)grain,
And they will blossom like the vine.
His fame will be like the wine of Lebanon.

8 Ephraim, what more have I to do with (C1)idols?
It is I who answer and look after (F1)you.
I am like a luxuriant (C2)juniper;
From (C3)Me (F2)comes your fruit.

9 (C1)Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
Whoever is discerning, let him know them.
For the (C2)ways of the LORD are right,
And the (C3)righteous will walk in them,
But (C4)wrongdoers will stumble in them.

Mark 16

Chapter 16

The Resurrection

1 (C1)When the Sabbath was over, (C2)Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of (F1)James, and Salome (C3)bought spices so that they might come and anoint Him.2 And very early on the first day of the week, they (*)came to the tomb when the sun had risen.3 They were saying to one another, "Who will roll away (C1)the stone from the entrance of the tomb for us?"4 And looking up, they (*)noticed that the stone had been rolled away; (F1)for it was extremely large.5 And (C1)entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right, wearing a white robe; and they (C2)were amazed.6 But he (*)said to them, "(C1)Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the (C2)Nazarene, who has been crucified. (C3)He has risen; He is not here; see, here is the place where they laid Him.7 "But go, tell His disciples and Peter, '(C1)He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.'"8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had gripped them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

9 [[(F1)Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to (C1)Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons.10 (C1)She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and weeping.11 And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, (C1)they refused to believe it.

12 Now after that, (C1)He appeared in a different form (C2)to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the country.13 And they went away and reported it to the rest, but they (C1)did not believe them, either.

The Disciples Commissioned

14 Later (C1)He appeared (C2)to the eleven disciples themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reprimanded them for their (C3)unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen from the dead.15 And He said to them, "(C1)Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.16 "(C1)The one who has believed and has been baptized will be saved; but the one who has not believed will be condemned.17 "These signs will accompany those who have believed: (C1)in My name they will cast out demons, they will (C2)speak with new tongues;18 they will (C1)pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not harm them; they will (C2)lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."

19 So then, when the Lord Jesus had (C1)spoken to them, He (C2)was received up into heaven and (C3)sat down at the right hand of God.

20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.]] [[(F1)And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself also sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable proclamation of eternal salvation.]]
